This is the type of event that I'm glad I'm around to tape. Some dude was sitting in the Minneapolis Town Hall back in 1948 recording Lead Belly right? I wish I could've met that guy cause it's a great recording for '48. Back to present day...timeless music with a well balanced mixture of traditional folks songs and original compositions. Having seen the full band at the last handful of shows this was a rare duo performance (which is how Roma di Luna began) with Channy & Alexei playing to a crowd of 20-30 people in the basement of Hosmer Library. Hosmer is a community library located in lovely South Minneapolis, check it out. Being that it was a very intimate setting I didn't want to bust in with the standard large mic stand. Instead, I brought a mini-stand that I bought for on stage taping of instrumental performances. The mics were centered about 2' in front of them and about 4' off the ground. I'm extremely happy with the recording but it was understandably quiet to start with. I resisted the urge to crank the gain pots on the UA-5 because I knew the noise floor would be evident at some point. I wanted to bring up the levels without using compression so with the peak being at -7.4dB I first added 7dB gain. It still wasn't as full as I wanted it to be so I went back to the raw recording for another attempt. This time using Bury Me, the "loudest" song played. I Normalized just under 0dB to avoid clipping or using compression. At this point I was happy with the levels but it still remains a fairly quiet recording so on playback you'll want to turn it up a bit more than you might for say an amplified "rock" show. Included are scans of the flyer & set list.

Many thanks of course to Roma di Luna for allowing the local scene to tape them in many different settings but thanks also go to Hosmer Library for hosting such events for the community to enjoy. There are only 3 more performances left in the series this season but I have my eye on the 8/23 Spaghetti Western String Co. date. I think that could be a really great recording.

"The Hosmer Music Series is a world music performance series hosted at both the Hosmer Community Library,(347 E. 36th St.) and the Minneapolis Central Library, (Pohlad Hall, 300 Nicollet Mall, Minneapolis). It was good hangin' with my friends Dean & Karen. These sexy MBHOs are Dean's after all.

On the Roma di Luna front there are only three more shows on the books for this year so be sure to check them out if you're in the area. They will be taking a well deserved break to welcome their first born into the world, baby Casselle is due on election day. Barack Moon Casselle has a nice ring to it if you ask me.
