The Weekend Is Here Hooray

Wednesday night at Nick & Eddie was a lot of fun. Big surprise. I really enjoyed both the Batmen and Marijuana Deathsquad sets. Dave Matters sat in with MDS this week. Lots of friends checked it out for the first time. What up Joe and Chastity. About 3.5 hours of sleep was had.

It was sort of fitting that I caught the 21 to go record Heiruspecs at Central last night. I got there at 6 to set up and doors opened at 7. At 7:30 Mayor Chris Coleman gave them a top notch introduction. I don't think people realized that they were in for a two plus hour Heiruspecs set but they threw down like I've never seen before. The set featured a wealth of first class special guests. What probably impressed me the most was the fact that Peter, Sean, Josh and dVRG never left the stage. What's the word? Oh yeah, unfuckwithablestamina. Wow. Respect to Ryan for mixing sound and to McNally Smith for providing the sound system. After things wrapped up at Central Joe and I headed over to Sauce to catch Puppy Dogs & Ice Cream, Kristoff Krane and Sector 7G. Having been to Sauce before and knowing that it's no place for a mic stand Ross was cool enough to let me patch out of the soundboard. The crow's nest the FOH is in there is pretty wild. I don't dislike Sauce as much as I used to. The staff were all pretty stand up folks. Another 3.5 hours of sleep was had.

Here's to not having to go to shows immediately after work. Have you seen any live photography from the Twin Cities music scene? Then you've probably seen some of Adam Bubolz's handy work. Adam turns 30 today and has booked a pretty chainless show at the Turf featuring Tight Phantomz (Chicago), STNNNG (Minneapolis/St. Paul), Tanks (Iowa City) and a special surprise set from an unnamed band. If you're in the neighborhood perhaps you'd like to stop down and thank him for all of the great stills he's provided us with over the years. Late show? Possible nap after work? Thank you god of naps.

8 "Shows" in 5 days?

It all started last night with the 3rd week of the Wednesday night Marijuana Deathsquads at Nick & Eddie. Now, I'd really like to make it to The Hexagon tonight to record Sorry OK but I'm on the fence about closing the Hex three nights in a row. I realize some people may do this all the time but not so much while recording the bands and making sure expensive equipment gets home safely. So if you're not charging batteries for the weekend you should check out Sorry OK + Shakedown City + The Boys N' The Barrels + Porch Knights at the Hexagon TONIGHT.

What is known for certain is that on Friday I plan to run the main rig at the Hex for the Bouncer Fighter CD Release w/ Children of Euler + TBA while also running a smaller rig at Memory Lanes for Sleeping in the Aviary + Me and My Arrow. It'll be a champagne jam Seward style. On the books for Saturday is catching Andrew Broder's opening set for Retribution Gospel Choir at The Triple Rock and then breaking down as quickly as possible to catch a cab to the Hex. Sorry RGC but nothing will stop me from recording The Chickadee Mountain Martyrs CD Release. If this go well I hope to arrive in time to capture Knife World. Getting set up in time for Dark Dark Dark shouldn't be a problem...really looking forward to all three sets so we'll see what happens.

On the Sabbath I'm pretty jazzed at the opportunity to record at The Cake Shop again. This month's show features an intimate sit down with The Pines including the ever popular 4pm and 7pm sets format. As with last's months show with Jeremy Messersmith I'm in for both!

Audiophile: The live concert-taping subculture.

Steven Hoffer who writes for The McGill Tribune recently stopped over to Taperssection to gain insight on this here world-wide taping subculture. Thanks for the intricate research and the great article, Steve.

The entire article can be read here.

Audiophile

The live concert-taping subculture

Steven Hoffer | Published: 2/16/10

"No more than two dozen patrons have filed into the upstairs concert hall of Montreal's La Sala Rosa for an evening of live jazz. Among the dedicated few sits Mark Crawford, a beer in his right hand and a focussed yet unassuming countenance on his face. Positioned front and centre, Mark is preparing a medium-sized microphone stand that is wired through a pre-amplifier, digital to analog converter, and power supply into his digital recorder. Mark will leave the show with a personal recording of the performance.

Mark is a member of the small-yet-vigilant Montreal "taper" scene. He has been trading live concert recordings since the late eighties and has recorded performances at Metropolis, Le National, and Le Divan Orange, among other venues in Montreal and across North America. He claims that the Salle Wilfred-Pelletier theatre at Place des Arts has the best acoustics in the city.

"I have a need to hear bands evolve, a need to hear the bands I like explore," Crawford says."

A taper profile

"The tapers comprise a subculture of music fandom. A mix of obsessive-compulsive music documenters, former party animals, tape collectors, and hobbyists, it's difficult to pin down the taper subculture to a single personality type. The lowest common denominator is simply a true love for music.

Most tapers arrive at the show early enough to be the first admitted, gear in hand and mind focussed on constructing their rig. While the band is finishing its sound check, the tapers are busy searching for the room's "sweet spot," assembling and stabilizing their microphone stands, clamping and connecting cables, and making sure their recorders are fully charged for show time.

A taper might invest over $10,000 in equipment. A set of high-end Schoeps or Neumann brand microphones cost about $5,000 alone. Factor in preamplifiers running as much as $6,000, digital recorders for up to $2,000, digital to analogue converters, power supplies, cases, cables, and clamps, and most tapers have gear valued around the price of a well-running used car. Some, like California-based taper Ian Stone, have gone as far as running their own private server.

"I was going to Rochester Institute of Technology in New York and I had just gotten a new computer. I had a T1 Internet connection in my dorm room, so I took advantage of it," says Stone"

A document of everyday life

"Speak with any taper who has been at it for more than 20 years and odds are they will tell you that it all goes back to one band - The Grateful Dead. Although the Dead allowed its nomadic fan base to record as early as the mid-sixties, on October 27, 1984, the band officially created a special area of the audience known as "the tapers' section." Generally positioned adjacent to or behind the soundboard, from this point on tapers could freely transport and set up their rigs without hassle from venue security. As a result, taping emerged from the shadows and into the public eye.

"[The Deadheads] were really the hardcore music fans," says Ackerman. "The Grateful Dead were really one of the only bands back then that were constantly improvising so that every show was different."

These recordings provided free publicity for the band, as well as a method for fans to document the show. It was a way not only to collect, compare, and share the music, but also to revisit the concert experience from the night before.

So it should come as no surprise that a taper will opt for an audience tape over a doctored soundboard recording without question.

"There is something about a good audience tape that makes the perspective a lot better. You get a less sterile, more venue-oriented sound," says Crawford. "You can get it in your mind exactly where the mics are in the room. You actually know how the sound is bouncing off the seats; you get the whole feeling of how the sound was in the venue - more of the way that it is supposed to be portrayed. The whole recording idea is to capture the show exactly as your human ear would capture it - it's getting exactly what the band is trying to throw out into the particular room."

The tapes provide more than just the music. The listener can gauge the audience's energy and other sounds that are normally undetected by a soundboard recording.

"It's cool getting the ambiance in the room - hearing the tinkle of the bar glasses or hearing people slam the door, or playing pool in the background. You get more of a feeling or picture of what the night was other than just the sound," says Crawford."

La Dispute Return To Minneapolis...

Last summer I became highly addicted to La Dispute's latest LP "Somewhere at the Bottom of the River Between Vega and Altair" which can be purchased through No Sleep Records. I was able to catch them supporting The Fall of Troy and Thursday this past September at The Varsity Theater. That recording can be downloaded here. I'm happy to see that they are stopping at The Triple Rock this time. La Dispute shares the bill with Alexisonfire, Trash Talk and Therefore I Am.

This Saturday February 20th there is a very important show at The Hexagon (2600 27th Avenue South) in Seward, Minneapolis. The Chickadee Mountain Martyrs release their debut LP through Anti-Civ Records. This is also Luc's annual birthday show so if you appreciate him as a person perhaps you might consider buying him a drink and or buying his record? An earthquake in Illinois could not shake this evening's support loose. Be sure to arrive early to avoid missing Dark Dark Dark and Knife World taking the stage. In short, The Chickadee Mountain Martyrs are my favorite local band of 2010 but I reserve the right to make that official until it is known how many units they can move. Thanks for reading and I sincerely hope to see you at The Hexagon this Saturday.

"You're seriously leaving Solid Gold in the Mainroom to go record a basement show?" - confused Mainroom attendant. Yes, sometimes in life decisions have to be made. I'm glad I made it back to the neighborhood in time to catch this show. I'm not sure how common it is for people to take 414s to a South Minneapolis basement show but I'm a pretty big proponent of my friend Phil's band inBOIL so leaving the bright lights of Downtown to come support him wasn't a hard decision to make. This was inBOIL's CD Release Show, the bill also featured Bitch N' Brown, Teenage Moods and Sorry OK. I must say that I enjoyed all 4 sets and if you see any of these bands playing around town don't hesitate to check them out. Two quick notes. 1) This is not the full set but rather select tracks. 2) This is a basement tape and while I think it sounds rather nice and find it to be a great listen this was recorded in a basement.

British Library to digitize 1000's of donated tapes.

This was originally posted by sunjan on taperssection 12/31/09.

"The collection of UK taper Michael Gerzon, who died in 1996, has been donated to the British Library. Among others, he managed to tape many indie acts early in their carreer (pre- Radiohead, Swervedriver, Supergrass etc). He did DAT pulls as early as 1988, and made very elaborate notes." A picture of Gerzon's technique is available here. Gerzon's paper “Stereo Shuffling: New Approach – Old Technique” is available here thanks to audiosignal.co.uk. Actually, several of his papers are available here.

The entire article is available here thanks to the CEC - Concordia Archival Project.

Here's a small excerpt:
"Michael Gerzon (1945–1996) was variously described in his obituaries as “one of the audio industry’s greatest thinkers and writers”, (2) “one of its most prolific polymaths”, (3) and even — put most simply and without embarrassment by Richard Elen — as a “genius”. (4) The respected author of over 120 published papers, many on aspects of audio theory, sound recording/reproduction and technology, he was also a postgraduate student of axiomatic quantum theory, expert in psychoacoustics and auditory perception, leading contributor to the development of ambisonics and co-inventor of the Soundfield microphone (the first capable of directional three-dimensional recording), along with a raft of designs relating to digital audio, signal processing, systems theory, noise shaping and many others. He died in 1996, aged 50, from complications arising from acute asthma, a condition he battled against for most of his life.

The Michael Gerzon Archive is the work of one of the most prolific and dedicated recordists in the field of live engineering, consisting of thousands of hours of recordings made over a period of thirty years. As a subject for archival, the transfer of so much audio on a traditional, “one-to-one” basis would require a commitment on an equal and ultimately impractical level. Thankfully, current technology now allows archival-quality audio transfer to take place on a scale previously impossible. Migration of the collection from obsolete carriers to secure, digital files was therefore one of the first — and certainly the largest — to be undertaken by the British Library Sound Archive as part of a programme of mass-digitisation, with audio from up to four discrete sound sources ingested and archived simultaneously."

Graham O' Brien to Release Solo Project

This morning I was pleasantly surprised to open an email containing a track off of Graham O' Brien's upcoming solo release. Wow. I'm currently breaking my "no music at work" rule. Over the course of the past few years I've enjoyed recording Graham's various musical incarnations. He's a monster. Like many of the best musicians the Twin Cities has to offer he's constantly in at least a half dozen bands at the same time and that's all while working on his own solo material. Graham mentioned that "the main idea behind this project is to explore some of the textures created by samples and live drumming and instrumentation." It's a commonly shared opinion around town that Graham leads the new generation of TC drummers. "Recycle Maker" features Kristoff Krane on vocals rekindling a musical partnership that has lasted the better part of a decade.

Last weekend I was given the opportunity to record one of my favorite local bands Where Astronauts Go To Hide in Chicago where they also happen to be considered local. I've got to say it was nice to get back to Chicago. A trip made much better spent with new friends and even newer friends. Thanks to Sam for keeping Harrigan's open for us Friday night and to Rachel for keeping us off the street. The Bottom Lounge is a nice venue conveniently by the train like much of everything else. From my experience the staff were great and the FOH was one of the most attentive FOHs I've encountered in a long while. Lacona, Glasko and Deadlands supported. Back to Harrigan's Saturday night. What a doozy. Someone once told me what happens in Chicago stays in Chicago. Thanks to Laura & Co. for keeping us inside four walls. Highlights were but not limited to Pequod's and oddly enough the ride back with Josh listening to classic jams from Grandaddy, Cursive, WHY? and many other great bands over the course of the 7 hour drive down darkened Midwestern highways.

Having already shared the stage with The Good Life, Land of Talk, Lissie, Old Canes, Murder By Death, An Horse, Akron/Family and The Show is the Rainbow to name a few 2010 is looking to be a great year for WAGTH. Keep an eye on their calendar. Later this month they will be playing shows in Cambridge, MA, Brooklyn, Philadelphia, Columbus and Chicago. Something else to be excited for is the launching of the official Where Astronauts Go To Hide website.

(Right Click & Save Link As on PC. Click-Operations on Mac.)

This was the second night of the Modern Radio 10th Anniversary celebration. The bill also included Vampire Hands, Skoal Kodiak and a very special reunion of The Plastic Constellations! FT (The Shadow Government), Daughters of the Sun, Chambermaids, Double Bird, and Sheridan kicked off the festivities the night before at The Turf Club. There were cupcakes from The Cake Eater Bakery. I know it's kind of a teaser but I wouldn't want to spoil any future DVD releases. What's up to Schedule Two. Thanks to the bands and The Cedar for being cool with recording.

This should have been out a month ago but I wasn't ready to sit down with the recording. Tim played a big part in the keeping of my sanity this past year so when I say it was a honor to record this set I mean it. At the risk of breaking out my trusty bag of hyperbole it was an exorcism of sorts. Old Canes and Where Astronauts Go To Hide supported. If you missed any of the 3 sets you missed out.

I also recorded The Good Life at The Triple Rock in 2005 but at the time I was recording onto HiMD and Sony was brilliant enough to have this proprietary software SonicStage which in it's infancy was infamous for trapping recordings onto discs. For whatever reason you were only allowed to transfer a recording one time and if something went wrong for no reason than bam...no more Triple Rock '05 recording. Let's not live in the past, eh? Please enjoy a rare recording from The Good Life's December '09 four city midwest tour. The Good Life have releases available through Saddle Creek Records.

NYCTaper gets the recognition he deserves...

I've known Dan Lynch since 2005, perhaps even before NYCTaper had even launched. Dan is a great guy and I'm happy to see that people are taking notice of his hard work.

On NYCTaper and the Proud, Obsessive Lineage of Local Audio Hoarders
By Jesse Jarnow Tuesday, Jan 26 2010

"Dan Lynch has his spots. At Bowery Ballroom, it's a 10-foot swath by the balcony rail. At 92Y Tribeca, it's a column near the stage. At the Music Hall of Williamsburg to tape the Fiery Furnaces in December, he arrives before the first band, goes to the tiny indentation by the soundboard, and makes his nook. The eight-foot mic stand goes up first, holding pairs of Neumann KM-150s and DPA 4021s angled at the speakers. The cables snake into his bag, where, behind a beer-proof plastic window, a digital four-track records in 24-bit sound. He periodically checks his headphones while the Furnaces play, absorbing the rush of the Music Hall's speakers, politely shooing away a beer-drinker tottering too close for comfort.

"It's almost like the music is a bit of escape from the heavy stuff I have to deal with during the day," acknowledges Lynch, 46, a Notre Dame–trained civil rights and criminal defense lawyer whose cases have included homicide, police brutality, and false arrest, and who once served as counsel to the office of legendary attorney Ron Kuby. Known as NYCTaper, Lynch has uploaded almost 400 shows to NYCTaper.com since his site's inception in 2007. Later, in a corner of his Stuy-Town apartment, he sits below his sleeping children's Christmas decorations and transfers the Furnaces gig onto his well-worn PC. He tucks the setlist into an accumulating drift between DVD-R spindles. After a weekend mixdown, he posts it. Just over 300 people download it." ...the rest of the article can be read on The villagevoice.com.

New Microphones!

Update for all my microphone geeks out there. I made the decision to upgrade to full sized condenser mics in mid '06. I decided to go with the Studio Project C4s. The first show I recorded with the C4s was Murder by Death, Langhorne Slim and Metal Hearts at the Triple Rock in May 2006. Many people agree that the C4s are some of the best mics to be had at the $300 price point. They always treated me right and I don't see any reason to get rid of them.

My Longfellow homeboy Dean has also been kind enough to loan me his MBHO (GmbH Mikrofonbau Haun) condensers on multiple occasions. The MBHO 603 As are some of the sexiest German mics out there and Dean certainly has a couple tons of good karma due. Recently I got the bug to upgrade mics. I started looking into Milab, a Swedish company. It happened that another great friend and local archivist David had a pair of the Milab VM-44 Link model. David gave me an unsolicited offer to run the VM-44s for a couple of weeks to see if I liked the sound.

I do indeed like the Milab sound! However, I got word of a pair of AKG 414B-xls's for sale out of IL. Around this same time my friends Where Astronauts Go To Hide invited me Chicago with them to record their show at The Bottom Lounge. I was able to meet the seller at the show and run the 414s for the first time. Either tonight or tomorrow you'll get to hear this recording.
