The Plan.

Post-Blaisdell barbecue this evening will be spent on the West Bank recording the Bloodnstuff CD Release with STNNNG and Marijuana Deathsquads at The Triple Rock. After party at The Bargain Basement Bar in South? Eterna in Northeast?

After a good brunch somewhere I'm heading over to the Midway to record the early Heiruspecs Scholarship Fundraiser Show at The Turf Club. There's also a 21+ 9pm show as well for anyone interested. Should probably skip brunch and have an early dinner at On's Thai Kitchen.

After the saying goodbye to The Turf it's Downtown to Hell's Kitchen for Father You See Queen, Canyons of Static (West Bend, WI) and Paragraphs. Extremely excited for this bill. My first time seeing Mark's new project FYSQ, Canyons is one of my favorite bands and haven't been through town since the October 2011 Empty's Tapes Presents show at HK and I've always loved Paragraphs. First show in a long time! Cheese curds, giant pretzels with jalapeno cheese sauce and chicken & biscuit sandwiches with country gravy et cetera.

All of this will be done without a car. See you in the streets! Three shows, two days, two cities and one river.

Thunderbolt Pagoda @ The Turf Club

Thunderbolt Pagoda
The Turf Club
St. Paul, MN
Friday March 2nd 2012

Thunderbolt Pagoda has posted a couple of songs from a recent Turf Club recording on their Tumblr. I've had a great appreciation for this band going back to the year two thousand and nine so I consider it a high compliment that they would take the time to make these available.

Their interpretation of "Black Easter," originally by Sol Invictus.
"The Navigator," the first song written together with Gerard when he joined on bass.

(excerpts from the full set)

This is a 2 track "field recording" as is how things are usually done around here. Any "post-recording" adjustments are accredited to them. Studio releases (2008's s/t debut and 2010's Second Ascension) can be obtained through Mutant Music. Obligatory link to The Facebook.

Erik Wivinus - Guitar, Vocals, Sitar
Ralph Karsten - Mellotron, Analogue Synthesizers
Matt Entsminger - Drums
Gerard-Jean Boissy - Bass

(Thunderbolt Pagoda and Marijuana Deathsquads supported Total Fucking Blood on the eve of their LP Release show.)

No Tapes.

The Captain got a hold of me yesterday to ask if I would record the Marijuana Deathsquads set at the Big Freedia show last night. As much I hate letting him down I really didn't feel like messing with the 21 to the Turf. Wasn't in the mood for that at all but now I'm disappointed that the MDS set wasn't recorded.

Instead I went to Cause because it's close to the house and Falcon Arrow & Cadette never let me down. I was also very glad to catch Hey, Remember Nostalgia for the first time. Didn't feel like schlepping gear 8 blocks in 20° weather so that show also went unrecorded.

/pointless update.

The Appleseed Cast Vs. Marijuana Deathsquads

I was pretty torn about tonight. I've recorded The Appleseed Cast the past two years in a row (2009 and 2010) at The Triple Rock but I also spent a good 6 months recording the Marijuana Deathsquads residency at Nick & Eddie last year. With things coming full circle at Nick & Eddie tonight for the Deathsquads LP release I was happy to hear that P.J. will be covering The Triple Rock!

Dear Los Angeles, Hopefully I See You Again Before You Go Under.

Most people have probably already caught Tigger's report on what he witnessed in Los Angeles last month, Marijuana Deathsquads raid the West Coast. I was able to make it out for the final night of the Spaceland residency on Friday February 25th. I'm going to have to stop the story there because my Mom reads this. Neil once said, "...and I'd do it again."

Marijuana Deathsquads - Love Power After Bar Set (01-14-11)

Facebook | Myspace

The first official dust up at Lover Power featured a 6 hour two floor freak out. Olson and Ackerman promised a party, they delivered a marathon blowout. Special thanks to Garrison for setting this up. Folks were helping pick up at the end of the night so I hope all is well and look forward to future events inside this building. Plans for a mix tape are in the far off future but in the meantime I wanted to post the MDS After Bar set. Sorry it took so long but somehow a noon trip to the gym sounded like the ticket? Enjoy and see you at a bloody mary bar somewhere south of Franklin in about 30.

"Gastro Non Grata has been busy sowing the seeds of knowledge bombs of the best local chefs, purveyors of the finest libation and lots of dirty rock and roll into your skulls for over four years. This fall we reaped such bumper crop of good times we have to make it a two day soiree with all proceeds to benefit our friends at the beautiful Ritz Theater in NE MPLS. That’s right, two days of the finest this city has to offer in chef driven food, locally owned alcoholic beverages and uber-talented musicians.

The November 12 show features chef Philip Becht (Modern Café) and Erik Anderson (Seachange) pairing foods with Crispin Cider while DJ Pat Dwyer (Grumpy’s NE) spins the hits and makes your fingers snap. Bands in order of appearance Magic Castles, Unknown Prophets, Tyler Burkum and Me and My Arrow.

November 13 brings the flavor with Phil Becht again, flanked by and Steven Brown (chef/owner of soon to be Tilia) on vittle patrol with our friends from Fulton Beer and Grape Beginnings. Cakeeater Bakery will also have something for your sweet tooth on hand. In between sets DJ Solid Gold plays the music that keeps hope alive. Music by Black Audience, Phantom Tails, Rude Girl, Marijuana Death Squads and Pink Mink.

We’re also proud to announce we’re bringing the meat raffle back for both nights with our friends from Clancey’s Meat and Fish and a bevy of local NE establishments throwing their wares into the prize vaults, so bring extra cash for raffle tickets.

Gastro Non Grata is a labor of love co-sponsored by Pabst Blue Ribbon, Modern Café, Cakeeater Bakery, Fulton Beer, Crispin Cider, Grape Beginnings, Metro Magazine and Heavy Table.

Last Night Was A Good One...

Thanks to the Deathsquads for getting me on the list to record their last minute show at The Entry. I had a few minutes to play it back before work this morning and it was sounding like something I would be proud to share. I'll upload that around 6pm barring any last minute chicken wing happy hour outings. Unfortunately I did not stay for Gram Rabbit but I encourage you to check them out. Jesika von Rabbit was in the Twin Cities band The Minx.

I wanted to go to The Kitty Cat Klub to see The Chickadee Mountain Martyrs, The Funeral And The Twilight and The Great Confinement but I needed a serious break from Dinkytown. Since it was Colin's last night in town for a while I went down to the Hexagon. When I got there the Heggies Pizza had just started flowing like wine. If you don't live in Minnesota you probably don't know the joy of a good Heggies. Typically they can only be found in certain bars, convenience stores and smaller grocery stores. First up was a "6 Pack" (Sausage, Pepperoni, Canadian Bacon, Smoked Bacon, Mozzarella & Cheddar). I've had the 6 Pack before and while it is delicious it's simply too much meat on one pizza. I wanted to keep it simple and order a cheese or sausage Heggies but Harris insisted that I order the new Chicken Alfredo. I usually don't care for Alfredo based pizzas but I've got to say it was damn good. Thank you Heggies. You are doing good things up in Milaca!

The first 120 seconds are missing because I was in the alley engaged in a discussion with Craig and Freddy. Boss usually pages me in these situations. Most people probably wouldn't have noticed had I not said anything but the anal taper discloses all details.
