Should have been "Picked to Click" but didn't have the necessary popular sway of radio play and marketing to make it happen? It's a damn shame really. Actually, it looks like they were 5 votes out. Why am I talking about Picked to Click?

Cadette is ex-members of Baby Guts and The Deaf. Some members also currently play in Kitten Forever, Les Deux Magots and Finger Pressure.

Nice Purse - "Put It On Me" @ The Nomad

Nice Purse - "Put It On Me" Live At The Nomad (03/03/11)

I was standing there minding my own business at The Nomad last Thursday and all of the sudden this song smacked me in the mouth. Like some twisted time machine I was taken back to revisit the sweetest of teenage breakups. Oh yes, the salad days.

The last time I saw Nice Purse they were going on in the 4th slot of the Sleeping in the Aviary tour kickoff show in early January. By that point I was doing alright and not really paying attention. I need to pay a little more attention. This was the first night of the Teenage Moods March miniseries.

Teenage Moods released their new CD Mood Ring last week. It's also available digitally alongside RPG Picnic Time (cassette released in September) on their Bandcamp page. Catch Teenage Moods every Thursday night at The Nomad during their March Miniseries. Expect class act local and touring support for each show as well as No Cover and 9pm doors. Recordings from Cadette, Nice Purse and Vacation Dad possibly coming soon.

For the record, I asked Gordon if he wanted me to post 2 or 3 tracks versus the whole set and he said "Nah, put it all up." So please thank the man with a hug, handshake or cd purchase when you see him.

Sorry OK December Miniseries @ The Nomad

December's miniseries at The Nomad will feature Sorry OK along with a ton of other great local bands. The proof is really in the flier. I would like to record all three of these but realistically I'm aiming for at least two. The TBA on 12/16 will be Brian Whitson & the Night Wolves.

On a semi-unrelated note this makes me nostalgic for the December 2007 Miniseries. Fond memories of trudging through the West Bank snow to record four Mel Gibson and the Pants shows that also included a group of insane supporting bands.

This was the Cassette Release Show for "RPG Picnic Time" as well as the debut of Teenage Moods as a five piece. Sleeping in the Aviary, Chelsea Boys and Buffalo Moon made it a good Cause to support. The cassettes are limited and almost sold out at the show so if you'd like to procure one contact the band soon. Even without soundboard vocals to mix in I'm very surprised at how well this turned out and hope you enjoy a listen. Hypers up front for the win. Much respect Ross.

Someone Said This Week Will Be a Good Week

I'm sure, actually, I know that there's other amazing shows to check out this week but here's what I'm catching...

Tuesday the 16th:

The Appleseed Cast stop into The Triple Rock to play "Low Level Owl Volumes 1 & 2" in their entirety. Who in their right mind would miss this tour? Chicago's Dreamend are supporting on this tour. This Triple Rock show happens to be at 5pm.

Wednesday the 17th:

I'm looking forward to another double banger of a Wednesday. Definitely checking out Mike Gunther's happy hour set at the City Club located inside Grumpy's Downtown. This goes down from 6pm to 7:30ish. I believe this is happening 3/17, 3/24 and 3/31 if you're interested in checking it out. I'm excited to return to Nick & Eddie for Marijuana Deathsquads later that night. Thanks again to Perks for covering N&E last week.

Thursday the 18th:

The 331 Club grows on me more and more after each visit. They've got a great bill on Thursday that includes; Poor Posture, The Chickadee Mountain Martyrs, Teenage Moods and The Drug Budget.

Friday the 19th:

The Soviettes reunite at The Turf Club! Gateway District, Awesome Snakes (Last Show!) and That's Incredible support. If you're across the River Friday night I would highly recommend checking out the Anti-Civ Records Showcase at Memory Lanes which includes sets from; Bouncer Fighter, Zombie Season, Sorry OK, Ogre Smash Death Boom and Hangun Man.

Saturday the 20th:

No Bird Sing, The Alarmists and Paragraphs at The Triple Rock!

"You're seriously leaving Solid Gold in the Mainroom to go record a basement show?" - confused Mainroom attendant. Yes, sometimes in life decisions have to be made. I'm glad I made it back to the neighborhood in time to catch this show. I'm not sure how common it is for people to take 414s to a South Minneapolis basement show but I'm a pretty big proponent of my friend Phil's band inBOIL so leaving the bright lights of Downtown to come support him wasn't a hard decision to make. This was inBOIL's CD Release Show, the bill also featured Bitch N' Brown, Teenage Moods and Sorry OK. I must say that I enjoyed all 4 sets and if you see any of these bands playing around town don't hesitate to check them out. Two quick notes. 1) This is not the full set but rather select tracks. 2) This is a basement tape and while I think it sounds rather nice and find it to be a great listen this was recorded in a basement.

What we have here are three Minneapolis bands worth your time in checking out. Look they even have easy to remember myspace URLs...first to last that's how it went down. Tom was on it. Besides a few stray pins you wouldn't know that these tracks were recorded in a bowling alley. Thanks to Memory Lanes for letting me stay warm inside your walls.

Fuck Buttons or Sleeping in the Aviary?

Having not had much luck recording Fuck Buttons the last time they played The Triple Rock I was leaning towards a Mute Era miniseries / Vic Chesnutt combo. Still, I thought I might stop in to see what the official word was this time around. Their FOH/TM was leery at first, asking me a few more than reasonable questions in a thick English accent. I assured him this was not for monetary gain and a TR manager was kind enough to vouch for me. Clearance was given but this changed things a bit. Two bands. Ten and Eleven. Normally I would be very aroused by this format but it only proved to create conflict. Now I needed to figure out how to record as much as possible at The Nomad and still make it back down in time to get the Fuck Buttons set. This predicament was soon semi-remedied when a friend in the bar offered the use of a mic stand he had in his trunk. Yes, we're sometimes six thick, you just don't notice us. With a stand taped down at The Triple Rock I headed down the street to set up at The Nomad.

Five band bills are always interesting but fortunate for everyone at 501 Cedar all 5 bands brought their salt. I caught Mute Era with Gospel Gossip at The Turf Club last June. There are more than one great rock duos in town but Mute Era are doing something completely different and you should definitely check it out. They didn't get a miniseries by being a couple of schmucks! Listen to the tracks. I'm not about to lie to anyone, Sleeping in the Aviary drew me to the show. First time seeing Teenage Moods but I was very surprised and impressed by what the three of them do. I predict good things. Also my first time catching Leisure Birds. Everyone knows how good these guys are so I'll just leave it at that. I was a supporter of Thunder in the Valley so this was another set that I had been looking forward to. Nick had requested a copy of the December '07 TITV tape (The Nomad) the night before at the STNNNG show. The drop was made. I remember listening to that recording for a long time. Dante & the Lobster were in attendance to release their new album and headline the evening. Go. Pick. Up. This. CD.

I started to think about the lonely stand at The Triple Rock and I started to realize that the Fuck Buttons set was not going to get recorded. Neither would Vic's across the street. The thousands of people reading this may be wondering why? I'm not going to blame it on a 5 band bill nor the late start. Irrelevant I say! I'm going with (C.) The music coming through the PA. After each band finished their agreeable 30 minute set I had a persistent itch to stay for the next one. This continued for the duration of the evening. Ill live tapes forthcoming.

Everybody's Different - Live @ The Bedlam
I'm Old - Live @ The Bedlam
Write On - Live @ The Bedlam

Have you ever felt like you've been missing out? I asked a dear friend how I hadn't known about these guys when they've apparently have been around the block. He could only pour salt in the wound by coming back with "where were you four years ago when they were playing shows with Baby Guts?" Unfortunately I was probably at different shows. Well now I know what the deal is. Sleeping in the Aviary and A Paper Cup Band supported Anders Ponders for his CD Release. Great sets all around and more recordings to follow. Sleeping in the Aviary's releases, including their latest album "Expensive Vomit In A Cheap Hotel" can all be purchased through Science of Sound out of Madison, WI. You can catch Sleeping in the Aviary at The Nomad November 19th as part of Mute Era's miniseries w/ Dante & the Lobster (CD Release) and Teenage Moods. Note, the whole set was furious and pleasing but I'm only releasing these tracks for now.
