inBOIL on Myspace.

Here are a few numbers from the last Sunday's inBOIL set at The Psychic School of Dream Actualization. Phil doesn't really care about things like "the internet" or "moving units" but if you would like a copy of the debut inBOIL album Mouthful of Guns try the myspace page or get in touch with me and I'll give him a ring for you. It is highly recommended. This recording is good and raw but sometimes music doesn't need a PA to be legit.

It was an honor to have so many top shelf bands play the "birthday show." A huge thanks to The Chickadee Mountain Martyrs, Sleeping in the Aviary, Bird Sounds and Strong Bones. Of course I wanted this to go down at one of my favorite haunts so a giant cyber bear hug to Kermit for helping to make that possible. Thank you to anyone who stopped down to check it out as well.

I have no problem in saying that The Chickadee Mountain Martyrs' Comeuppance is one of the best records to come out of Minneapolis in the past few years. If you're at all curious about checking it out it's available on The Martyrs' bandcamp page. It should also be noted that this wasn't just any ole Martyrs set. Yes. Nikki Grossman, OG member of the Martyrs took the stage on violin and vocals. If I'm not mistaken this has not happened since.

One fine Saturday morning Elliott rang asking if I could help with a photo shoot. Being that SITA HQ is only a couple of blocks away I said sure thing. I was hoping that there were going to be masks involved and I was right! I'm the ghoul who looks all dead in the eyes.

Sleeping in the Aviary have a new album entitled Great Vacation! coming out November 30th on CD and Vinyl through Science of Sound (Madison, WI). Download the first song here.

It's a Sunday night and lots of people will have to work in the morning. We'll try to keep it a 12:30 night unless of course people would like to stick around a bit longer and make sure the bartender has a good night as well. How's that sound? Special food and beverage items being sorted out!

For anyone actually keeping score I came into the world on 09/29/80 so please feel free to send free pizza to my house this Wednesday. I think I'll take the day off so rest assured the drivers will be tipped handsomely.

This was the Cassette Release Show for "RPG Picnic Time" as well as the debut of Teenage Moods as a five piece. Sleeping in the Aviary, Chelsea Boys and Buffalo Moon made it a good Cause to support. The cassettes are limited and almost sold out at the show so if you'd like to procure one contact the band soon. Even without soundboard vocals to mix in I'm very surprised at how well this turned out and hope you enjoy a listen. Hypers up front for the win. Much respect Ross.

Sleeping in the Aviary - "The Very Next Day I Died" Live At The Cedar

Last Friday was not like other Fridays. I was hired to record a funeral service. No need to get into it on the blogosphere other than saying that she was an amazing woman and a fixture in her South Minneapolis neighborhood for 30 years. After the service I stopped into Roadrunner Records to collect thee thoughts a bit. I've always loved that store but it didn't seem like the time to shop for music so began the hustle to the West Bank via Downtown. There was a less somber occasion that needed to be archived.

Hawks & Oxen were holding their CD Release Show at The Cedar, one of the best venues in town. Don't sleep on Hawks & Oxen's "Coarse Course" release. Sleeping in the Aviary and Sundowners supported. On the way over the sky opened up with heavy rains which is always a hoot when you have gear on foot. Made it to The Cedar in time for soundcheck but after getting set up I was craving some eats from The Triple Rock. The chili with veggie sausage was sounding tasty and tasty it was. At this point the rain had come back with a vengeance. It was torrential and not letting up. My shirt had just barely dried off and I wasn't about to let it get soaked again. A West Bank ghost told me to stuff the shirt in my pants and sprint like a mother. The Cedar Avenue cabbies all stared as if I had lost my mind but I had no time to stop and ask if anyone had seen it.

Back at The Cedar folks who weren't scared off my the rain enjoyed an evening of fine musics. Details on posting a track or two from the Hawks & Oxen set are still being worked out but since Sleeping in the Aviary are one of my favorite bands around town I wanted to share a track from their set. It may seem as though it's related to the first paragraph of this post but it's not. I just really like the song. Their official releases are available through Science of Sound. A new album is on the way but in the meantime may I recommend a little "Expensive Vomit In A Cheap Hotel?"

Pretty Quiet Around Here Lately...

So there seems to be a constant stream of 50 or so people who check in even if I'm not posting much. I just wanted to say thank you for the interest. Now that the nice weather is here I've been trying not to sit locked away in my apartment. This of course leads to a reduction in the frequency of tapes being processed. I've recorded some shows in the passed couple weeks that haven't made it online yet so I need to go over some stuff. Perhaps I'll obtain permission to post a Dave King Trucking Company set from the Clown Lounge a couple of Mondays ago? Looking like a busy weekend though...

- I've been hired to record my first funeral this week.

- Friday night is sounding like a nice night to spend at The Cedar. Hawks & Oxen CD Release w/ Sleeping in the Aviary and The Sundowners. 7pm doors / 8pm music with a $5 admission in advance and $10.

- Saturday night WHY? play the Mainroom with Deerhoof and Southeast Engine. This is sure to be good medicine. I need some. 6pm doors $13/$15.

- Sunday night our friends Gastro Non Grata take over First Avenue & The 7th Street Entry with the Gastro Non Grata: Vagabond Vacation. Mainroom sets will feature; School of Rock, Birthday Suits, Unknown Prophets, Private Dancer and Pink Mink. The Entry will feature sets by; Moonstone, Fuck Knights, Rifflord and Guystorm.

Northeast Minneapolis and afghani pizza

Will Marijuana Deathsquads At Nick and Eddie (V) get posted before I get to sleep? It's possible. Will it be posted next? Yes.

Friday night at The Hexagon was a grand ole gathering of friends. Sleeping in the Aviary, Military Special, Icarus Himself and Alpha Centauri kept things lively. Saturday night it was a privilege to record Lookbook, City on the Make, The Pines, Peter Wolf Crier, Jeremy Messersmith and Romantica in the Mainroom as part of Vita.MN's SXSW send off. After the Mainroom Ray and I rolled over to The 331 in his cadi to catch Gospel Gossip, Dante & The Lobster and Magic Castles.

Did I mention that the afghani pizza at the Crescent Moon Bakery is amazing?

So apparently Phil is only in bands that leave you looking for your jaw on the floor. I kind of like this about him. There on 10 tracks on inBOIL's debut album and I haven't found myself skipping any of them. I was given a choice of titles and had to go with "No Makeup Never! Not Now, Not While I'm Dead" without any second thought. Sure, I'm probably substituting definitions but in a dark corner of the Nomad it all rang true. In a way I'm glad I obtained a copy on the upswing. Hearing "How Many Times?" "Starin' at the Moon," "This Aching Heart" and "A Tomato in the Sun" a year ago would have probably left me in a sobbing mess on the floor and that's always embarrassing, right? This is no doubt a compliment to Phil's song writing. While it's not likely "Machines" will leave you in a ball on the floor it's still one of the best songs I've heard in years. Word is inBOIL will have a proper release show for the album the first weekend in February so keep an eye out for that. Every Thursday during the month of January you can stop down to The Nomad to catch great local bands and support the Sisters Camelot fundraiser.

What we have here are three Minneapolis bands worth your time in checking out. Look they even have easy to remember myspace URLs...first to last that's how it went down. Tom was on it. Besides a few stray pins you wouldn't know that these tracks were recorded in a bowling alley. Thanks to Memory Lanes for letting me stay warm inside your walls.

Fuck Buttons or Sleeping in the Aviary?

Having not had much luck recording Fuck Buttons the last time they played The Triple Rock I was leaning towards a Mute Era miniseries / Vic Chesnutt combo. Still, I thought I might stop in to see what the official word was this time around. Their FOH/TM was leery at first, asking me a few more than reasonable questions in a thick English accent. I assured him this was not for monetary gain and a TR manager was kind enough to vouch for me. Clearance was given but this changed things a bit. Two bands. Ten and Eleven. Normally I would be very aroused by this format but it only proved to create conflict. Now I needed to figure out how to record as much as possible at The Nomad and still make it back down in time to get the Fuck Buttons set. This predicament was soon semi-remedied when a friend in the bar offered the use of a mic stand he had in his trunk. Yes, we're sometimes six thick, you just don't notice us. With a stand taped down at The Triple Rock I headed down the street to set up at The Nomad.

Five band bills are always interesting but fortunate for everyone at 501 Cedar all 5 bands brought their salt. I caught Mute Era with Gospel Gossip at The Turf Club last June. There are more than one great rock duos in town but Mute Era are doing something completely different and you should definitely check it out. They didn't get a miniseries by being a couple of schmucks! Listen to the tracks. I'm not about to lie to anyone, Sleeping in the Aviary drew me to the show. First time seeing Teenage Moods but I was very surprised and impressed by what the three of them do. I predict good things. Also my first time catching Leisure Birds. Everyone knows how good these guys are so I'll just leave it at that. I was a supporter of Thunder in the Valley so this was another set that I had been looking forward to. Nick had requested a copy of the December '07 TITV tape (The Nomad) the night before at the STNNNG show. The drop was made. I remember listening to that recording for a long time. Dante & the Lobster were in attendance to release their new album and headline the evening. Go. Pick. Up. This. CD.

I started to think about the lonely stand at The Triple Rock and I started to realize that the Fuck Buttons set was not going to get recorded. Neither would Vic's across the street. The thousands of people reading this may be wondering why? I'm not going to blame it on a 5 band bill nor the late start. Irrelevant I say! I'm going with (C.) The music coming through the PA. After each band finished their agreeable 30 minute set I had a persistent itch to stay for the next one. This continued for the duration of the evening. Ill live tapes forthcoming.

Tonight's West Bank Dilemma

Tonight Fuck Buttons return to The Triple Rock. A couple of us were denied taping last time by the merch person per management. Upon speaking with one of the Fuck Buttons afterwards they don't personal mind but can't cross management. This is common with national & international touring bands and completely understandable. No fuss was made. Vic Chesnutt is down the street at The Cedar. Vic's current band includes Guy Picciotto (Fugazi) & members of Thee Silver Mt. Zion/Godspeed You! Black Emperor & Witchies. Across the street Mute Era will be finishing up their miniseries at The Nomad. This is also Dante & the Lobster's CD Release show. Sleeping in the Aviary, Leisure Birds and Teenage Moods support.

Should probably stop into The Triple Rock for dinner to ask Fuck Buttons about recording. When/if I get the red light it's a short walk down the street. To be honest they should be playing Friday night anyways. Then I could just hit The Nomad and problem solved. If I get ambitious I might ask Vic if I can get soundboard at The Cedar while I run mics at The Nomad. That's the show I'd rather be at. Me skip national acts to catch a bill of local acts? Never.

There were many shows to go to this evening. After much thought and consideration I believe I attended the right one. This was my first exposure to Anders music but it shall not be my last. If you would like a copy of "Nodes of Overtones" please contact Anders before he runs out. Sonic hotcakes never sounded so good. Note that in a world of insincerity, besides being a multifaceted musician Anders is also a genuine person. Sleeping in the Aviary and A Paper Cup Band supported this fine evening of music. Thanks to The Bedlam for existing.

Anders, this was to be posted yesterday following the Sleeping in the Aviary tracks but as you can see below I took a little tumble.

Everybody's Different - Live @ The Bedlam
I'm Old - Live @ The Bedlam
Write On - Live @ The Bedlam

Have you ever felt like you've been missing out? I asked a dear friend how I hadn't known about these guys when they've apparently have been around the block. He could only pour salt in the wound by coming back with "where were you four years ago when they were playing shows with Baby Guts?" Unfortunately I was probably at different shows. Well now I know what the deal is. Sleeping in the Aviary and A Paper Cup Band supported Anders Ponders for his CD Release. Great sets all around and more recordings to follow. Sleeping in the Aviary's releases, including their latest album "Expensive Vomit In A Cheap Hotel" can all be purchased through Science of Sound out of Madison, WI. You can catch Sleeping in the Aviary at The Nomad November 19th as part of Mute Era's miniseries w/ Dante & the Lobster (CD Release) and Teenage Moods. Note, the whole set was furious and pleasing but I'm only releasing these tracks for now.
