Douchelords And The Affliction Spring Collection: Saturday Night Downtown

All snide hyperbole aside last night was well worth the effort. With a half dozen choice shows to attend last night I devised a plan to keep it Downtown for maximum documentation. Guante & Big Cats! and Kristoff Krane were playing the Fine Line as part of Botzy's annual The Best Love Free is show. I was glad I got down to the Warehouse District in time to catch the Wesley Opus & Botzy set. Be sure to check them out if you haven't. No slight intended to Soulcrate Music or Culture Cry Wolf but after Guante & Big Cats! left the stage in smoldering ashes it was time to head to Hell's Kitchen aka the Downtown safe house.

Got downstairs just in time to hear the last couple Ill Chemistry numbers. I've been a supporter of Desdemona and Carnage for years but unfortunately it's impossible to capture all of the 1s and 0s in this city we love. I knew I had seen Wizards Are Real once before at The Turf Club but the details of that evening were foggy at best. I was really impressed with their set and would definitely enjoy seeing them again. They delivered a much needed jazz cut wormhole into the end of the night. And then now? The Book of Right On, the band that drew me in. A band whom if you've poked around this site for the past six to thirty six months you know comes highly endorsed. Recordings to follow.

On Saturday October 31st, 2009 Puppy Dogs and Ice Cream, a group that featured Austin Dufault on production with Micheal Larsen, Kristoff Krane and Mike Schank on vocals took the stage at The Turf Club for their live debut. They only played about six shows and I was able to record three of them. Some people may have heard the Audience version of this track but I gave Mikey the master recordings and he mixed in the Soundboard. This is the first time a high-res mp3 of his mix has been made available. "Ashes to Afterbirth" was also the first song Austin and him worked on together when they started Puppy Dogs and Ice Cream.

Graham O'Brien Releases Debut Album

Graham O'Brien's debut solo album Live Drums is now available for purchase or download through NOECHO Records. It is also available via iTunes. You may be familiar with Graham's work in No Bird Sing, Abzorbr or any number of other bands he's played in or done production for but Live Drums is some next level business. The album features appearances by Kristoff Krane, Adam Svec, Alicia Wiley as well as Eric Blair and Robert Mulrennan of No Bird Sing.

Graham's debut solo effort, Live Drums lies somewhere near the boundaries of the Instrumental Hip Hop genre. As the title suggests, each song on the album is shaped by Graham’s drum set performances - which are inventive and creatively recorded. The dark, contrasting layers of synthetic and sampled sounds make the record an engaging listen. Compositionally, this album is influenced by DJ Shadow, Portishead and The Gaslamp Killer, among others.

Last Saturday I partnered up with my friend Colin, founder of Pure Optics in an effort to help document Kristoff Krane's CD release at The Entry. Chris always picks out choice support which included Guante & Big Cats, Big Trouble and Ecid. Brett Spurr was behind the additional camera and Tony Rohr mastered the audio capture. Thanks to Ron for doing what he does. Here's to Dragons.

The Weekend Is Here Hooray

Wednesday night at Nick & Eddie was a lot of fun. Big surprise. I really enjoyed both the Batmen and Marijuana Deathsquad sets. Dave Matters sat in with MDS this week. Lots of friends checked it out for the first time. What up Joe and Chastity. About 3.5 hours of sleep was had.

It was sort of fitting that I caught the 21 to go record Heiruspecs at Central last night. I got there at 6 to set up and doors opened at 7. At 7:30 Mayor Chris Coleman gave them a top notch introduction. I don't think people realized that they were in for a two plus hour Heiruspecs set but they threw down like I've never seen before. The set featured a wealth of first class special guests. What probably impressed me the most was the fact that Peter, Sean, Josh and dVRG never left the stage. What's the word? Oh yeah, unfuckwithablestamina. Wow. Respect to Ryan for mixing sound and to McNally Smith for providing the sound system. After things wrapped up at Central Joe and I headed over to Sauce to catch Puppy Dogs & Ice Cream, Kristoff Krane and Sector 7G. Having been to Sauce before and knowing that it's no place for a mic stand Ross was cool enough to let me patch out of the soundboard. The crow's nest the FOH is in there is pretty wild. I don't dislike Sauce as much as I used to. The staff were all pretty stand up folks. Another 3.5 hours of sleep was had.

Here's to not having to go to shows immediately after work. Have you seen any live photography from the Twin Cities music scene? Then you've probably seen some of Adam Bubolz's handy work. Adam turns 30 today and has booked a pretty chainless show at the Turf featuring Tight Phantomz (Chicago), STNNNG (Minneapolis/St. Paul), Tanks (Iowa City) and a special surprise set from an unnamed band. If you're in the neighborhood perhaps you'd like to stop down and thank him for all of the great stills he's provided us with over the years. Late show? Possible nap after work? Thank you god of naps.

Graham O' Brien to Release Solo Project

This morning I was pleasantly surprised to open an email containing a track off of Graham O' Brien's upcoming solo release. Wow. I'm currently breaking my "no music at work" rule. Over the course of the past few years I've enjoyed recording Graham's various musical incarnations. He's a monster. Like many of the best musicians the Twin Cities has to offer he's constantly in at least a half dozen bands at the same time and that's all while working on his own solo material. Graham mentioned that "the main idea behind this project is to explore some of the textures created by samples and live drumming and instrumentation." It's a commonly shared opinion around town that Graham leads the new generation of TC drummers. "Recycle Maker" features Kristoff Krane on vocals rekindling a musical partnership that has lasted the better part of a decade.

May 2010 be better than 2009!

What I'm perhaps most excited about at the moment is NYE. Pretty sure I chose The Turf Club. Third Annual New Year's Eve Cover Night with Vampire Hands (Television), Leisure Birds (Monks), Daughters of the Sun (Jesus and Mary Chain), Marijuana Deathsquads (Brian Eno). Unfortunately Secret Language (Fleetwood Mac) was not recorded...it was however very Punk and uplifting. You missed out? It happens. Later on, at the dawn of the new year Finger Pressure's annual NYE set at Community Gardens was recorded into a little metal box. Let me just say that these 1s & 0s are far to good for the likes of MTV or top 40 radio. Be excited to check this out!

Closing out the year at The Turf Club...

I've spent many late nights at The Turf Club this year. I'm quite fond of the place and that's why I'm happy to say it looks like I'll be ending 2009 with back to back nights at The Turf.

Another end of the year homecoming show that delivers on any musical or social level you want to comment on. The nonfuckwithable duo Themselves co-headlined and local favorites Kristoff Krane and Sector7G rounded out the bill. When these guys are all in the same building together and Mesa Pizza is across the street where else would you be on a Friday night in Dinkytown? There's a huge buzz about No Bird Sing around town and for good reason...they are the best new local band of 2009. This evening was a great time in general for being a gathering of friends in my favorite Minneapolis venue. Kristoff Krane and Black Blondie also lit the room up. Special guest DJ James Diers kept the party moving. No Bird Sing's self-titled debut album is available as a digital download on various sites (Amazon and iTunes for starters) as well as a limited CD run. The CDs were only being sold at the two release shows; Eclipse Records (9/11) and The Triple Rock (9/12). You should contact the band to inquire about remaining copies. Chris is a friend but that's not why I would recommend people check out his debut solo record. Check it out because it's a stellar album from start to finish. Both sets are unique in vibe and feeling. The AA set features a very attentive younger crowd whereas the Late set features folks drinking and getting lose. Chris also recently published his first book entitled the "The Other" which I purchased a copy of the other night and am looking forward to reading.
