Fanfaronage Album Release Party!
With
Kristoff Krane
The Triple Rock Social Club
$10 In Advance/$14 Day of Show and At The Door!
18+ | 9:00 PM | $14.00
I've know this Chris since 2005 and his talent never ceases to amaze me. He fosters a wisdom and intellect that far surpasses many 20 somethings you're going to run across today. I haven't even started talking about the music he releases which is why you should stop through The Triple Rock this evening. He's always such a busy musician that I didn't even want to bother with calling him to see who the surprise guests are. I have some amazingly sure bets that I'm not going to mention and I know that we'll have a brother looking on from some place much happier than this here planet earth.

Heidi Barton Stink: A Charming Gut CD Release Tonight!
Heidi Barton Stink
See More Perspective
Desdamona
Guante
With DJ Ganzo Bean
Hell's Kitchen
Thursday May 17th
10pm 18+ $5
RSVP.
"Heidi Barton Stink is a transgender community organizer, activist and hip hop artist based in Minneapolis. While it’s true that those words don’t often go together, Heidi is developing a career around the idea that there can be both beauty and power in breaking molds, blazing trails and not being afraid to stand out. Whether rapping about queer liberation, music industry politics or the importance of love (or just engaging in some good old-fashioned raw, mic-ripping hip hop) her work is explicitly political, deeply personal,
often hilarious and always sincere."

No Bird Sing - "Pretty Pocket Snatchers" Live at The Cedar
On Friday April 29th No Bird Sing released their new LP Theft of the Commons, the follow up to 2009's No Bird Sing. Kristoff Krane and Kill the Vultures supported. NBS has been one of my favorite bands since first catching them at The Uptown in October 2008 and I am glad they are receiving the attention they deserve. Graham O'Brien was kind enough to pass on his exclusive mix of "Pretty Pocket Snatchers" from The Cedar.

Astronautalis "The Wondersmith And His Sons" @ The Triple Rock
Hands down the best hip hop show I've seen all year and it's going to take quite a lot to rival it. Honestly, it's a bit embarrassing that in 2011 I have somehow managed to miss all of the previous 5 or 6 Astronautalis sets in Minneapolis. What gives? I got deep into some Makers and never got around to asking Andy if it was cool to circulate the whole set so I'm only going to post this one track for now. The new album is going to be a freight train. Astronautalis has been on tour with Sims and The Triple Rock was SOLD OUT Friday night. MaLLy got it going. Thanks to Andy for being cool with me recording. What's this Four Fists (Astronautalis & P.O.S.) business from SXSW? That sounds dangerous.

If you're into this track and don't have a copy of the new album Bad Time Zoo it's available through the Doomtree Store as well as on iTunes. Production by Lazerbeak. What up Ander.

Guante rises above his contemporaries no matter want he's getting into that particular day. A couple of years ago when Guante & Big Cats! joined forces I knew it meant trouble for those who had gotten used to being at the top, whatever that means these days. If you're not familiar with Big Cats! production you can get familiar at bigcatsbeats.com. Thanks to The Fine Line for being cool with me recording.

Graham O'Brien Releases Debut Album
Graham O'Brien - Live Drums promo video from NOECHO Records on Vimeo.
Graham O'Brien's debut solo album Live Drums is now available for purchase or download through NOECHO Records. It is also available via iTunes. You may be familiar with Graham's work in No Bird Sing, Abzorbr or any number of other bands he's played in or done production for but Live Drums is some next level business. The album features appearances by Kristoff Krane, Adam Svec, Alicia Wiley as well as Eric Blair and Robert Mulrennan of No Bird Sing.Graham's debut solo effort, Live Drums lies somewhere near the boundaries of the Instrumental Hip Hop genre. As the title suggests, each song on the album is shaped by Graham’s drum set performances - which are inventive and creatively recorded. The dark, contrasting layers of synthetic and sampled sounds make the record an engaging listen. Compositionally, this album is influenced by DJ Shadow, Portishead and The Gaslamp Killer, among others.

Welcome to night 3 of the 5 night run that I'm currently engaged in. No Bird Sing and Bouncer Fighter supported Kill the Vultures this evening. Alexei had just flown back from France on Friday but his vocals were top notch and he never missed a beat. Anatomy kept the set tight and moving. I don't believe I've been able to catch up with KTV since 11/14/09 so this will be the first and only 2010 recording that is released. Get it on ze ipod! Thanks to Kill the Vultures and The Triple Rock for allowing me to document this set.

FREE Download of the new Guante & Big Cats! mixtape, "DON'T BE NICE"
If you don't know about Guante & Big Cats! you should. Like the Facespace? If you so choose you can like Guante & Big Cats! on there.
The FREE MIXTAPE DOWNLOAD is available here.
Here are some words from Guante regarding this release:
Me and Big Cats! just put out a mixtape. And it's free. It's a mix of brand new songs, a few older tracks and some great live audio of our band. All original beats by Big Cats! Progressive politics, storytelling, punchline raps-- lots of fun. We're proud of it. We hope you like it.
If you've never heard of us, a quick refresher: Guante is a rapper, two-time National Poetry Slam champion, activist and arts coordinator of the Canvas, a St. Paul teen center. Big Cats! is a producer and multi-instrumentalist who has worked with Sage Francis, P.O.S., Toki Wright, Abstract Rude and more.
"Guante and Big Cats! create intelligent, political hip hop that mercifully doesn't come off as preachy or self-righteous. It's sobering, demanding your attention like a car crash, yet emotional and alarmingly intimate at times." --Michael L. Walsh, City Pages
"Earnestness can go wrong in hip hop. On this album, it goes very right." --Sage Francis, Strange Famous Records (on the duo’s last album, “An Unwelcome Guest”)
"Giving you something to think about while nodding your head to his nimble, casual flow, Guante could very well follow Atmosphere and P.O.S. in the long line of outstanding rappers to break out from the Midwest." --CMJ Artist Spotlight

MC/VL
The Old Bar (The Triple Rock)
Minneapolis, MN
Sunday June 6th 2010
So Mara's birthday party featured MC/VL playing a set and spinning records in the old bar as well sets from Prairie Sons, Voytek and Class of 86 on the venue side. With the 414s set up in the other room I had to channel Lomax and MacGyver, a couple of long time heroes to get this recording made. Drew hooked me up with a rag that I folded up to cradle the Sony PCM-D50 as I pointed it to the speaker positioned above the door. The capabilities of the D50's internals are well known. This deck is extremely well made and the internals don't mess around. This was recorded at 24 bit 48 kHz. The dithering to 16 bit was done in Sound Forge Pro 10 and the 320kbps mp3 encoding was done using RazorLame.
MC/VL - "Live From The Old Bar"
Voytek - "Saturday Night Again" (Live at The Triple Rock)

Missing shows already...
The plan was to record Marijuana Deathsquads at Nick & Eddie last night but instead of getting back into town at 6:30pm Wednesday I got back in at 6:00am on Thursday morning. See you next week I hope.
Stopped through Loring Park to say hello to some friends tonight. After getting word that Puppy Dogs & Ice Cream and Muja Messiah were playing The Triple Rock I headed for the train to record but feeling pretty drained I said hello to some folks and headed South.
Summer is here and sleep deprivation has set in. Be safe all. 24/7 keeps me safe.

P.O.S. Gets The Band Together
Word is out by now that P.O.S. played a series of three (The Turf Club, The Triple Rock & Nick and Eddie) "secret shows" in the Twin Cities this past week. Some relied on twitter for this news others just happened to be making their usual rounds about town. The purpose of these shows was to debut a new full band set heading into Coachella. Anyone happen to catch the set at the Gobi Stage earlier this afternoon? Well if missed out this week don't fret because they will be playing an extended set Sunday May 30th at this year's Soundset 2010 at Canterbury Park. Tickets can be purchased here. The band features DJ Plain Ole Bill (Get Cryphy), Ryan Olson (Gayngs, Marijuana Deathsquads & Building Better Bombs), Benjamin Ivascu (STNNNG, Private Dancer, Building Better Bombs & MDS to name a few) and Isaac Gale (Building Better Bombs & Marijuana Deathsquads).
P.O.S. - "Never Better" Live at The Triple Rock (04/13/10)
Official releases are available through Rhymesayers Entertainment and can be purchased at Fifth Element Online.
