Nomia (Minneapolis) and Sweet Cobra (Chicago) supported. Thank you to Russian Circles and The Triple Rock for allowing me to record all of these shows for the past four years. Thanks to Zach for another sick mix. Thanks JL. I've seen Russian Circles a handful of times but the one set I never released due to it being a st3@lth affair was Tempe, AZ '06 with The Velvet Teen, P.O.S. and Minus the Bear. That business was pretty crazy. I don't think Stef was expecting to see me in the desert. A pretty young lady accompanied me to the show but we left before Minus the Bear to check out the pool. Gone are the salad days.

Have you heard? Nomia is back. There was a last minute show with Guzzlemug at the Hexagon last April, then a couple shows in May and a couple more in June. I unfortunately missed the June 17th show with Empires but I was able to catch up with them supporting Russian Circles and Sweet Cobra. Some people may remember the 6/23/07 tape also recorded at The Triple Rock. It's still available here on the Live Music Archive. While you're at the Archive you may also want to check out the 6/28/10 In-studio Nomia recorded for Nowlikephotographs which airs on Radio K Monday nights at 8-10pm CST. Thanks to Nomia and The Triple Rock for allowing me to record. Stay tuned for the Russian Circles set.

Torrent what? FLAC who?

I've been seeding recordings on The Traders' Den since the site went live in late 2004. It rose from the ashes of the late great Sharingthegroove.org, which was probably my introduction to BitTorrent in 2003. I kicked things off at TTD with The Arcade Fire's first stop in Minneapolis, the 11/27/04 set at The 400. It was posted in less than 24 hours after the show. Anyways, TTD became my home base for a long time. It didn't have the traffic of other torrent sites that offered live recordings but the overall vibe could not be beat.

I created this blog in January 2006 but didn't start utilizing it until 2007. At that time the links were exclusive to TTD. Back then we were all hard asses about things getting bumped down to mp3 so it was FLAC or die. Slowly some of us began to give into the ipod toting earbud wearing masses...some sooner than others. As you can see I've eased up on my stance a bit. Some would argue that even 320kbps mp3 is overkill but do you think I would have you listening to anything else besides the highest quality mp3 format possible? I dare say that some folks may be missing me a bit over on The Den but this post is to give respect where respect is due. I am just realizing that the last thing I seeded on TTD was the 11/27/09 Earthless set from The Triple Rock. It's also the 285th torrent I've posted on the site. Does that make me a bit of a dork? Perhaps to some. Much has happened in the past 5 plus years but I will never forget where this all started.

Out of the 285 torrents posted in the past five years 23 remain active. Some of the torrents have 0 seeds at them moment but if you want to hear it badly enough just bump the thread to the first page and I or someone else would be happy to help you snag it. Registration on TTD is free and takes about 90 seconds. If you're new to BitTorrent and FLAC please check out some of the helpful links along the right side over there. It's all freeware and pretty user friendly so don't be afraid. Email me with any questions.

I know the good people of Minneapolis & St. Paul are in need of a Young Widows fix. Between a drummer's broken wrist, the tragic loss of a friend and a broken down van the band can hardly be faulted for missing their last three local shows. Hopefully they'll pardon some minor message board venting. Please do support these young lads from Louisville, KY if you have the chance to catch them.

It's likely I'll sound like a huge dork by saying this but this was my fourth time recording Russian Circles including a rare st3@lth job in Tempe, AZ on the Minus the Bear tour with P.O.S. and The Velvet Teen. I believe the other shows were all at The Triple Rock. It's been a while since I've listened to any of the older recordings but I can easily say that sonically 11/09 is at the top of the list. A solid 60 minute set with a mix of old jams and new jams. Lungs (Minneapolis) and Git Some (Denver) supported. "Tapers" across the country and beyond thank Russian Circles for tolerating our need to capture their sounds into our little black boxes. Please support Russian Circles by purchasing the official releases.

Who needs Young Widows when you have the opportunity to discover a top shelf local metal band? Here's a little something to listen to as the cholesterol courses through you veins and you fade into a tryptophan coma. Don't miss out on seeing Lungs live. Their s/t EP is available through Escucha!/Self Inflicted records and purchased here. Lungs and Git Some (Denver) supported Russian Circles (Chicago). By the way, broken transportation is no joke and many would have loved to have seen Young Widows tonight. It would have been a serious 4 band bill. Perhaps next time. Cheers.

Golden Birthdays & Tour Managers...

So if I let Thursday's tour manager know that the 29th is my "golden birthday" do you think they'll show mercy on the taping front? I'm very interested in getting a recording of the La Dispute set and was given the green light by them to do so. I've heard from people on the West coast that The Fall of Troy are cool with it as well. In all honesty if I need to pack it up before Thursday go on to accomplish this than I'm down. Taping "bigger" bands can get tricky. Even if they're cool with it they may get trumped by the management. I also haven't tried taping at The Varsity since my homie Erik's departure so things could get interesting.

Unfortunately, Young Widows have dropped off the tour but will be returning to The Triple Rock in November with Russian Circles. Their previous two shows (Triple Rock & Turf Club) are in the archives.

Besides being a gorgeous venue what's the best part about seeing shows at The Varsity? Mesa Pizza is across the street!

In the interest of full disclosure...

I also intended on taping the Russian Circles show at The Triple Rock a couple of Sundays ago but that didn't happen. 3 for 4 on Russian Circle shows. Apparently you can't win them all.

New torrents coming today or tomorrow though...

Of the 3 shows I've taped this is definitely the best one. I don't think I've seen a bad Russian Circles show, this band only gets better. Pick up a CD and support them. I believe the new album is out in May. Chances are this is not tracked properly. There's a couple of new songs in there. Dälek and Young Widows also played. Long live the Triple Rock.
