Recently and Coming Up.
03/09/12 - City on the Make, Umami, Oaks @ Hell's Kitchen
Not going to lie, I went solely to see City on the Make for the 24th time and Oaks for the 1st time. Stating that neither band disappointed would be a severe understatement.
03/14/12 - Skoal Kodiak, Taboo, Ancestral Diet, Mother of Fire @ The Entry
All 4 of these sets were amazing in their own way. It was especially an honor to be able to document Taboo.
03/15/12 - Vernon Wayne, Buildings, Bird Sounds, Goodnight Ritual @ Hell's Kitchen
If I was in a band playing shows around town being on a bill with Bird Sounds would be intimidating. They just need to play longer sets.
03/17/12 - Went to Harriet Brewing last minute since I was in the neighborhood for a BBQ. Had a delicious pour of the limited East Side and got a growler of Divine Oculust on the way out. The BBQ was a success as well. Afterwords I headed to the Ra|hole to see Brain Tumors and Libyans. This all went unrecorded but I had a stellar time nonetheless. Even made it to Northeast in time for a very nice party. It was a long day and night...not because of any sort of americanized "holiday" but rather just because that's what Saturdays are for.
THIS WEEK:
(Not much going on)
03-21 - Basuketto @ The Red Stagg
03-22 - Goatflower, Dust Buns, Awkward Bodies, Time Destroyer @ Hexagon
03-22 - Dads (Omaha), Rollerblade, Cadette, the Velveteens @ Chamber of Secrets
03-22 - Bala Clavas (Houston), Mar Harbine, Bellow, Collin Gorman Weiland @ Bacon
03-23 - Cursive @ The 400 Bar
03-23 - Crusader No Remorse, Prostate, Kr Grauwacke @ Surfs Up
03-23 - Trevor's 30th Birthday Party w/ Tornado, The Skinnys, Teenage Moods, Southside Desire @ The Nomad
03-23 - Jonny Corndawg @ The Triple Rock
03-24 - Zoo Animal @ Treehouse (10am)
03-24 - Chastity Brown, Black Audience, Romantica @ The Cedar
03-24 - Sleeping in the Aviary, Buffalo Moon, Umami, Speed's The Name @ The Triple Rock
03-24 - La Dispute @ The Varsity
03-24 - Condominium + feedtime @ Grumpy's DT
03-25 - Sleep Tight @ Hymie's (3pm)
03-25 - TFATT, They Live, The Devil's Caravan @ Honey

Let me start by saying that in my very humble opinion Mother of Fire is one of the top 5 most talented bands actively playing Minneapolis right now. They played 12 dates in Europe last March as well as an Eastern US tour in support of their latest album. I wish someone had the money to pay for a huge national tour. I received word from Naomi the other day that it was cool to post this and believe me when I say it's a recording that I've been extremely excited to share. As much as I like my stage lip recording (that upfront sound is incredible!) as always PJ was on top of his game and had this 4 track balcony + soundboard mix done shortly after Heliotrope. I spent a month or so trying to discern song titles but it's my understanding that these songs are mostly new and as of yet untitled. So if you haven't heard any of the new Mother of Fire material by all means check out this brilliant recording. Thank you to Mother of Fire, PJ and Heliotrope. Special thanks to The Loring Theater for allowing us to document the festival.
When did Mother of Fire officially begin? Were there any projects or bands that you were involved in prior to this?
Jason: Officially, we began in December of 2007. Our first shows were billed as Blastoidea: an ancient extinct starfish-like creature. Then we changed it to Lambs for a few shows. All of this was with the drum machine. It wasn't until we hooked up with Andie that Mother of Fire came to us.
Naomi: County Z and Rotten Living, both anger and art punk violin/bass/drum trios, toured quite a bit from 2000-2005. Jason and I were in The Royal Flycatchers, where we put on elaborate performances involving, choreography, costumes, film: the works. We'd create a whole set and visual world employing a dozen or more artists and then perform the show once.
Andie played in a drum duo Jose Bove. Also, Hex (viola/tuba/drums) and now Myrrh. There have been many bands and projects for us all, too many to list. - digitalisindustries.com

Myrrh, Children of Euler and Scaphe supported Clump at their cassette release show for Chrism. I first saw Myrrh in 2009 at The Bedlam Theatre and they've never stopped awing me. No disrespect intended to the other tight sets of the evening but Myrrh stole the show in my opinion. They have no website and to my knowledge they only have one cassette of recorded material that's available at the shows. Thanks to the bands and to The Triple Rock for allowing me to record.

Mother of Fire are amazing. This was Reviler.org's First Anniversary show featuring Camden, Orchard Thief, Buffalo Moon and Mother of Fire. I'm not releasing the full 5 song set because one of the songs is unreleased and I'm not familiar with the other two titles. Please support Mother of Fire by picking up their LP from De Stijl Records or one of the fine local shops who stock it. Thanks to The Triple Rock Social Club for hosting.

What is No Assumption?
Art of This and Artcodex Present:
No Assumption: A Collaborative Exhibition of Art in a Residence.
Curated by Vandana Jain, Kevin Loecke, Troy Pieper & Mirelle Zacharis.
No Assumption examines the themes surrounding property, the pursuit of happiness, and contemporary American domesticity in the context of the foreclosure crisis. Artists and members of the community have been invited to exhibit relevant artworks and programming in a converted (and foreclosed-upon) storefront home in Northeast Minneapolis’ Arts District. Artworks will explore a broad range of subjects relative to the circumstances the home and its former owner have endured in the effort to keep the home and family intact. Topics examined range from bureaucracy, tragedy and loss; real estate and lending; healthcare and disability; to secrets, memories, labor and leisure; security, and self-preservation within daily domestic existence.
No Assumption, itself born of a personal domestic tragedy, is conceived of as an homage not only to a specific family, a deceased mortgage holder and the property in question, but also to similar scenarios experienced by countless families across the country in recent years. As the clock counts down toward eviction, the property will be transformed into a creative conversation about our rights, our desires, and the structural foundations upon which we build our lives.

That West Bank Apartment Should Have Been Mine.
The folks running the WBSC have something great going on and I encourage you to keep an eye on their calendar. You may sweat out a few ghosts while there but you'll enjoy yourself while doing so. After getting set up I had to run some compact discs down to Chris at The Triple Rock and happened to run into Mr. Salinas, curator of your favorite Funk/Soul/Blues dance night Hot Pants as well as many other parties around town. Always good running into this fellow. Back at the WBSC the potluck was in full swing and sets had begun. For a little taste of The Somethin' Else #2 I wanted to share Makr's set (Live from the West Bank Social Center 07/09/10). If you get your stuff in order you can catch him again tonight at the Whitesand/Bandlands LP Release Show with Moonstone and Visions of Christ (who also played WBSC). So thank you to Jon Davis, The West Bank Social Center and everyone who performed last night.
It was at this particular point in the evening where I chose to fail Mother of Fire. Then again you don't need some shoddy live two track recording from The Bedlam to discover this band. The new LP is available through Destijl Recs. It wasn't time to retire yet so I asked Fish to head to Memory Lanes. Power of 2 had a few songs left and I rather enjoyed what I caught. I had stopped through for The Yoleus and they did not disappoint.
With 30 minutes left before the clock struck 2:00am it was time to see what was shakin' at the Hexagon. I walked straight into a Bight Club set which was a pleasant surprise. It made me recall the first time I saw Jeremy at The Suburban World Theatre in April '07. Call number two to 24/7 and to all a good night.
