This is the type of event that I'm glad I'm around to tape. Some dude was sitting in the Minneapolis Town Hall back in 1948 recording Lead Belly right? I wish I could've met that guy cause it's a great recording for '48. Back to present day...timeless music with a well balanced mixture of traditional folks songs and original compositions. Having seen the full band at the last handful of shows this was a rare duo performance (which is how Roma di Luna began) with Channy & Alexei playing to a crowd of 20-30 people in the basement of Hosmer Library. Hosmer is a community library located in lovely South Minneapolis, check it out. Being that it was a very intimate setting I didn't want to bust in with the standard large mic stand. Instead, I brought a mini-stand that I bought for on stage taping of instrumental performances. The mics were centered about 2' in front of them and about 4' off the ground. I'm extremely happy with the recording but it was understandably quiet to start with. I resisted the urge to crank the gain pots on the UA-5 because I knew the noise floor would be evident at some point. I wanted to bring up the levels without using compression so with the peak being at -7.4dB I first added 7dB gain. It still wasn't as full as I wanted it to be so I went back to the raw recording for another attempt. This time using Bury Me, the "loudest" song played. I Normalized just under 0dB to avoid clipping or using compression. At this point I was happy with the levels but it still remains a fairly quiet recording so on playback you'll want to turn it up a bit more than you might for say an amplified "rock" show. Included are scans of the flyer & set list.
Many thanks of course to Roma di Luna for allowing the local scene to tape them in many different settings but thanks also go to Hosmer Library for hosting such events for the community to enjoy. There are only 3 more performances left in the series this season but I have my eye on the 8/23 Spaghetti Western String Co. date. I think that could be a really great recording.
"The Hosmer Music Series is a world music performance series hosted at both the Hosmer Community Library,(347 E. 36th St.) and the Minneapolis Central Library, (Pohlad Hall, 300 Nicollet Mall, Minneapolis). This performance series is sponsored by The Friends of Minneapolis Public Library, the Lyndale Neighborhood Association, and KFAI Fresh Air Radio 90.3 FM. Concerts are free and open to the public. CD sales available. Call Hosmer Community Library at (612) 630-6950 for more information." - friendsofmpl.org
It was good hangin' with my friends Dean & Karen. These sexy MBHOs are Dean's after all.
On the Roma di Luna front there are only three more shows on the books for this year so be sure to check them out if you're in the area. They will be taking a well deserved break to welcome their first born into the world, baby Casselle is due on election day. Barack Moon Casselle has a nice ring to it if you ask me.

"ck1b source: gain on V3 reduced shortly into 1st song, 2 mild clicks can be heard, one click for each channel, volume envelope was used in wavelab to even out the level some." - Steve
The clicks mentioned are VERY minor and very quick. I included track 10 for a couple of reasons...it hasn't been played much in 08 and it gives you a taste of the other source. I think the Beyer source sounds great as well and almost included both in the same torrent but decided not to. If there is demand for a torrent of the full Beyer source just let me know...I'd be happy to hook it up. I do plan on uploading each source to the Archive (on their own) at some point in time but it might not be for a while.

Kill the Vultures have a number of fine releases out there and all are highly recommended. They've also been working on a new album so keep an eye out for that. Word was they were going to play one new song at this show but it must have been scrapped from the set list.
Oddjobs was a hip hop group formed around 1998 by Minneapolis MCs Advizer (Adam Waytz) and Crescent Moon (Alexei Casselle) and St. Paul producers/DJs Anatomy (Stephen Lewis) and Deetalx (Devon Callahan). Another MC, Nomi (Mario Demira) joined in 2001. Oddjobs split in 2005 but reformed as Kill the Vultures, minus DJ Deetalx. Advizer and Nomi are also not currently playing with Kill the Vultures. Nomi is making music as Power Struggle out in the Bay Area and Adam is in Chicago going to school.
Playing the Doomtree crew record CD release show with I Self Devine. This is probably the best sounding KTV recording I've made out of at least a dozen.

I had been looking forward to this show since finding out about it sometime in May. I first stumbled across a listing for Crescent Moon is in Big Trouble on the Triple Rock calendar. That alone was enough for me to add it to my calendar...then a couple weeks later I saw that Mel Gibson & the Pants had been added to the bill. OK then, so two of my favorite local bands are playing the same show at my favorite venue...I'm there. Then sometime in early June I was scrolling down the listings at the Triple Rock's site and noticed that CITY ON THE MAKE had been added to the show. Now, it's common that one or more bands that I like or at least appreciate end up playing the same show together but it's rather rare that a bill this solid (IMHO) comes along. Crescent Moon is in Big Trouble ended up playing first per their call, MG&TP second and City on the Make threw down at the end of the night.

Check out a copy of the EP. It's one of the best releases of 2008. Some of the most talented musicians in the Twin Cities are in this band.
Much respect to the Nomad and it's staff for organizing such events and being an all around great establishment.

Well what can I say, more stellar indie rock from Minneapolis. You may know some of these fellas from the bands Houston, Manplanet, Align and Harp & Finial.
This was the Threadbare reunion show. Threadbare's first show in 10 years in honor bassist Dustin Perry's sister Stephanie Perry. Stephanie lost her battle with cancer in 2006. All proceeds from this show went to the Stephanie Perry Scholarship fund.

I chose to spend my 7/7/7 at the Triple Rock (surprised?). Much of that decision had to do with wanting to tape an indie rock band that everyone had been talking and writing about. Many others spent the night at one or more of the other 6 venues participating in 7/7/7. These venues included the Hexagon Bar, the Uptown Bar, the Nomad World Pub, Memory Lanes, the Turf Club and Big V's (2 St. Paul venues).

Freestyle meets free jazz and now that I have permission to release whatever I want it's time to kick out the jams. Face Candy shows are always an experience because you never know who's going to be on stage or what you're going to get. I thought about doing a two disc compilation with the best tracks from six or so shows but realized people would probably prefer full sets. Since we're talking improv all of the song titles are made up.
In 2006 Rhymesayers released Face Candy's first and only album "This Is Where We Were." It's a live album comprised of recordings made during an 8 date Midwest tour. The line up for the album included Eyedea (vocals), Mazta I (vocals), Kristoff Krane (vocals), Carnage (vocals), JT Bates (drums) and Casey O' Brien (bass). Face Candy have since continued playing shows in MN/WI as a trio featuring Eyedea, Casey and JT. With that said, Chris has always been a member and he's joined them for at least half of if not all of the set at 95% of the shows I've seen. I've also seen two shows that brought Carnage back to the fold to provide percussion in JT's absence.
Michael, Casey and JT are also in Carbon Carousel. Chris and Casey are also in Abzorbr. JT is in a dozen bands at any given time and I'd have to say he's my favorite Twin Cities drummer. Check out Carnage's solo material or anything he's done in Ill Chemistry.
The next Face Candy release is going to be a studio album culled from a non-stop 48 hour recording session that has yet to go down.

Super tight and super sick indie rock from St. Paul, MN. You need to check these guys out. This show was with City on the Make and The Tender Sweaters.
"Mike Ries, Mike Coyne, and Chris Tures started playing together in 2005 and were joined shortly after by Dan Ries.
They are currently working on their second full-length album, tentatively due to be self-released in summer of 2008. Their first album, "This Way To Gunshire..." is considered to be an underground classic; so far underground in fact, that all proof of this claim has melted, given the proximity to the center of the earth. Not any old album, but the first in a trilogy - or "thrillogy.""

If you like what you hear I certainly encourage you to purchase some music by Roma di Luna. The EP "Face of My Friends" is currently out of print but the debut LP "Find Your Way Home" and the new LP "Casting the Bones" are both available on CD as well as digitally from several sites. All three of these have been self-released by Roma di Luna. Support local music.

...and with that a short break.
I'm actually looking forward to laying low until the 27th but unfortunately these two shows are on the same night. I've been meaning to hit some shows at Eclipse since they started booking again but Dosh has been on the calendar for a long time. Might try cabbing it to First Avenue but would have to leave immediately after City on the Make...pretty bummed since I really like all 3 bands. Living where we live this predicament happens often but I guess it's not a bad problem to have.

I hope a 14 hour turn around time isn't to long to wait. Out of a half dozen this was hands down the best City on the Make show I've seen. Granted, I can't speak for the shows in 2006 but this band only continues to get tighter and tighter. When you come out you can expect to never be bored or see the same thing twice and in my opinion that's going to keep the people coming out. Thank you to the 400 Bar for being cool with the recording of this show and to Ron for the stellar mix. All 3 sets sounded great. Be sure to check out Dragons Power Up and The Tender Sweaters as well.

Notes: Thanks to First Avenue (www.first-avenue.com) for allowing people to tape when the artist's policy permits it. Thanks to JhonnyOnasis for making sure taping went smoothly, maryr for the setlist help and of course thank you to the Dresden Dolls for being cool with audio & video documentation.
A reseed request was made by someone who actively posts many popular torrents on TTD. I've checked out several of them myself so of course I was happy to fill the request. I always really enjoyed this recording so it will be fun to get it out to a new wave of people, especially since new Dresden Dolls sets have been recently circulated.
Other than minor tweaks to the format of the .txt file this is the same exact file set that I originally seeded on 10-26-06.

I love taping at the Cedar because the recordings always sound so nice. I did boost the levels on this. I ran them conservative to prevent the applause from clipping. Great bill all around with Jeremy Messersmith and Roma di Luna open. Please check out The Pines music and purchase a disc if you dig it. This show was also taped by my friend Dave Kunath (Nak CM1000/CP101).
