No Bird Sing :: Ars Poetica single

As previously mentioned No Bird Sing recently had their single for Ars Poetica mastered by Brian Johnson at Winterland Studios.

The single can be downloaded @ 320kbps mp3 here and here. Please repost these links wherever you like and or email the track to anyone you think may dig it.

In related news, Joe & Bobby's other band, Hyder Ali will be releasing their debut EP very soon. Graham is also keeping busy with several different bands. The most up to date information on his gigs can always be found on his page.

This was the 2nd of 4 residency shows featuring Kristoff Krane & friends that are taking place every Saturday in January at the Depot in Hopkins, MN. This show featured No Bird Sing and Big Quarters. First of all the Depot is a great place and I'm sure many of us would have liked to have had a similar space when we were coming up. If you're in the metro area the Depot deserves your patronage. Amy, Eric, Ryan and many others whom I didn't formally meet, thank you for doing what you're doing.

You're now invited to check out an amazing Twin Cities band that goes by the name of No Bird Sing. Some people grabbed the Uptown tape from last October. Others may recognize the members of NBS from other bands including; Hyder Ali, Abzorbr, Junkyard Empire, Keston & Westdal, dial_system and Root Decision to name a few. With that said, No Bird Sing stand on their own. I'm really into what these guys are doing and it's highly likely you'll find me standing under a pair of mics at the shows they have coming up.

Please contact me if you would like a hifi copy of the newly mastered single for Ars Poetica. Much respect to Brian Johnson at Winterland Studios for the stellar job he did on the mastering.

To be torrented after the move...

What up all. I'm moving but fear not, I'm staying in South Minneapolis and I'm of course going to keep taping. I might be without the net for a week or so, we'll see. Getting a connection at the new place ASAP is obviously a priority for me and for what I do.

I have some shows I'd like to torrent but they'll probably have to wait until after the move. For anyone who cares to know what they are I've listed them below.

Been wanting to get the Dosh CD release out there because it's great. Also want to finish up the Mill City Scene release party sets. Not wanting to lug gear around with me on NYE I popped into The Entry and got Soundboards of everything. Same goes for Mel Gibson & the Pants and Lookbook on the 3rd. I don't like running mics in the Kitty Cat Klub so that's another SBD. I love The Clown Lounge but any chance I get to see Fat Kid Wednesdays at the AQ, the Cedar etc. I'm there. I won't be torrenting the Face Candy sets from last night because they were recorded for an official release. I'll try to get the Fantastic Merlins out there because it's some great jazz. Also looking forward to putting some more Carnage sets out.

2008-06-27 - Dosh @ First Avenue
2008-12-27 - Carnage + Kristoff Krane @ The Entry
2008-12-31 - Eyedea & Abilities + Kristoff Krane + Sector7G + Carnage @ The Entry (SBD)
2009-01-02 - Fat Kid Wednesdays @ The Artists' Quarter
2009-01-03 - Lookbook @ Kitty Cat Klub (SBD)
2009-01-09 - The Fantastic Merlins @ The Black Dog Cafe

Going to try and make it to The Depot in Hopkins for Kristoff Krane, Big Quarters and No Bird Sing tonight. If everything goes well I'll post the first Hopkins torrent in the history of torrents.

This was a show that was put on by Mill City Scene to celebrate the release of their first issue. Mill City Scene is a newspaper/magazine/website that covers all things concerning the local hip hop scene in Minneapolis. This was the sickest local hip hop bill I've seen in a long long time. As you'll find on the recordings many of the performers felt the same way as well. If you live in the metro area pick up a copy of MCS and if you don't you can still read all of the great articles on their website. This show included performances by; El Guante & See More Perspective, Carnage, Hyder Ali, Kristoff Krane and Big Quarters. There was not a weak set in the bunch and you'll get to hear all of them.

I chose to post the Hyder Ali set first because they're my favorite local band to come out of 2008. I haven't seem them since the Kristoff Krane CD Release in September and I was excited to get another set out. I'm putting the soundboard out there because the mic source is full of people talking about porches and stuff. I usually don't get into the spammy street team stuff but if anyone reading was up for going to the Current's site and requesting their new single "Paper Dolls" it would be greatly appreciated by me and likely the band as well. If you're interested you can do so here.

I ventured out into a minus 25 degree wind chill to tape this show but I'm glad I did. I also made an honest attempt at the set list. After the Arrivals set I raised the mics a foot or less to get above the chatting a little more. This ended up being a good move.

Naked Raygun came to play a two night stand at the Triple Rock in I believe it was 2006. They played an All Ages show one night and a 21+ the next. This time around they were in town to help the Triple Rock celebrate their 10th Anniversary. The Framed (Minneapolis) and The Arrivals (Chicago) opened the show.

Naked Raygun are one of a kind and I encourage you to support them by purchasing their official releases. I'm sure many people already have.

This was a special Roma di Luna Holiday show with the Chastity Brown Band opening. Thanks go out to the artists and to the Cedar for allowing these sets to be recorded. There were 3 tapers in attendance (AKG 414, Microtech Gefell & MBHO). The original material that Roma di Luna produces is always top notch but this particular show is worth checking out for the chilling renditions of "Silent Night" and "Stand By Me" alone. Trust me, you won't be disappointed by anything in between either. The Cedar was filled to capacity and I still wish more people would have gotten the chance to witness this great evening of music. Long live the Cedar.

I know I'm always hyping the shows I post because, well I want people to check them out. With that said, this is a recording that I'm really excited to bring to people. I can't really think of a better way to close out the year as far as sharing recordings goes even though there are some great shows left. I started taping shows to document the music that I was into and like any "taper" I enjoy listening to live music. Not everyone digs live recordings, that's cool. I've always had nothing but respect for Heiruspecs but unfortunately I showed up late to the party late with some bands and as I was really getting into them back in 05 they decided it was time to slow things down. It's understandable, if you want the back story it's out there. Anyways, they've played shows here and there since the hiatus but this was the first real time I set out to tape them. I wish I would have taped the 10th anniversary sets at the Turf Club.

"Heiruspecs" is the 4th official LP from Heiruspecs and the first since 2004's "A Tiger Dancing." I'm extremely happy these guys are back full time and I'm grateful that Sean in particular was cool about this show being taped. In my top 3 shows of 2008? Yes. A huge thank you goes out to both Heiruspecs and First Avenue for making this recording possible. Big Quarters and Mayda opened. Please support your favorite local bands, whoever they are.

I was in hustle mode all afternoon to get this out to the fine fans of Amanda Palmer. I'm heading back to First Ave tonight to tape another show...

Many people are to be thanked for this recording's existence. Join me in thanking Katie, Mary, Sean and of course Amanda for starters. A huge thanks also goes to First Avenue for permitting audio/video documentation when the artist's/band's policy allows. Having taped the Dresden Dolls 2006 stop at First Avenue this show went on my calendar as soon as I saw it booked. It was an amazing night of music and performance art. I'm also very happy with the recording. I do suggest that you crank it. There are some "quieter" songs and I didn't want to use compression on the recording. Beware of clinking beer bottles as they hit the bin. I ran the mics high in anticipation of this, there are a few but it in no way detracts from the tape.

Please support Amanda's (and the Dresden Dolls) official releases.

The opening sets: They were great to say the least. Unfortunately Zoe is incomplete. I was given the green light by Amanda's camp (thank you) to enter the venue pre-doors around 7:30 to set up. I got there at 7:40, talked with a staff member at the front door about permission to set up early. He went to check, came back, told me it was cool and to go in through the side door. I was immediately stopped, made brief mention of my situation and was told I "had to wait in line like everyone else." No problem, being happy to tape at all and not waiting to create problems for anyone I went back outside. I tape at First Ave a good bit and don't want to become known as that guy who thinks he deserves special privileges. I got in around 8:20 thinking I was good since the opener usually goes on around 9. Zoe went on at 8:30 and I spent the majority of her set setting up. Some songs were recorded. The Builders and the Butchers set is complete and it sounds great.

What's up Chip.

# w/ Judgement Day (Anton on Violin & Lewis on Cello)

Gavin Hayes - Vocals / Slide Guitar / Guitar
Drew Roulette - Bass / Samples
Mark Engles - Guitar
Dino Campanella - Drums / Piano

www.dredg.com | www.myspace.com/dredg

The new album is being released 03/29/08. Thanks to both dredg and the Varsity Theater for being cool with taping.

Gavin had mic/mic cable issues in places but other than that the show sounded great and the tape is very solid.

Pretty standard set for the second half of the tour. Earlier in the tour some sets also included "Catch Without Arms" as well as unreleased songs such as "Waterborne," "I Don't Know" and "It's Not Worth It." Thanks to JRundquist a pic of Mark's set list is included. I'm curious what "Shark Nap" is.

Please support dredg and buy the official releases.

Sector 7G, Kristoff Krane & Abzorbr opened Eyedea & Abilities first hometown show in 5 years.

This show was packed and just plain crazy. I got there a little past 9pm and the line was down the block towards Snelling. I haven't seen anything like it at the Turf Club since the July 07 Doomtree show. This show was lots of fun from time Secto7G went on until 2AM came around. Lots of intoxication. Lots of mic stand protection.

THE NEW EYEDEA & ABILITIES RECORD IS DONE. The new Abzorbr material sounds great. Don't miss the exclusive dial_system jam either.

3PM in-store got started around 3:30 because Jesse was attacked by ninjas on the way. He had to kill them all and defend a woman's honor.

Being roughly 10 feet in front of Jesse this is a pretty nice sounding tape. You really feel like you are there. I was not able to attend the Fine Line show later that evening.

Support The Eagles of Death Metal on tour Fall 08. Many thanks to them for being cool with taping. Thanks to the Electric Fetus and staff as well.

This is the 2nd ever live performance by No Bird Sing, a band that includes members of Hyder Ali and Abzorbr. Many other bands could be listed. Basically these are some talented fellas involved in many different local bands. Casey is not a full time member. The whole set is sick but "Legal Blood Money" is worth your bandwidth alone, which is not available anywhere else. They're working on an EP that may be released in early 09.

I was in the mood to travel light, only bringing a h120 & cable to get a board patch. The house engineer was kind enough to bust his mics out. Thank you B.

Not that it really matters but I skipped Minus the Bear + Annuals + Themes at the Varsity Theater to catch this set and I'm glad I did.

This is a good time for this tape to surface. This was the first of four dates in a short Midwest run with Attention opening for Jonah and then coming back out for a set of Gratitude songs. Unfortunately Jeremy's mother passed away after Chicago. Jonah played Cleveland and Detroit by himself.

So this guy Jonah was in the band FAR from 91-98. Officially went "solo" in 99. He formed New End Original with a different bunch of fellas from 2000-2002. "Gratitude was formed in 2000 by Mark Weinberg (Crumb) and Thomas Becker. Initially called the Collision, the band was joined by Bob Lindsey on bass and Robbie Cronholm (Crumb) on vocals." After touring with New End Original in 02 Jonah took over on vocals. "Gratitude released a statement on November 25, 2005 claiming that they had in fact decided to split after playing one final show at the Ascot Room in Minneapolis two days earlier."

As of October 08 FAR have been playing shows again which is exciting. Jonah has been one of my favorite musicians for over 10 years now. Purchase a cd or a show ticket if you're not familiar with his doings.

Check out Jonah, check out Attention, check out Little Hot Pony.
