Roma di Luna Release Third LP: Then the Morning Came

On Saturday October 2nd Roma di Luna will release Then the Morning Came in the Mainroom at First Avenue.

"Mythologist Joseph Campbell once wrote, “Love is a friendship set to music.” For Alexei & Channy Casselle, husband and wife who began playing as Roma di Luna five years ago, that love is too big not to share. What started as a simple yet profound folk-singing duo on the 2006 EP Face of My Friends and 2007's Find Your Way Home began to develop as a band on 2008’s Casting the Bones. Now with full-time band members in the dynamic rhythm section of Ben Durrant, James Everest and Ryan Lovan, as well as vocalist Jessi Prusha, Roma di Luna has come into it’s own on the forthcoming full-length Then The Morning Came."

"Then The Morning Came weaves together influences of roots, bluegrass, gospel, psychedelia and soul, arrangements the band members brought to the structures supplied by Channy & Alexei. Channy's evocative voice remains front and center, surrounded by a magnificent array of sounds and textures inspired by the collaborative and adventurous approach the whole band took to producing the album. Recorded from April of 2009 to July 2010 at Crazy Beast Studio (Dosh, Andrew Bird) the process of Then The Morning Came was surrounded by births and deaths, often beset by a chaos and confusion that almost stopped the music-making altogether. Rising from challenges, the new life of the four babies who were born to the band members during recording was a source of comfort and strength. Channy wrote of the time, “Most of these songs were written and recorded with my newborn daughter in my arms. They are a reflection of the life and death surrounding her first year on this earth, the love and the madness I found in myself and the friendship of all my fears.” In that compass of Roma di Luna’s personal joys and struggles they made a record that builds on the traditions of the band and the cornerstones of American music, but contains its own entrancing power that is wholly and passionately their own."

So hopefully when I get back from work today my ISP will have come though. It's been kind of a nice break but thank you for checking back. In case you haven't heard the Marijuana Deathsquads set and screening of Fargo as part of the "4 Nights in Loring" series has been postponed to Tuesday August 31st due to the torrential rains last night. City on the Make did play Nick & Eddie last night. I hope everyone had a great time. Unfortunately this guy doesn't believe in automobiles and gear or no gear I didn't have the sand to walk a half dozen city blocks through that craziness.

This heat is death so it's a good thing there will be plenty of shade provided by Loring Park and Nick & Eddie tomorrow. At 7pm a sonic cleansing will rain down onto 55403 thanks to the MDS crew. Afterwords those in attendance will be treated to a screening of the Coen Brothers' Fargo. The afterparty place to be is across the street at Nick and Eddie for the Southside's City on the Make. These gentlemen come highly recommended so be sure to catch their N & E debut. It's going to be a long night and I hope I see you there. Marching Band + The Craziest Show Ever: Tonight At 1419 Space

"Jackie from Brute Heart is organizing a marching band to play during a parade from Riverside park to Curry Park (by The Bedlam) at 9pm. There will be stilt walkers, glow stick capes, and critical fierceness. Parade lands around 10pm in curry park and then people will migrate to the 1419 space (1419 washington ave across the street from the southern theater) and music begins at 11pm.

"Offline" For A Week.

I'm just about done moving and will not have net access at the new place until hopefully this Saturday 8/7. Will try to get some recordings get posted Saturday or Sunday. After a couple of different residences over the course of 5 plus years I'm a bit sad to be leaving the lovely Longfellow neighborhood. Things should work out just fine though because I didn't realize how many pals I had in the Lyndale neighborhood until I moved there. See you down the road Longfellow, you were always the best.

I got a call from Mr. Miller about stopping down to NPRS this week. Therefore hitting the Art of This show tonight is still up in the air. Unfortunately I won't make it to Communist Daughter in Loring Park or the 2nd Annual National Night Out Block Party House Show Extravaganza.

"Jacob Felix Heule is a drummer and electronic musician whose music directly expresses sonic texture and timbre through the discipline of free improvisation. Spanning extremes of physicality and intensity, stasis and restraint, his music follows from the traditions of electro-acoustic improv and noise.

In 2004 he founded the acoustic grind duo, Ettrick, with both members playing both drums and saxophones in a style often described as a hybrid of free jazz and black metal.

Heule has worked extensively with double bassist Tony Dryer since 2006, exploring heavy electronics as Basshaters since 2008. Their textural acoustic improv trio with clarinetist Jacob Lindsay released its debut album, Idea of West, on Creative Sources in 2008. Heule and Dryer also have a trio CD with saxophonist Jack Wright, and have performed live with diverse musicians such as Michel Doneda, C Spencer Yeh, Gino Robair, and Damon Smith."

Bird Sounds, Puppies & Trains and Voytek supported the Double Bird tour kickoff show. It was a fine evening of musics at The Turf Club and this is one of my all time favorite fliers. Puppys And Trains...Killing You Softly.

Puppies and Trains are one of the greatest Rock n' Roll bands in the in the seven county metro area. Probably kind of surprised you haven't seen them around town? Well, they don't really believe in "websites" and "promotion" and "social networking" et cetera. Puppies and Trains is Kermit and Math P. from Superhopper along with Drummer Jimmy. This was the Double Bird tour kick off show which also featured top-shelf sets from Bird Sounds and Voytek. Jam city with the AKG 414's in the spot at The Turf Club (07/22/10).

Once I get moved I'd like to start offering FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) sets on The Traders'Den again. 320kbps mp3 sets will still be available. I started seeding shows there in 2004. Basically, FLAC is tops and iPods are lame. If you're down with the file size I think you can probably even play FLAC on iPods now? After missing the 2005(?) show with Lucero I made sure I caught Langhorne Slim a few times at The Triple Rock between 2006 and 2007. Then his agent started booking at The 400. For fear of being scolded for trying to record at The 400 I stayed home missing what I'm sure were great shows. I got way excited for The Varsity show and it went on the calendar immediately. Unfortunately after hemorrhaging a good amount of cash and sleep on this last 5 night run I think I'll be sitting this one out. Joel, where you at old friend? Please tell me you'll make it out. You remember the 05/28/06 gig with Slim, Metal Hearts and Murder by Death? Ha Ha Tonka sure did bring it last May...here's that recording.

No One Told Me Desaparecidos Were REUNITING...

$610 for a flight down to Omaha on Saturday returning on Sunday? I'm gutted! Apparently this was announced on July 6th. I'm sure plane tickets could have been had for cheaper 20 days ago. For more information on the Desaparecidos reunion you can check the facespace. It is SOLD OUT. I guess spending a ton of money to record an outdoors show would likely end up in disappointment anyways. I must say that it is for a good cause though. If this was going on indoors at The Slowdown I might just have to sell an organ.

Come out and support the Concert for Equality. All proceeds go to the ACLU Nebraska's effort to repeal Fremont's Anti-Immigrant Law. We finally have the details for this show worked out. Music is now starting both inside and outside at 5pm. The regular tickets can get you into both places (unless The Waiting Room is over capacity) until 10pm. At 10pm, about the time Desapare...cidos play outside, we will clear out The Waiting Room. After the outside show is done at 11pm, those with the deluxe tickets will be allowed back in to The Waiting Room for more performances.
