Freestyle meets free jazz and now that I have permission to release whatever I want it's time to kick out the jams. Face Candy shows are always an experience because you never know who's going to be on stage or what you're going to get. I thought about doing a two disc compilation with the best tracks from six or so shows but realized people would probably prefer full sets. Since we're talking improv all of the song titles are made up.
In 2006 Rhymesayers released Face Candy's first and only album "This Is Where We Were." It's a live album comprised of recordings made during an 8 date Midwest tour. The line up for the album included Eyedea (vocals), Mazta I (vocals), Kristoff Krane (vocals), Carnage (vocals), JT Bates (drums) and Casey O' Brien (bass). Face Candy have since continued playing shows in MN/WI as a trio featuring Eyedea, Casey and JT. With that said, Chris has always been a member and he's joined them for at least half of if not all of the set at 95% of the shows I've seen. I've also seen two shows that brought Carnage back to the fold to provide percussion in JT's absence.
Michael, Casey and JT are also in Carbon Carousel. Chris and Casey are also in Abzorbr. JT is in a dozen bands at any given time and I'd have to say he's my favorite Twin Cities drummer. Check out Carnage's solo material or anything he's done in Ill Chemistry.
The next Face Candy release is going to be a studio album culled from a non-stop 48 hour recording session that has yet to go down.

Super tight and super sick indie rock from St. Paul, MN. You need to check these guys out. This show was with City on the Make and The Tender Sweaters.
"Mike Ries, Mike Coyne, and Chris Tures started playing together in 2005 and were joined shortly after by Dan Ries.
They are currently working on their second full-length album, tentatively due to be self-released in summer of 2008. Their first album, "This Way To Gunshire..." is considered to be an underground classic; so far underground in fact, that all proof of this claim has melted, given the proximity to the center of the earth. Not any old album, but the first in a trilogy - or "thrillogy.""

...and with that a short break.
I'm actually looking forward to laying low until the 27th but unfortunately these two shows are on the same night. I've been meaning to hit some shows at Eclipse since they started booking again but Dosh has been on the calendar for a long time. Might try cabbing it to First Avenue but would have to leave immediately after City on the Make...pretty bummed since I really like all 3 bands. Living where we live this predicament happens often but I guess it's not a bad problem to have.

I hope a 14 hour turn around time isn't to long to wait. Out of a half dozen this was hands down the best City on the Make show I've seen. Granted, I can't speak for the shows in 2006 but this band only continues to get tighter and tighter. When you come out you can expect to never be bored or see the same thing twice and in my opinion that's going to keep the people coming out. Thank you to the 400 Bar for being cool with the recording of this show and to Ron for the stellar mix. All 3 sets sounded great. Be sure to check out Dragons Power Up and The Tender Sweaters as well.

A reseed request was made by someone who actively posts many popular torrents on TTD. I've checked out several of them myself so of course I was happy to fill the request. I always really enjoyed this recording so it will be fun to get it out to a new wave of people, especially since new Dresden Dolls sets have been recently circulated.
Other than minor tweaks to the format of the .txt file this is the same exact file set that I originally seeded on 10-26-06.

I love taping at the Cedar because the recordings always sound so nice. I did boost the levels on this. I ran them conservative to prevent the applause from clipping. Great bill all around with Jeremy Messersmith and Roma di Luna open. Please check out The Pines music and purchase a disc if you dig it. This show was also taped by my friend Dave Kunath (Nak CM1000/CP101).

What a great great show. Amazing set, closing with the Survivor cover blew me away...there was an insane amount of energy in the room. I encourage you to purchase SWSC's and FKW's discs if you ever run across them.
Thanks to all of the bands and to the Cedar for being cool with taping. This show was also taped by my friend Dean Lambrecht (AKG C 414b). Thanks for letting me fly the HOs Dean!

List of torrents Part II...
Registration at The Traders' Den is free. As with signing up to any other message board it takes 30 seconds but this one has lots of hot live recordings (which are also free). What's with torrent's? You download the .torrent file at the bottom of a post to you computer and open it in a "torrent client." After torrenting for 5 years (yeah I'm kind of a dork like that) I'm sticking with utorrent because it's great.
The post here covers November 2004 to December 2007.

An extremely accurate and fun review of the show.
A great article from Reveillemag.com
I've been taping & torrenting shows since Jan. 2004 and a large part of that has been making an effort to put the word out on local music that I believe in. When someone from Moscow says thanks for posting the latest A Whisper in the Noise show you keep going because it's something that you really care about doing. Some of you that have grabbed past torrents may be familar with lines such as "______ is a great band from the Twin Cities..." or "______ is one of my favorite Minneapolis bands." Well, I'm going on the record. City on the Make is my favorite Minneapolis band. To be honest I didn't know who they were prior to May '06. I had been popping into the Nomad every Thursday night to tape Abzorbr's May residency. After staggering up the basement stairs my face was melted (OK, not really) by a fusion of Blues & Rock & Punk & lots of other words that people use to find tidy places to put music. Yeah, I know other people have rocked similar formats but there is something else going on here folks, trust me. Would I ever lead you astray?
I'm really not a fan of how most bands sound coming out of a murdochspace player...especially if you have crappy pc speakers like mine. So I guess in the end, the LP "In the Name of Progress" & EP "$1,000,000" both sound great pulsating through a home/car stereo but don't base your decision to download this or future shows off of a couple quick 96kbps mp3 listens.
Much respect to Stacy for making it through Law School and inviting everyone to her party. Check out her amazing concert photography here.

Gospel Gossip are from Northfield, MN, 45 minutes south of the Twin Cities. I dig them a lot and you should check them out. They are a young band that have been around since sometime in '07 as far as I know...I plan on taping them more this summer.
This set was part of the "City Pages Best of the Twin Cities 08 Celebration" which also featured sets from Romantica, The Alarmists and the mighty Doomtree. Here's to no cover. Thanks City Pages! Tracks 1 & 5 can be found on their debut LP "Sing into My Mouth." The rest of the set is comprised of unreleased material. Great songs. Track 6 clocks in at an epic 12+ minutes. Hopefully it's tracked properly.
"Sing into My Mouth" was released by Guilt Ridden Pop, home to a host of talented Twin Cities bands including; Malachi Constant (RIP, kinda), Mark Mallman, Superhopper, Volante, Maps Of Norway, Baby Guts and many others.
Sound at the legendary First Avenue never disappoints and it's always a real treat to tape there. Much respect to them for being cool with the documentation of the great shows that get booked (www.first-avenue.com).

Good time at First Avenue last night. Taped all 4 bands. I'm going to try and get the full Gospel Gossip set out soon. I cannot circulate any unreleased Doomtree so I was thinking of also torrenting a compilation that would feature tracks from the Doomtree set that have already been released as well as tracks from the other sets.

This was the after party for Louis N. Lapierre's art show opening (555 Studios on 39th and Minnehaha for the next month). A five band bill that was running late resulted in short sets but it was still a great show. Face Candy (also featuring Chris & Casey) and City on the Make played later in the evening. I love the Hexagon but let it be noted that it's a chatty neighborhood joint from back in the day. No cover also means a lot of traffic but the music is full enough to mask much of the chattiness.

There is a pleasant amount of crowd banter that adds to the recording, including the "official dude of the show" who got shirtless a couple of times.

Many thanks to Dark Meat & Bernard for being cool with taping. I think it's going to pay off for them in the end because these shows and their energy need to be documented for others to hear, be it now or 20 years from now. This is a listing of the band members however; I believe only 12 of them are on tour. This information also denotes more of what they contributed on the album but should be pretty faithful to the live show as well. I can't say for fact who did what in Minneapolis but it was amazing. I had serious doubts about what they would be able to pull off in a small venue (with a TINY stage) like the Nomad but doubts were quickly laid to rest. They sounded better than a lot of the 4 piece rock bands I've seen at the Nomad and this is likely due to their sound engineer Bernard. Bernard is known to some as One Man Machine. He has short opening set prior to Dark Meat coming on. Check out his album "Get My Sound."

On tour with his wife Kimya Dawson and L'Orchidee D'Hawai. Not much information is out there on Angelo but he is from the French Alps and now lives in Olympia, WA. At times I found myself verifying that there was only one person on stage when there could have easily been several. I definitely plan on attending the next Twin Cities show if at all possible.
Drop Angelo an email about purchasing some music if you'd like: angelospencer AT gmail.com

L'Orchidee D'Hawai are from Chambéry, Rhône-Alpes France. They are currently on tour with Angelo Spencer and his wife Kimya Dawson. What an amazing set this was, I highly recommend you catch the rest of the tour if possible! All 3 sets were great and really well received here in Minneapolis. Go on and treat yourself to a stellar fusion of European surf rock featuring songs in English, Polish and Italian. Many thanks to Piotr for his help with the set list. Several of these songs appear on L'Orchidee D'Hawai's latest album "Nobody Beats Me" while some are available on their first album "Gold." This set also features some unreleased songs as well.

Triple Rock > Bedlam > Triple Rock
I had been excited to tape Fuck Buttons for a long time. Met up with my bud and fellow taper, Guy at the Triple Rock. I've heard great things about Caribou's live show so we were looking forward to making some sweet tapes. We were both clamped to the same stand when Fuck Buttons merch guy came up and very politely told us that per their management he was not to allow anyone to record any of the shows on this tour. He was very cool about it, explaining that they were playing songs the label had not heard yet and their management wanted to prevent the songs from leaking. I suppose we could have given the old "we'll give the band copies and then just keep the recordings to ourselves" argument but I wasn't in the mood to go there.
Knowing that Caribou was covered my original plan was to tape FB and then head to the Bedlam Theatre to tape Mel Gibson & the Pants. I stayed and checked out most of FB's set but because I was already all packed up and ready to go I ducked out before they finished. Short story short I made a really nice recording of MG&TP then headed back to the Triple Rock in time to catch the last 2-3 Caribou songs. They sounded very tight and it's a good thing Guy was rolling on them.
I ran into one of the Fuck buttons guys and just mentioned that "it's a bummer we couldn't record your set but we fully understand the label concerns so no worries at all." He was a bit confused so I just explained that we were asked to to record per the management. He had verified that it was due to the two new songs that were in the set and was a bit apologetic about the whole deal. "Just as long as you don't think we're assholes." I assured him that wasn't the case at all and thanked him for coming through.

Here's to the tough guy that slammed into a friend filming beside me over what he thought was an abandoned beer on the drink rail. After a polite elbow to chill out I handed over the empty root beer bottle in an effort to keep him off the recording. He dropped it on the ground and proceded to text on his phone, yelling out the occasional Bro comment. Thankfully you can only hear the jackass a couple of times. FUCKING JESUIT! WE WANT NATE! ...oh man texting at shows is so cool. I wanted to ask why he felt the need to drink other peoples beverages but he wasn't around after the show. Bro, drinking strange beverages can be bad for you.

City on the Make @ The Bedlam Theatre
I heard great things from a couple of friends about City on the Make's set opening for the Black Diamond Heavies at the 400 Bar Friday night. Those who were at the Bedlam last night were treated to another set full of heart and rock by the band. They played the after-party for the second night of Idigaragua and Massgraves, two memorizing productions being put on by local theatre company A Lamb Lays With Lion. Check out both of these shows! The schedule is posted below. Even if you are not able to attend these particular productions please be sure to stop by The Bedlam Theatre and show them your support. It is a valuable establishment.
I'm going to hold off on posting a torrent of the City on the Make set until I talk to them some more. Keep an eye on their page for info on the soon to be released new EP.

A LAMB LAYS WITH LION PRODUCTION
THE ENCORE PRESENTATION OF
FORT WILSON RIOT PRESENTS: IDIGARAGUA
IN REPERTORY WITH
MASSGRAVES
Directed by Jeremey Catterton
April 3-13, 2008 (Opening April 4)
Fort Wilson Riot Presents: Idigaragua premiered at the Bedlam Theatre to great critical acclaim and sold out crowds in September of 2007. Conceived by local art-rock band Fort Wilson Riot and directed by Jeremey Catterton, Idigaragua features dance, puppetry, film and live rock 'n' roll to fully visualize their concept album of the same title. A five-part epic, Idigaragua relates a magical tale of one man's lifetime, from the mundane to the fantastic. It speaks of intention, possibility, and choice, while all along accompanied by a mystical bird and its song, "Idigaragua . . . " Idigaragua was voted "Best Rock Opera" by MSP Magazine in 2007.
"Massgraves…is a lot of bodies…or the end of religion... or possibly the mourning of our weak wrecked planet, as we gift it unto our children. Massgraves is the story of how to properly put to bed everything we hold dear. It is how we say goodbye to all that was good about life and striving. The Requiem for all that we did not do, or simply the Prayer for all that we still hope to happen…which keeps us living. Massgraves is a hiphop-beat ridden vision that peers through the art of performance to tell us the story of ourselves in a city, Nosferatu on the floor in a heap, and The Egyptian Book of the Dead in our sleep," from writer/director Jeremey Catterton. Massgraves will feature live original music by Kill the Vultures.

Check this band out! Great 50 minute set opening for the Paper Chase. Be sure to support these fine fellas, especially if you live in the Twin Cities area.
Iced Ink is/are/am an instrumental surf-jazz-metal guitar - drum - bass - percussion group that are slowly emerging from the snowy bowels of Minneapolis, MN. It spawned in 1998 when Mike (guitar) abandoned all contact with outside musicians for a few years to focus on writing music he wished he was hearing more of in the Twin Cities area that couldn't necessarily be written by just "jamming".
Let's move ahead to July of 2001: Freshly transplanted to the Twin Cities from that one famous music school in Boston full of gifted wankers, VomitGod (drums) along with his wifeperson Sara T. (percussion) were lured in by shameless Iced Ink promotional bait printed on the back of Minneapolis' premier weekly alternative news source, City Pages. He contacted Mike, and 6 months later, Joe Berkman's skillful (and very audible) bass manipulations won the Iced Ink Bassist Pageant to complete the lineup. They bought a colorful bus, were driven around by their mother and manager Reuben to perform to the delight of many screaming fans, and compelled families across the world to tune in every week for a half hour of pure watery comedy and bad lip-synching.
In the spring of 2005, VomitGod and Scara moved back out East which caused Berkman and Mike to search high and low for replacement drums/percussion. Iced Ink fan and CEO of HighTide Music Doug Kasper was kind enough to refer a lovely and talented drummer to them by the name of Barry Knudson. Barry proved to be an eggsellent fit for the band and they are now playing as a boner feed power trio.
In closing, if you obtain a copy of our CD "There's A Bee In Here", "ALIVE!", and/or come out to see us live, you may find yourself wondering: "How come nobody told me weird music that people can't dance or sing to could be this totally bitchin?!!"
The answer, my friends, is ketchup.

Crescent Moon is in Big Trouble
That sickness that everyone has had finally caught up to me. Kicked my ass. Still kicking it. I missed the EP release at the BLB. Never been to the Theater part of the BLB. Word is it holds 75 and to get a good recording you either need to be on-stage or get their early enough to get permission to clamp to the projector. I didn't a clamp or the motivation to drag my sick ass down there. Heard it was great. Pick up the EP if you see it out and about.
I'm going to head down to the Turf Club for Kill the Vultures, Painted Saints and American Catastrophe and Alexei better have my copy or I'm coughing on him.

This is a really great set from Humanboy that opened the A Whisper in the Noise "Dry Land" US CD Release. All 4 of these people bring something to the table that makes me want to see this band again. I really don't think you'll be disappointed after giving this a quick download. I have a really nice Audience recording I'll post as well. To be honest, I'm only familiar with the tracks on myspace (check 'em out) so I was hoping Ben would help with the setlist! I hope you enjoy some Humanboy.

So there are numerous extremely talented jazz trios in Minneapolis but FKW are by far my favorite. Add together all of the other bands and artists that these guys are in or gig with and you'd have an intertwining tree of at least another 20 other active bands. Don't let this set fool you either, they have plenty of original material to check out.
See also; Happy Apple, Alpha Consumer, Carbon Carousel, Face Candy, Slide Huxtable, James Buckley Trio, The Pines, Dosh, Fog, Dubsack, Gloryland PonyCat and Kelly Rossum Quartet to name a few.

"Enemy Entropist was founded in 2004 by Minneapolis MC's Optix & Cadaver, who were/are members of MNeapolis Junction. The motivation was to explore the stylistic and lyrical capabilities of the two as a duo, and to shine a spotlight on Cadaver's perpetually growing prowess as a producer. Fellow Junction member Asei MT joined up to add his flavorful cuts as well as production, to the Lake of Fire sessions and perform DJ duties at shows. He has also began upping his game as an MC on various ENTROPIST tracks. The group has a solid self-made debut album plus several unreleased tracks in the bag, as well as a hand full of recent new tracks in one form of creation or another. The style is underground and lyrically-complex, more or less pondering on the dark and intense vibe of the rap spectrum. As with all Brainstem projects, production is highly valued and the beats demand your appreciation. The live show is energetic and executed with precision. These guys have known and been working together for several years, and it shows."
