Meant to get this out sooner but I was stumped on the newer song titles. The band is cool with this recording being shared. Please support them by picking up the official releases. Check out Guilt Ridden Pop for more information on Gospel Gossip and other top notch Twin Cities bands.

Staying busy is good for your mental health.

Caught some of the One Day in July festival and it was a great time. Valuable information shot out of the PA. I may post some of the speeches and a couple tracks for the City on the Make set.

We hit the West Bank for DJ Turtleneck's monthly Live at the BBQ @ The Nomad. This month's BBQ was hosted by I Self Devine. Good friends and good food mean everything on a nice Saturday afternoon. Don't miss the final installment on 8/29 which will be hosted by Muja Messiah.

OK then, it's time to check out the new Uptown venue Sauce Spirits & Soundbar. Someone has to see if there's an unobtrusive spot for a mic stand. Word is it's a small place so I'm doubtful but they have a calendar that's already stacked with solid shows regardless. Looking forward to seeing The Millionth Word again. MC/VL and Count Vesuvius. 9:30 doors & $5 cover.

Stop back mañana for some live mp3s...

One Day In July...

Going to hop the train to check out some of the One Day In July Street Festival.

Brother Ali featuring BK One, Guante & Big Cats!, Mic Crenshaw, The Brass Kings, Ellis, 2 Tone Runts, City on the Make and Best Bitch in Show are all throwing down to make sure people don't forget.

This was a rare performance by Crescent Moon is in Big Trouble. Maybe their second this year? Maybe their sixth ever? You try not to miss these if at all possible but sometimes it happens. Well, if they had to listen to one in 2067 I'd like for it to be this one because the quality is sassy. The performance and the sonics are tops. The BBQ Chicken Po-Boy was delicious as usual. Look for their EP on emusic or other fine online stores and independent record shops.

WHY? returning to Minneapolis...

Back in early '08 I heard whispers from a buddy in California about catching Why? at the Entry with Heiruspecs & Gospel Gossip. Looking back it was smashed in between Converge @ the Triple Rock and City on the Make @ the Bedlam. Despite having two of my favorite local bands on the bill I skipped the show and it's been something that has deeply pained me lately. Lucky for all of us Schedule Two was there to document the set.

Props to solace for the Triple Rock heads up last night. I starting digging around for dates and located them on The Tape. Check out their site for the press release and more information on the new album "Eskimo Snow" due out September 22nd on Anticon.

I kept this one on the shelf because of the five unreleased songs that were played. Out of respect for the band these songs will not be made available for download. This post is unique in that it's the first time I've offered hi-res mp3s for direct download instead of .flac files via a pesky torrent hosted on another site.

More hi-res mp3 downloads of other shows to come. Keep an eye on the "mp3 series" tag.

Bella Koshka - "Fiction" Live @ The Beat

Due to a lot of the material played being unreleased I didn't want to post the full recording. You can still check out a hi-res mp3 of "Fiction" here.

Saturday December 27th 2008

In anticipation of the party being thrown by millcityscene.com this Thursday at the Barfly I present this direct download (no messing with torrents). On the bill are El Guante with Big Cats!, Kredentials, Hy-C Tha Image and Simply Us with DJ Swee2th.

This is the same recording that was offered via torrent here. If you're not familiar with extracting files from a .RAR I use WinRAR which is available here. If you need help converting .flac to .wav or .mp3 check out FLAC Frontend. There are PC, Mac and Linux versions available. Traders' Little Helper is also a good FLAC converter. I want you to hear the best possible quality, that's why I'm a fan of FLAC. MP3 downloads are on the way though.

Bella Koshka @ The Beat (AA)

Rewind to May 23rd...after catching City on the Make at the Memory Lanes block party I went over to the Triple Rock for Big Quarter's CD Release show. The early show was still in progress when I started setting up. I was able to catch the last 2-3 songs from Bella Koshka's set. Yeah, at that point I knew I was going to have to tape this band soon. Good thing they have a show at the Beat Coffee House this Thursday. Haven't been to the Beat for a show since October 2007 (Empires, Portrait of a Drowned Man, Sleeping in Gethsemane & Ladyslipper) which is unfortunate because I really like the place. It's all about the French Press.

Don't miss out on this great show at a very underrated venue...

Crescent Moon is in Big Trouble...

Lots of stuff goin' down on the West Bank Saturday night but someone needs to make sure the show at the Triple Rock gets taped. I've nominated myself. I'm honestly not familiar with The Teddy Holidays but I'm looking forward to checking them out. What got my attention immediately was the fact that Crescent Moon is in Big Trouble and No Bird Sing will be sharing the same bill. 9pm doors with a $6 cover. That's a steal to see these bands.

This Weekend @ The 501 Club

I know lots of folks will be at the Basilica Block Party for The Jayhawks, The Black Crowes & more or Frank Black at the Triple Rock this evening. Too bad Frank isn't down with open taping. Well regardless, Lookbook is headlining the 501 Club tonight and that's the show I had my eye on. While Saturday is another solid night at the Basilica (Tapes 'n Tapes, The Hold Steady, Counting Crows & more), 501 hosts another no joke headliner with A Whisper in the Noise on the bill. It could be a 501 weekend.

Thanks to Bender, the band and Station 4 for being cool with taping. Good seeing Mike again. The venue was like a brick sweat house. It had to have been over 100 degrees in there. mwY played Station 4 last June and ended the set short due to heat concerns. Heat or no heat they brought a 75 minute set that would rival any of the previous four shows I've seen as the best. We don't agree on all theological points but they will go down as one of my all time favorite bands nonetheless. Please support them by buying the official releases.

Some light fireworks, others tape shows

Caught Jason Lytle de Grandaddy, Ice Palace and Andy Ulseth at the Triple Rock last night. Tonight is mewithoutYou, The Deer Hunter and Kay Kay & His Weathered Underground at Station 4. Word on the street is this is the last mewithoutYou tour.

Friday night City on the Make bring a TWO hour plus set to the 400 Bar for the release of "Keep This on Fire." A free copy of the new album is included with each admission. Head over to cityonthemake.net to stream that action in it's entirety. Crunkmonster will be in the house to keep the party running smooth.

Gospel Gossip CD Release

Last Friday June 26th Gospel Gossip had the release party for their new album "Dreamland" at the Turf Club. The album is out on Guilt Ridden Pop. Lookbook, Black Horse (Brooklyn) and Mute Era all killed opening sets. All four of these bands are worth checking out. I was lured to Crunkmonster's BBQ at the Nomad the following day and took it easy Sunday so no torrenting was done. Keep an eye out for torrents.

This was a party thrown by the Hot Pants DJs. If you don't know these fellows you should probably swing down to Clubhouse Jager every 2nd Saturday of the month for some of the best Funk, Soul & Blues records in town. JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound out of Chicago and the Southside's own City on the Make were also on the bill. This was an ill set from The CapTones. If you're into that Funky Soul and R&B do not pass this one by. Some folks may have caught the 9/12/08 400 Bar tape...well it's time to add another to your collection.

Many thanks to the Nomad for allowing us usage of their grills both last Saturday and last night.

Rivertown Shakedown

The Hot Pants DJs who regularly throw parties at Club Jager organzied a fine party at the Nomad this past Saturday. Grill master Massey made sure no one went hungry. The evening featured performances by Twin Cities own The Capitol City Soul-Tones, Chicago based JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound as well as knock down drag out closing by City on the Make. City on the Make will be releasing their new LP on July 3rd at the 400 Bar.

E&A and ISIS

I got a last minute call from a Rhymesayers contact Saturday afternoon about covering audio for the sneak preview of the new Eyedea & Abilities album. Being a supporter of E&A and local record labels I was on it. The event was held at Intermediate Arts in South Minneapolis.

The new Eyedea & Abilities album "By the Throat" is due out 07/21/09 on RSE.

Got to the Triple Rock in time to find out that ISIS no longer supports open taping. Still a great set nonetheless, probably the best ISIS set I've seen in 3-4 shows.

Live tapes help sell studio tapes?

"Thanks, I've been listening to nothing, but Minnesota hip hop since my ordered cds arrived, last week. Pretty much every act you've put up here."

- TTD user from Germany on the recent BQ CD Release Party torrent

I started taping in '04 so I would have my own recordings to listen to but sometime in '06 I started to realize people were buying the official releases. The Traders' Den has a large population of users from all over the world. The fact that what I do in some small way helps expose others to MN bands makes me want to keep taping.

Now when I get into this it's not because I'm trying to get all cocky. If you know me you know I'm a pretty humble person. I'm just putting it out there for musicians that are sketched out by taping. I realize what I do is super tiny when compared to grand scheme of things. I could name over a dozen Twin Cities bands but it doesn't matter who they are. Granted maybe that's only 50 albums total but hopefully whoever is buying the albums outside of Minnesota are playing them for friends etc.

Alright I went out to Philly for a week but I'm back and it's time to put this out. I decided to split this into two different torrents and offer the opening sets first. It also made sense to split it at the Kill the Vultures set but burn it in any order you want. The levels start out a little hot on Alissa's set but nothing that causes crazy distortion during playback. Big Quarters, Alissa Paris, Kill the Vultures, P.O.S., Big Zach, Mankwe Ndosi and Toki Wright all have official releases available to buy online now or in the near future. If you're into anything you hear on this recording please head to the appropriate pages and check into that. Many of these releases can be ordered directly from the artists themselves, fifthelementonline.com or itunes. Big Zach of Kanser hosted the evening.

Four shows in Four nights

...but little taping was done. The 501 has really nice sound for it's size and layout. Went to Trocaderos for the first time in a LONG time to see Sims Saturday night. I grabbed a sbd but will not be putting it online. Sunday night I hit the Turf with Jav to catch his band along with Charlie Parr's first return since touring overseas. I was asked to shoot video of the Javier Trejo set but DK ran audio for the whole night. It's honestly been kind of nice to get out without having to haul a bunch of gear around. Laying low until ISIS.

I also wanted to get the sets from Big Quarter's CD Release posted this past Saturday but I was having issues with the torrent site. Keep an eye out for those if you're interested.

Friday, June 05, 2009

I'm still alive...

Caught No Bird Sing at the 501 Club last night but the only taping I did was video on Bobby's digital camera. Please keep an eye out for their album in the Fall. The mighty Mel Gibson & the Pants headlined but I caught an earily train back South.

Going back to the 501 tonight but only to hang with friends. I might be motivated enough to tape off the board but won't be hauling gear down. Gay Witch Abortion, Marijuana Deathsquads (members of Building Better Bombs) and Total Fucking Blood are on the bill.

By many accounts Wolves in the Throne Room are the premier Black Metal band in the US today. Formed in 2002 it didn't take them long to secure international acclaim. I personally haven't kept up with the metal scene since the '90s but I do know that WITTR rise above heaps and heaps of bands out there no matter what subgenre card you want to play. WITTR will be touring the United States and Europe extensively in 2009 so hit the show when they come through town. I only really talked with the Weaver brothers but both of them seemed very humble and on the level. Extremely nice guys who support open taping dependent on venue policies.

I'm completely lost on the song titles to be honest. A taper acquaintance out in Seattle asked if I'd be down to check out the show. I am glad I did. Zebulon Pike, Krallice and Empires opened.

I should have put this out three weeks ago but I didn't. As cliched as it sounds if you are or ever were into hardcore I sincerely encourage you to check this torrent out. I don't think there are many that would argue against the fact that Disembodied is the greatest hardcore band to ever come out of Minneapolis. They even have great in their URL. It was a personal honor for me to record this show. My apologies go out to the band if it's not tracked properly. Much respect to the Triple Rock for booking historic shows and being a safe haven for tapers (w/ band permission).

I also intended on taping the Russian Circles show at The Triple Rock a couple of Sundays ago but that didn't happen. 3 for 4 on Russian Circle shows. Apparently you can't win them all.

Back to back denials at First Avenue.

First I got shut down trying to tape Cursive & P.O.S. Friday 5/8. I ran into Stef outside and he was cool with taping as long as it didn't end up online which has always been our understanding. I taped Cursive at First Ave in '06 and more recently at the Triple Rock Jan. '09. They were very appreciative of taping. Baffling that they would be against taping 5 months later?

Three of us got denied at Mogwai Sunday 5/10. Only two of us had stands but we were all going to clamp to the same one to conserve space. Mogwai has over 90 recordings on the Live Music Archive and has supported taping for years. Come to find out from their sound engineer once inside nothing has changed. Once getting the OK P.J. and I did bring a stripped down rig inside. His recording turned out GREAT and can be downloaded here.

Not sure what's up. Taped three shows there in December and the P.O.S. homecoming in February. Others have been openly taping there recently as well. Perhaps they're trying to crack down on how much floor space tapers take up. Perhaps we should have contacted Mogwai ahead of time and brought the email.

About to redeem myself tonight pulling double duty on the West Bank. Folk Americana at the Cedar and Black Metal at the Triple Rock. I'm disappointed that I'll be missing No Bird Sing, Kristoff Krane and Junkyard Empire at the Turf Club. I love these cities but they don't always make decisions easy...

This was an intense set and I'm very happy to have had got it on tape. Please excuse the lack of a set list. Both old and new songs were played. Murder by Death support the taping & filming of their shows. Please support them by buying the official releases. Thanks to the band, The Triple Rock and to Dixie. MBD tour constantly so check them out when they roll through town. I ran into Adam at the bar and they are not used to playing early shows at all. He's a glutton when it comes to the Cook's Revenge. I myself prefer the BBQ Chicken Po-Boy. I wish I would have stayed post-show but I had been up since 6AM only to do it again the next day.

Please note that some schmuck spilled a drink about 5 inches to the left of my bag. Therefore, the first song and 1:06 of the second song are patched with the soundboard source. I was very happy with the way this turned out because the sbd mix sounds nice which can be rare. Thus I present you with a complete copy of the show. Enjoy.

April 2009 interview with the Decider.

Please support Kill the Vultures by picking up a copy of the new album "Ecce Beast" or any of the official releases. Thanks go out to Kill the Vultures and the Triple Rock for allowing this recording to happen. It was a busy night. Weeks heading into the show I was torn between archiving the local scene and catching dredg, one of my favorite bands from Los Gatos, CA at the Varsity. Respect to dredg but I could not let KTV's CD Release go unrecorded. Some drunken conversations weave in and out of the tape but so goes capturing an audience recording at a popular show on Friday night. With that said, this has to tie and or beat one of the First Avenue sets as my favorite KTV tape. The sound is crisp and the performance is meaty. That's a compliment, trust me.

Mike Mictlan of Doomtree and Mel Gibson & the Pants opened. What's up Mike the 2600 King.

First "official" City on the Make show of 2009. Anyone catch Jackie & the Rippers at the Nomad a few weeks ago? They definitely got some of their chops from City on the Make. Massey was worried about a head cold tonight but I think everyone brought their A game. This is no doubt my favorite Combat Zone yet. It's highly likely the new album will be out this year so keep your eyes out for that. The new material is really coming together.

The Careless Talk EP is out now. It has my vote for local EP of the year and there are always a ton of great EPs released around here. Mel Gibson & the Pants, Kristoff Krane and El Guante & Big Cats opened. Thanks to the bands and the Turf Club for being down with taping.

Short but sweet set from Jesse and the Rippers to help celebrate the Nomad's 4th anniversary. Lucy Michelle & the Velvet Lapels, The Running Scared and DJ Turtleneck were also on the bill to provide musical enjoyment. Really nice sound on this IMHO. A few chatters during quiet passages but over all the audience enhances the tape. I meant to get this out over a week ago but you know how life can be distracting. Still beating the two week mark.

The new album was recorded in a cabin "up North" as well as in a South Minneapolis basement.

In all honesty you won't find me listening to a lot of "gangsta rap" unless I'm somewhere where someone else is controlling the stereo. With that said, I really like Muja and I'm putting this recording out to help promote his first official LP "Thee Adventures Of a B-Boy D-Boy." Muja Messiah has basically taken over the Northside as far as quality Rap goes. The "MPLS Massacre Vol. 1" mixtape is also available for purchase through CD Baby, Amazon & available for download if you look. DJ Turtleneck is one of my favorite Twin Cities DJs. Check out his tracks as well.

Muja Messiah and Mayda opened for Heiruspecs. Not sure who Muja's hypeman was. Another MC also came out and joined him on a track. As you can see there's a few tracks I'm not familiar with but I'm sure you'll enjoy them. Thanks to The Triple Rock for being the spot.

So it's 12:30am and I can't sleep. Night cap? Sure. Checking the gmail and I see an 11:59pm email from Beak. It's permission to circulate the recent Hand Over Fist set. This is serious business. I can't sleep until this is out. Cocktail two. Let the FLACing begin. You see, this is pretty much a big deal because in the land of hip hop cats aren't fast to let tapes fly publicly or even permit taping to go down. I understand both the benefits of allowing it and not allowing it so I won't get into that. Let's just all be thankful we get this hear this piece of music though. This is the standard disclaimer for any live torrent but it's coming from deep down tonight; please support Hand Over Fist and pick up a copy of the album they put out in '08. Don't be afraid to also explore the rest of the DOOMTREE catalog. Thank you Beak & Mike. Goodnight.

After taping the P.O.S. show at First Avenue a friend and I went over to the Turf Club. Unfortunately we missed To Kill A Petty Bourgeoisie but we did catch Lookbook and A Whisper in the Noise. This was the first AWITN show I had seen in a while and only the second one that's been played recently (missed the show at the Whole). I was told this was also the first show with this line up. Glad to see Steve behind the drums and Quinn back on cello. It was the Turf Club on a Saturday night. This makes taping bands with quiet passages interesting. With that said, the recording turned out quite nice in my opinion. Hopefully I'll get around to doing a matrix with the soundboard tape. AWITN have a number of official releases to check out. Lookbook and TKAPB are both amazing as well.

Busy week indeed...

I've got torrents up from the Appleseed Cast show Tuesday. Thursday was another night spent at the Triple Rock. Beekeeper, All the Saints and Darker My Love opened for These Arms Are Snakes. Not a boring set in the bunch.

Unfortunately I didn't make it to the Cedar Friday night. Alexei curated another show as part of the 416 Club series including performances by Roma di Luna (duo), Eliza Blue, The Porchlights (Martin Devaney and Jake Hyer), The Floorbirds, Jack Torrey & Suzanne Vallie. I really wanted to record this show but it didn't happen.

Saturday night kept me going. The Never Better Tour made it's way home. It kind of goes without saying that Hand Over Fist (30mins), Sims (40mins) and P.O.S. (80+mins) all killed it at First Avenue. Afterwards we headed over to the Turf Club. Unfortunately we missed To Kill a Petty Bourgeoisie's set but I was able to record Lookbook and A Whisper in the Noise. 3rd time seeing Lookbook and they are super sick. Go see them and buy the ep. On the AWITN front West put together a new band. Steve Yasgar, one of the best drummers in the Twin Cities happens to be behind the kit.

Giants are a very tight band and I would tape future shows. I highly recommend you check them out when they come to town. They have two releases that you may also want to add to your music collection. Health was very supportive of taping so bring your gear. Soundboard and video are probably fine as well but be sure to talk with the band. This was a set opening for the Appleseed Cast. One For the Team and Daybreak were also on the bill.

The levels start out a little warm because I had to go get a friend from the bar.

There are so many great bands active in Minneapolis/St. Paul right now. Well going back to the late 70s/early 80s I guess that's nothing new. The Turf Club is the St. Paul venue in my opinion, so freezing wind punching me in the face and all I crossed that river to capture the 1s & 0s on another No Bird Sing set. The Drift @ The Triple Rock (Matrix)

I made audience and soundboard recordings of the Drift's set when they came through with MONO and Pelican. I originally seeded my audience tape but my buddy Zach took the soundboard and matrixed the two sources. I haven't listened yet but word is it's hard to tell if it's a live recording at times.

The audience source as well as a 5/18/08 ATP Festival recording can both be heard on the Live Music Archive.

Gastro Non Grata @ The Triple Rock

I went to tape Gospel Gossip at the Triple Rock last night but the taping conditions were not optimal. The place was packed and I showed up to the venue late after having a BBQ chicken po-boy and some beers in the bar. Saw some really nice sets though. Skirt, Jim & the French Vanilla and That's What You Get also played.

It was Gastro Non Grata, a free event featuring beer tasting with Tom Gardner of Duvel USA. Food tasting with Jim Grell of the Modern Cafe and cupcake tasting with Miel Y Leche Catering.

I wanted to get this great set out a couple of weeks ago but I fell into the drink. Thank you for baring with me.

Lucy Michelle and the Velvet Lapelles & Black Blondie opened Aby Wolf's CD Release show. * Unfortunately track one is missing the first 15 seconds. At the Cedar you usually start recording with the house intro. There was no intro and poof BB were on stage! Many thanks to both the bands and the Cedar for permitting these stellar sets to be recorded.
