This was a show that was put on by Mill City Scene to celebrate the release of their first issue. Mill City Scene is a newspaper/magazine/website that covers all things concerning the local hip hop scene in Minneapolis. This was the sickest local hip hop bill I've seen in a long long time. As you'll find on the recordings many of the performers felt the same way as well. If you live in the metro area pick up a copy of MCS and if you don't you can still read all of the great articles on their website. This show included performances by; El Guante & See More Perspective, Carnage, Hyder Ali, Kristoff Krane and Big Quarters. There was not a weak set in the bunch and you'll get to hear all of them.
I chose to post the Hyder Ali set first because they're my favorite local band to come out of 2008. I haven't seem them since the Kristoff Krane CD Release in September and I was excited to get another set out. I'm putting the soundboard out there because the mic source is full of people talking about porches and stuff. I usually don't get into the spammy street team stuff but if anyone reading was up for going to the Current's site and requesting their new single "Paper Dolls" it would be greatly appreciated by me and likely the band as well. If you're interested you can do so here.

I ventured out into a minus 25 degree wind chill to tape this show but I'm glad I did. I also made an honest attempt at the set list. After the Arrivals set I raised the mics a foot or less to get above the chatting a little more. This ended up being a good move.
Naked Raygun came to play a two night stand at the Triple Rock in I believe it was 2006. They played an All Ages show one night and a 21+ the next. This time around they were in town to help the Triple Rock celebrate their 10th Anniversary. The Framed (Minneapolis) and The Arrivals (Chicago) opened the show.
Naked Raygun are one of a kind and I encourage you to support them by purchasing their official releases. I'm sure many people already have.

This was a special Roma di Luna Holiday show with the Chastity Brown Band opening. Thanks go out to the artists and to the Cedar for allowing these sets to be recorded. There were 3 tapers in attendance (AKG 414, Microtech Gefell & MBHO). The original material that Roma di Luna produces is always top notch but this particular show is worth checking out for the chilling renditions of "Silent Night" and "Stand By Me" alone. Trust me, you won't be disappointed by anything in between either. The Cedar was filled to capacity and I still wish more people would have gotten the chance to witness this great evening of music. Long live the Cedar.

I know I'm always hyping the shows I post because, well I want people to check them out. With that said, this is a recording that I'm really excited to bring to people. I can't really think of a better way to close out the year as far as sharing recordings goes even though there are some great shows left. I started taping shows to document the music that I was into and like any "taper" I enjoy listening to live music. Not everyone digs live recordings, that's cool. I've always had nothing but respect for Heiruspecs but unfortunately I showed up late to the party late with some bands and as I was really getting into them back in 05 they decided it was time to slow things down. It's understandable, if you want the back story it's out there. Anyways, they've played shows here and there since the hiatus but this was the first real time I set out to tape them. I wish I would have taped the 10th anniversary sets at the Turf Club.
"Heiruspecs" is the 4th official LP from Heiruspecs and the first since 2004's "A Tiger Dancing." I'm extremely happy these guys are back full time and I'm grateful that Sean in particular was cool about this show being taped. In my top 3 shows of 2008? Yes. A huge thank you goes out to both Heiruspecs and First Avenue for making this recording possible. Big Quarters and Mayda opened. Please support your favorite local bands, whoever they are.

City on the Make return to the 400 Bar for their first show in nearly 3 months. This set kills. I was close to calling out for Arc Lamps but I didn't want to be that guy and I didn't need to hear my voice on the tape. Be excited for the new songs. Thanks to The 400 Bar for allowing me to tape these shows.

Dragons Power Up! and The 757s opened.
Burning options:
1) You might be able to squeeze an overburn.
2) Track 10 is a good spot to start disc 2.
3) You could omit track 18 when burning. (boo)

I was in hustle mode all afternoon to get this out to the fine fans of Amanda Palmer. I'm heading back to First Ave tonight to tape another show...
Many people are to be thanked for this recording's existence. Join me in thanking Katie, Mary, Sean and of course Amanda for starters. A huge thanks also goes to First Avenue for permitting audio/video documentation when the artist's/band's policy allows. Having taped the Dresden Dolls 2006 stop at First Avenue this show went on my calendar as soon as I saw it booked. It was an amazing night of music and performance art. I'm also very happy with the recording. I do suggest that you crank it. There are some "quieter" songs and I didn't want to use compression on the recording. Beware of clinking beer bottles as they hit the bin. I ran the mics high in anticipation of this, there are a few but it in no way detracts from the tape.
Please support Amanda's (and the Dresden Dolls) official releases.
The opening sets: They were great to say the least. Unfortunately Zoe is incomplete. I was given the green light by Amanda's camp (thank you) to enter the venue pre-doors around 7:30 to set up. I got there at 7:40, talked with a staff member at the front door about permission to set up early. He went to check, came back, told me it was cool and to go in through the side door. I was immediately stopped, made brief mention of my situation and was told I "had to wait in line like everyone else." No problem, being happy to tape at all and not waiting to create problems for anyone I went back outside. I tape at First Ave a good bit and don't want to become known as that guy who thinks he deserves special privileges. I got in around 8:20 thinking I was good since the opener usually goes on around 9. Zoe went on at 8:30 and I spent the majority of her set setting up. Some songs were recorded. The Builders and the Butchers set is complete and it sounds great.
What's up Chip.
