03/09/12 - City on the Make, Umami, Oaks @ Hell's Kitchen
Not going to lie, I went solely to see City on the Make for the 24th time and Oaks for the 1st time. Stating that neither band disappointed would be a severe understatement.
03/14/12 - Skoal Kodiak, Taboo, Ancestral Diet, Mother of Fire @ The Entry
All 4 of these sets were amazing in their own way. It was especially an honor to be able to document Taboo.
03/15/12 - Vernon Wayne, Buildings, Bird Sounds, Goodnight Ritual @ Hell's Kitchen
If I was in a band playing shows around town being on a bill with Bird Sounds would be intimidating. They just need to play longer sets.
03/17/12 - Went to Harriet Brewing last minute since I was in the neighborhood for a BBQ. Had a delicious pour of the limited East Side and got a growler of Divine Oculust on the way out. The BBQ was a success as well. Afterwords I headed to the Ra|hole to see Brain Tumors and Libyans. This all went unrecorded but I had a stellar time nonetheless. Even made it to Northeast in time for a very nice party. It was a long day and night...not because of any sort of americanized "holiday" but rather just because that's what Saturdays are for.
THIS WEEK:
(Not much going on)
03-21 - Basuketto @ The Red Stagg
03-22 - Goatflower, Dust Buns, Awkward Bodies, Time Destroyer @ Hexagon
03-22 - Dads (Omaha), Rollerblade, Cadette, the Velveteens @ Chamber of Secrets
03-22 - Bala Clavas (Houston), Mar Harbine, Bellow, Collin Gorman Weiland @ Bacon
03-23 - Cursive @ The 400 Bar
03-23 - Crusader No Remorse, Prostate, Kr Grauwacke @ Surfs Up
03-23 - Trevor's 30th Birthday Party w/ Tornado, The Skinnys, Teenage Moods, Southside Desire @ The Nomad
03-23 - Jonny Corndawg @ The Triple Rock
03-24 - Zoo Animal @ Treehouse (10am)
03-24 - Chastity Brown, Black Audience, Romantica @ The Cedar

Twin Cities Roots, Rock & Deep Blues Festival

Our good friend Chris Johnson is at it again bringing the Twin Cities Roots, Rock & Deep Blues Festival to Patrick's Cabaret (3010 Minnehaha Avenue). This makes me wish I still lived 2 blocks down the street from Patrick's. City on the Make playing ON East Lake sounds like a god damn party alone. Check out Harriet Brewing on your way out.

Empty's Tapes Exclusive: NEW City on the Make!
Photo: Peter LeeThose in attendance at Hell's Kitchen last Thursday were treated to a set of mostly new and unreleased City on the Make material. It's time for the next level and I for one am excited to hear these songs usher in summertime for the city I hold closet to my heart. But the hits don't stop there. Our friend Mischa has returned to Minneapolis after his extensive travels on the continent of Asia. Catch City on the Make next at The Nomad on Saturday June 4th with two guitarists and a bunch of new songs to keep Saturday night moving on the West Bank. Got a facespace? Thanks to Zach Boes for the mix and to MPLSSTPL for putting this show together.

Hibernation: Franklin & Hennepin Edition.
I haven't been near a computer since Friday afternoon and it's been lovely.
Missed dredg and Codeseven at the Cabooze last Wednesday. Just wasn't in the mood to head down there. dredg will be releasing a new album at the end of March though. Perish03 featuring CLAPS, Aaron and the Sea, DJ TRL, Compound and DJ Ghoul Talk was well worth the trip to Dinkytown.
Back in September I was invited to record the last ever Military Special show that went down at The Entry on Friday night. This was an assignment that I gladly accepted. From start to finish it was a great night of live music including sets from Lucy Michelle & The Velvet Lapelles, Phantom Tails, Estate and Dada Trash Collage. In other news, P.J., being the good fellow he is was able to record Nomia, Canyons of Static, and Lynxxe at The Whole. Look for those sets in the future.
Then we had another Saturday night with 5 or 6 shows to choose from. I narrowed it down to City on the Make at The Dakota, the Every Wall Will Fall event at The Turf Club and Os Mutantes were also playing The Cedar. To be completely honest the City on the Make show had been bumped to the top when I heard about it one loud evening at Palmer's a month prior. Then the freezing rain and a general sense of laziness set in. Please tell me you recorded City on the Make's third ever Dakota Late Night installment? Please?

Marijuana Deathsquads & City On The Make Take Loring Park.
This heat is death so it's a good thing there will be plenty of shade provided by Loring Park and Nick & Eddie tomorrow. At 7pm a sonic cleansing will rain down onto 55403 thanks to the MDS crew. Afterwords those in attendance will be treated to a screening of the Coen Brothers' Fargo. The afterparty place to be is across the street at Nick and Eddie for the Southside's City on the Make. These gentlemen come highly recommended so be sure to catch their N & E debut. It's going to be a long night and I hope I see you there. Special thanks to Andrea Swensson and Gimme Noise for keeping the tradition alive.

Northeast Minneapolis and afghani pizza
Will Marijuana Deathsquads At Nick and Eddie (V) get posted before I get to sleep? It's possible. Will it be posted next? Yes.
Friday night at The Hexagon was a grand ole gathering of friends. Sleeping in the Aviary, Military Special, Icarus Himself and Alpha Centauri kept things lively. Saturday night it was a privilege to record Lookbook, City on the Make, The Pines, Peter Wolf Crier, Jeremy Messersmith and Romantica in the Mainroom as part of Vita.MN's SXSW send off. After the Mainroom Ray and I rolled over to The 331 in his cadi to catch Gospel Gossip, Dante & The Lobster and Magic Castles.
Did I mention that the afghani pizza at the Crescent Moon Bakery is amazing?

The show must go on...
FLIGHT: 3386 STATUS: Canceled. Merry Christmas.
Since Mother Nature just robbed me of being able to see my Grandparents for the first time in over two years it's back to business. I think it's also safe to pull the Buddy Holly records back out.
Well, I don't know where I'm going to spend this lovely holiday but since I'll be in town you can find me walking back and forth between the Triple Rock and the Nomad on Saturday. THE ABOMINABLE SNOW JAM is going down at the Nomad and Heiruspecs is having two "Home for the Holidays" shows at the Triple Rock. There will be an Early show as well as a Late show. Be sure you make the appropriate Facebook RSVPs as soon as possible.

Holidays can't slow me down living in a bachelor hell. This was Mischa's last show with City on the Make. We're wishing him and his better half safe travels as they embark on a journey to South Korea to teach English. You do not want to miss the dueling Strata sickness of Mr. Kegan and Mr. Blomgren. The new jams are coming along nicely. I've been listening to The Gleam for coming up on two years now but for whatever reason this is the first time I've caught up with them live. As was the word on the street they do not disappoint! Don't miss The Gleam's new album due out January 2010. The Gleam, Fuck Knights and Coltrane Motion supported Kill the Vultures. This was a torturous night for live music attenders in Minneapolis. Hank III was at the Mainroom, City on the Make and Military Special were at the Kitty Cat Klub. While I wish I could have been at all three shows I'm certainly glad I was able to make these recordings at The Triple Rock. It was a knock down drag out Saturday night.

More fun than a Thursday night probably should be. The Entry can be a tricky place to get a tape that's not heavy on crowd ambience but everyone was throwing down and having a good time. That's what matters. Playing it back it's actually a good Entry recording. First show with Pete. Go see this guy's chops. If not at the next City on the Make show then perhaps Military Special. If anyone can make this transition happen it's Mr. Blomgren. He's also popular with the ladies of Minneapolis. Maybe you still need to pick up a copy of the new LP "Keep This on Fire" or one of the older releases? Aaron & the Sea and History Books supported. What up to my main man Mischa Kegan.

This was scheduled to go down at the 400 but they're having troubles of some sort and cleared their concert calendar the night before. Luckily the kind folks at the Bedlam stepped up to host the show. Please support City on the Make by picking up a copy of the new album "Keep This on Fire." The album can be streamed at cityonthemake.net. Don't be shy about checking out the Bedlam Theatre either, great menu & staff. My personal favorite balcony in Minneapolis.
