So one of my favorite bands came through town last night for the first time since September '07 (LMA download link). You can be sure that it was a good night all around, especially with a bill consisting of Red Sparowes (Los Angeles), Caspian (Beverly, MA) and Fang Island (Brooklyn). Do not miss this tour. Well, since it's almost over chances are you may have. Don't worry, Caspian is constantly touring. This includes 25 dates in Europe this May. Caspian's second album "Tertia" was released last year through The Mylene Sheath. Thanks to the band and to The 400 Bar for allowing this recording to happen. Caspian has other live recordings available for free download on The Live Music Archive.

Be sure to tune in to Nowlikephotographs and Radio K (770AM/100.7FM/104.5FM) this Monday at 8PM Central for an interview with the band from the basement of the 400 Bar. I believe interviews were also conducted with Red Sparowes and Fang Island. Nowlikephotographs can also be streamed online.

I'm also excited to annouce that Caspian will now be making ONE list spot available for anyone interested in recording the show no matter which continent they may happen to be playing that night. First come first served. This is of course dependent on the venue's existing policies which may prohibit recording. This offer may also not apply to festivals or tours where Caspian is supporting in which recording is not allowed. Please contact me at the email address above for more information. Your interest is appreciated by both the band and myself. - John

Knife Word and Dark Dark Dark supported The Chickadee Mountain Martyrs on the eve of their CD Release. Thanks to The Hexagon for hosting. This release was delayed on the account of my not knowing many of the song titles. A special thanks to a certain someone for assistance with that. I'm also a bit sad to say this may or may not have been the second to last Knife World show ever. I'm certainly glad I was there to document it either way. You can still expect to see Jon at this year's Heliotrope Festival (May 27th, 28th & 29th) at the Ritz Theater in NE Minneapolis. He may or may not be playing under the moniker "Fuckhead Rogering And The Goddamned Henhouse."

So This Week...

Despite great shows at The Nomad, Turf, Hexagon, Artists' Quarter and First Avenue I stayed in Saturday night. Been laying low since Sleepytime on Friday and don't plan to go back out until Wednesday. I'm also back on my side of town so perhaps I'll get some things uploaded.

Actually, I just heard that Marijuana Deathsquads, Batmen and Solid Gold are playing the Entry tonight and might run down to check that out. Other then that...

Wednesday April 21st - MDS @ Nick & Eddie

Took a rare night off last week but looking forward to N & E again.

Thursday April 22nd - Black Audience @ Red Stag

The Red Stag is the Thursday spot.

Friday April 23rd - Caspian + Red Sparowes + Fang Island @ 400 Bar

I've been looking forward to this show for weeks. Who would miss Red Sparowes and Caspian on the same bill? Don't be silly.

Saturday April 24th - John Henry's Birthday @ The Turf w/ Seawhores + Teenage Moods + Chickadee Mountain Martyrs + Voytek

Well, we're all turning 30 this year and Henry's got a sick line up at The Turf to celebrate his turn.

Saturday April 24th - El Ten Eleven @ The Nomad

And if you're not at The Turf you may want to check out El Ten Eleven from Los Angeles. I caught them last time and they were indeed great.

Sunday April 25th - Past Lives w/ Brute Heart @ The Entry

Jordan and Morgan from The Blood Brothers come through town with their new band Past Lives Sunday and I sure hope I don't miss it. Local favorites Brute Heart open.

P.O.S. Gets The Band Together

Word is out by now that P.O.S. played a series of three (The Turf Club, The Triple Rock & Nick and Eddie) "secret shows" in the Twin Cities this past week. Some relied on twitter for this news others just happened to be making their usual rounds about town. The purpose of these shows was to debut a new full band set heading into Coachella. Anyone happen to catch the set at the Gobi Stage earlier this afternoon? Well if missed out this week don't fret because they will be playing an extended set Sunday May 30th at this year's Soundset 2010 at Canterbury Park. Tickets can be purchased here. The band features DJ Plain Ole Bill (Get Cryphy), Ryan Olson (Gayngs, Marijuana Deathsquads & Building Better Bombs), Benjamin Ivascu (STNNNG, Private Dancer, Building Better Bombs & MDS to name a few) and Isaac Gale (Building Better Bombs & Marijuana Deathsquads).

P.O.S. - "Never Better" Live at The Triple Rock (04/13/10)

Official releases are available through Rhymesayers Entertainment and can be purchased at Fifth Element Online.

Audio Baseball Cards...

An acquaintance of mine from out East, Dave M., shared a story on Taperssection today that I found to be rather interesting. When various people have asked me about taping/trading shows over the years I've often compared it to collecting baseball cards when you're a kid. I've never heard the term "Audio Baseball Cards" before but I think Guster's FOH Gordon might be onto something.

"Ok, so maybe I just like this quote because it helped me get a show taped last night, but it rings pretty true for me.

So the story is that I went to tape Guster last night at the Hanover Theatre in Worcester, MA. As I'm walking from my parking spot to the entrance, I see Gordon, their FOH engineer, hanging out behind the venue. He asks where I'm set up, and offers up the seat right next to his desk - according to him, the room has no low end whatsoever up front, so it'd sound better back by the board. I finish up our chat and head inside.

Unbeknownst to me, it's a union venue, so I got stopped at the door. I gave them the tour manager's name, and they radio back and then escort me to the side entrance where there's a bunch of venue staff standing around. A girl with a radio says "You're the one who talked to the tour manager? Wait here." She goes back and brings out a guy who explains that since it's a union venue, they'd have to charge double rate for anyone recording who's not a union member, and that'd get charged to the school who's putting it on, etc. He says he'll take the stuff back to the tour manager and I can pick it up after the show. I'm friendly with the crew and I know they'll raise holy hell if anything happens to my gear, so I say ok and hand it over.

15 minutes later, I see Gordon heading to the desk, and he waves me over, motioning to the spot he's got in mind. Then he frowns, noticing I don't have my gear with me anymore. I explain the situation and he says with a wink, "Let me take care of it. I know people". Five minutes later he walks back out of the side door, carrying my gear and my stand. I ask him what he said, and if he was union. "Nah, I just told him that what you're doing doesn't compete with them in any way. You're not making a professional recording, it's basically like audio baseball cards. Something you guys make and keep like memorabilia, or to trade around with other fans." Apparently the guy then said "Well, if you HAVE to do it..." and Gordon responded "Yeah, I do. We like to be accommodating."

Shows will be posted to LMA soon." - Dave M. aka greenone

The first show I ever recorded was Sleepytime in Tempe, AZ Jan. 2004. I have since missed at least three Minneapolis SGM shows for various reasons but I redeemed myself last Monday. This is an amazing band. If you're into it please support them by buying the official releases. Faun Fables and Dub Trio were also recorded. Many thanks to the bands and to The Triple Rock for permitting these sets to be documented. - John 04/18/09

So while Judgement Day were playing The 400 Bar last night I was recording Marijuana Deathsquads at Nick & Eddie. I'm confident in my decision but as a nod to Judgement Day here's my 2008 recording from The Varsity Theater. Hopefully I can catch them the next time they stop through.

Check out their new video for "Cobra Strike" here. It's great!

What's Shakin' April?

Just because I haven't been uploading recordings doesn't mean I moved to an inner ring suburb to start a family. Last Wednesday was of course MDS at Nick & Eddie. Last Thursday was the Rocky Votolato show at the Triple Rock followed by making it to the Red Stag in time to catch Black Audience's second set. Friday at the Dakota was a great time. I should really be catching Dakota Late Night more often. Saturday night I saw Moonstone and Skoal Kodiak at the Soap Factory in NE. I had the necessities for patching out of a board but there wasn't really a board to patch out of. Two great sets nonetheless. I took Sunday and Monday nights off from anything having to do with shows or computers. It was fabulous. Last night was the first back 'lot BBQ of the season.

This week...

Tuesday the 6th:

The Builders & The Butchers + RX Bandits + Zechs Marquise @ Triple Rock 5PM

I'm excited to catch The Builders & The Butchers again. They were great opening for Amanda Palmer in the Mainroom. I've also heard good things about RX Bandits. Not familiar with Zechs Marquise but looking forward to checking them out.

Wednesday the 7th:

Sleeping in Aviary + Teenage Moods @ The Nomad
MDS @ Nick & Eddie

Torn between heading to The Nomad and keeping the Wednesday night N & E tapes alive.

Thursday the 8th:

Black Audience @ Red Stag

Thursday night at the Red Stag is an easy decision.

Friday the 9th:

Dosh + Face Candy + Ghostband @ The Entry

You can find me at The Entry Friday night.

Saturday the 10th:

Dosh @ MacPhail Center For Music
Paragraphs + Falcon Arrow @ Nick & Eddie (Last show for a while!)
Courtney McClean & The Dirty Curls Debut EP Release @ The Beat

Sunday the 11th:

Chastity Brown @ The Cake Shop
Dosh @ Bedlam Theatre

"For the last of the Minutemen recordings…I bring you a pretty special one. This is an amazing FM broadcast, so if you have been wary of the Aud(x)’s I’ve been up’ing of late, ya may want to check this one out…

Recorded for the SPIN RADIO CONCERT for syndicated release to radio stations all over the country, what was eventually broadcast in syndication was an 11 song mish-mash of the actual set played. When it was first broadcast on KPFK-FM, however, the full 23 song set was aired! This broadcast also doesn’t have the ANNOYING DJ promotional chatter that was peppered throughout the SPIN broadcast…Just the Minutemen doing their thing…

Since my original recording cut off on “Green River”, I included the partial version as well as the full version from a promo LP of the SPIN show, (ya can hear the pop in the vinyl). The missing “The Red & The Black” was also included from that vinyl. I do have a master SPIN promo vinyl, but no access to a turntable right now, so I got them from Sir Demon Brown’s “CORNDOGS.ORG” site. Thanks to him fer that…The partial version of “Green River” doesn’t have the annoying DJ intro the SPIN show has, and it sounds better than the LP version, my reason fer leaving the partial version here…

A couple of minor dropouts cannot kill this one…NOTHING can kill this one, it is fucking ridiculous…One of the first minutemen recordings I ever got, and still a hallmark recording."

Since I don't even have The Appleseed Cast or The Soviettes recordings ready it might be a bit before I do anything with the recording of Rocky's set Thursday night (04/01/10) at The Triple Rock. I didn't want to leave you hanging so I thought it would be a nice time to recirculate Rocky's 2007 stop at The Varsity Theater. This was recording was well received at The Traders' Den back in '07. Owen and Chad from Drag the River were also on the bill.

At the moment I believe the only other recording of Black Audience publicly available is a live track from the Entry in their myspace player. Check this out!

"Black Audience opened the attack with a salvo of boogie, blues and AAAAR & B. While the band backed her up on banjo, calimba and bodhran, lead singer Jayanthi Kyle made me spine shiver with her haunting renditions of old blues and gospel numbers." (Jon Behm, Howwastheshow.com)

"They call themselves Black Audience because, as Robin says, "When the lights are in your eyes, every audience is black."" (Steve Marsh)

Long time fan of Black Audience here. Everything above comes from my original post on The Traders' Den in 2008. I would also like to add that Pi was a great establishment. Sure I was only there a few times but I wish it could have been saved but not everything in life is able to be saved. The main reason of the recirculation of this recording is to let you know that Black Audience has another residency at The Red Stag Supper Club in Northeast Minneapolis every Thursday night this month. We've made it to April 2010 everybody.

This show was with Alixa and Naima of Climbing Poetree and Black Blondie.

Show flier coming...need to get to The Triple Rock...
