Wow, what a show. This was a co-album release with Dark Dark Dark. Caroline Smith and the Goodnight Sleeps supported Saturday evening. This recording is available in FLAC format via BitTorrent. Further information regarding those technologies can be found along the right side of the blog below the Venue listing. It's possible that this recording may also be available on the Live Music Archive at some point but right now this torrent is the only way to obtain it. Roma di Luna's Then the Morning Came as well as Dark Dark Dark's Wild Go are both available through the bands' websites. I'm sure they are or will be available at a good number of the local Minneapolis/St. Paul record stores (check The Electric Fetus, Treehouse Records, Cheapo, Yeti Records and Extreme Noise).

Thank you to the bands and to First Avenue for allowing us to document this show. Much respect to Lee and Conrad.

Roma di Luna Release Third LP: Then the Morning Came

On Saturday October 2nd Roma di Luna will release Then the Morning Came in the Mainroom at First Avenue.

"Mythologist Joseph Campbell once wrote, “Love is a friendship set to music.” For Alexei & Channy Casselle, husband and wife who began playing as Roma di Luna five years ago, that love is too big not to share. What started as a simple yet profound folk-singing duo on the 2006 EP Face of My Friends and 2007's Find Your Way Home began to develop as a band on 2008’s Casting the Bones. Now with full-time band members in the dynamic rhythm section of Ben Durrant, James Everest and Ryan Lovan, as well as vocalist Jessi Prusha, Roma di Luna has come into it’s own on the forthcoming full-length Then The Morning Came."

"Then The Morning Came weaves together influences of roots, bluegrass, gospel, psychedelia and soul, arrangements the band members brought to the structures supplied by Channy & Alexei. Channy's evocative voice remains front and center, surrounded by a magnificent array of sounds and textures inspired by the collaborative and adventurous approach the whole band took to producing the album. Recorded from April of 2009 to July 2010 at Crazy Beast Studio (Dosh, Andrew Bird) the process of Then The Morning Came was surrounded by births and deaths, often beset by a chaos and confusion that almost stopped the music-making altogether. Rising from challenges, the new life of the four babies who were born to the band members during recording was a source of comfort and strength. Channy wrote of the time, “Most of these songs were written and recorded with my newborn daughter in my arms. They are a reflection of the life and death surrounding her first year on this earth, the love and the madness I found in myself and the friendship of all my fears.” In that compass of Roma di Luna’s personal joys and struggles they made a record that builds on the traditions of the band and the cornerstones of American music, but contains its own entrancing power that is wholly and passionately their own."

Knife Word and Dark Dark Dark supported The Chickadee Mountain Martyrs on the eve of their CD Release. Thanks to The Hexagon for hosting. This release was delayed on the account of my not knowing many of the song titles. A special thanks to a certain someone for assistance with that. I'm also a bit sad to say this may or may not have been the second to last Knife World show ever. I'm certainly glad I was there to document it either way. You can still expect to see Jon at this year's Heliotrope Festival (May 27th, 28th & 29th) at the Ritz Theater in NE Minneapolis. He may or may not be playing under the moniker "Fuckhead Rogering And The Goddamned Henhouse."

8 "Shows" in 5 days?

It all started last night with the 3rd week of the Wednesday night Marijuana Deathsquads at Nick & Eddie. Now, I'd really like to make it to The Hexagon tonight to record Sorry OK but I'm on the fence about closing the Hex three nights in a row. I realize some people may do this all the time but not so much while recording the bands and making sure expensive equipment gets home safely. So if you're not charging batteries for the weekend you should check out Sorry OK + Shakedown City + The Boys N' The Barrels + Porch Knights at the Hexagon TONIGHT.

What is known for certain is that on Friday I plan to run the main rig at the Hex for the Bouncer Fighter CD Release w/ Children of Euler + TBA while also running a smaller rig at Memory Lanes for Sleeping in the Aviary + Me and My Arrow. It'll be a champagne jam Seward style. On the books for Saturday is catching Andrew Broder's opening set for Retribution Gospel Choir at The Triple Rock and then breaking down as quickly as possible to catch a cab to the Hex. Sorry RGC but nothing will stop me from recording The Chickadee Mountain Martyrs CD Release. If this go well I hope to arrive in time to capture Knife World. Getting set up in time for Dark Dark Dark shouldn't be a problem...really looking forward to all three sets so we'll see what happens.

On the Sabbath I'm pretty jazzed at the opportunity to record at The Cake Shop again. This month's show features an intimate sit down with The Pines including the ever popular 4pm and 7pm sets format. As with last's months show with Jeremy Messersmith I'm in for both!

This Saturday February 20th there is a very important show at The Hexagon (2600 27th Avenue South) in Seward, Minneapolis. The Chickadee Mountain Martyrs release their debut LP through Anti-Civ Records. This is also Luc's annual birthday show so if you appreciate him as a person perhaps you might consider buying him a drink and or buying his record? An earthquake in Illinois could not shake this evening's support loose. Be sure to arrive early to avoid missing Dark Dark Dark and Knife World taking the stage. In short, The Chickadee Mountain Martyrs are my favorite local band of 2010 but I reserve the right to make that official until it is known how many units they can move. Thanks for reading and I sincerely hope to see you at The Hexagon this Saturday.

Bouncer Fighter + The Chickadee Mountain Martyrs CD Releases

It's true, there will be other great shows going on around town the weekend of the 19th but you'll find me staked out down the street at The Hexagon. On Friday February 19th Children of Euler and TBA will support Bouncer Fighter as they release their long awaited debut LP. Be sure to stop back over Saturday February 20th for Luc's annual birthday show which is also doubling as The Martyrs debut LP release as well. Get there early for rock solid support in Dark Dark Dark and Knife World. I cannot wait to hear both of these releases which will be available through Anti-Civ Records.

What are you doing the weekend of the 19th?

WHY? - "The Hallows" @ The Triple Rock

I'm calling this the show of the year. When all is said and done I'll probably have seen at least 80. Hey some people knit and others go to shows. Yeah it's true, I've been waiting since July but I'm trying to leave bias behind. I do have two confessions to make. 1) This was my first time seeing WHY? live. 2) I was afraid the hype was going to leave me disappointed. I was wrong. I spent over $30 at the merch table, mostly on stuff I already owned. My only request? Please play "The Fall of Mr. Fifths" when you get to the Desert.

I don't have permission to post the full set so we'll have to start with something everyone knows...

WHY? - "The Hallows" Live in Minneapolis

If you dig that all kinds of records are available here.

Dark Dark Dark (Minneapolis) supports 09/30-10/10. AU (Portland) supports through 11/11.

WHY? returning to Minneapolis...

Back in early '08 I heard whispers from a buddy in California about catching Why? at the Entry with Heiruspecs & Gospel Gossip. Looking back it was smashed in between Converge @ the Triple Rock and City on the Make @ the Bedlam. Despite having two of my favorite local bands on the bill I skipped the show and it's been something that has deeply pained me lately. Lucky for all of us Schedule Two was there to document the set.

Props to solace for the Triple Rock heads up last night. I starting digging around for dates and located them on The Tape. Check out their site for the press release and more information on the new album "Eskimo Snow" due out September 22nd on Anticon.
