More Cowbell Wednesday Series @ The Turf Club

I swear I do not work at or get paid by The Turf Club. It just so happens they book a lot of great shows. Speaking of Poor Weather Club, More Cowbell's Wednesday Series has a tasty show this evening. G-Biz, Ill Ease and Ratt Poison also throw down tonight in the Midway.

Thanks to morecowbell.net you can print out this flyer and get in for $3.

It was an honor to tape the legendary Los Angeles punk band The Urinals. I'd also like to give them a sincere thank you for the green light to share this with folks. This was the last of three shows with the mighty Killdozer. Mannequin Men (Chicago) and The Blind Shake (Minneapolis) opened. I'll try to get some tracks up from the other sets as well. Thanks to Herb, Ryan and the rest of The Turf Club staff for doing what they do.

As of Summer 2009 The Urinals have been finishing up their new 13 track album. They're working with Mike Martt (Thelonious Monster, Tex and the Horseheads) at Greenhouse in Long Beach. Keep an eye out for that.

Golden Birthdays & Tour Managers...

So if I let Thursday's tour manager know that the 29th is my "golden birthday" do you think they'll show mercy on the taping front? I'm very interested in getting a recording of the La Dispute set and was given the green light by them to do so. I've heard from people on the West coast that The Fall of Troy are cool with it as well. In all honesty if I need to pack it up before Thursday go on to accomplish this than I'm down. Taping "bigger" bands can get tricky. Even if they're cool with it they may get trumped by the management. I also haven't tried taping at The Varsity since my homie Erik's departure so things could get interesting.

Unfortunately, Young Widows have dropped off the tour but will be returning to The Triple Rock in November with Russian Circles. Their previous two shows (Triple Rock & Turf Club) are in the archives.

Besides being a gorgeous venue what's the best part about seeing shows at The Varsity? Mesa Pizza is across the street!

Benefit show for the Daniele Finley Foundation.

The Daniele Finley Foundation's mission is "to provide emergency support to young adults in the Twin Cities." Here's another snippet from the foundation's website regarding last night's event. "When Daniele died, we asked that people give memorial donations to the Animal Humane Society. We still like that idea. People also gave us a basket of cash at the funeral and in the mail. And on September 27, a benefit will be held at The Triple Rock to raise more money." If you would like to make a donation please email or call 651-644-4540.

The line-up included; The Hostages, Lusurfer, Poor Weather Club, Best Bitch In Show, and DJ Rock the Monkey. Having taped The Blackthorns at The Varsity in '07 I was particularly interested in catching Poor Weather Club (ex-Blackthorns). Unfortunately that was the only set that I taped and I'll check with the band on getting some of those tracks posted.

On a side note, sorry to say that the Blackthorns recording mentioned above is trapped on a HDD that went out on me in July '07. I'm hoping to recover it when data-recovery does not cost $$$.

Killdozer, The Urinals, Mannequin Men & The Blind Shake @ The Turf

Wow. To be completely honest I was aware of Killdozer & The Urinals but I never consistently listened to them and therefore never really "got into" them. I can't think of anywhere else I would have rather been around town last night. Mannequin Men (Chicago) & The Blind Shake (Minneapolis) both killed their time on stage as well. Whoever put this line up together knew what they were doing. Truly historical. Many people missed out but that's how it goes. Thanks to The Turf Club for hosting.

So far I have permission to post a couple two or three songs from each set but I want to confirm this. I'll try to circulate full sets if possible.

On this night we celebrated Steve Yasgar's birthday. Steve's lady friend Lee was caring enough to put together a special surprise bill. Communist Daughter, Ela (reunited w/ original line-up) and Building Better Bombs played as well. It was one of the most complete & solid shows from start to finish in recent memory. As you can see this was also a very unique Roma di Luna set. Not only are the duo performances rare these day but the set was full of brilliant covers...some perhaps never performed before of ever again. Have a listen, you'd be a fool to miss this one.

Please check back if you're interested in FLAC files. I also wanted to try to get some of the other sets posted. Ela is close.

I'll be in Phoenix taping WHY? but you won't want to miss this line up in the Mainroom. Get your tickets soon because it's likely to sell out fast. Leave it to Minneapolis to host a bill like this. I wish I wasn't missing it.

Please do me one small favor and consider picking up tickets at The Electric Fetus instead of Ticketmaster.

Viruses & BBQs...

I've been dealing with a virus the past couple of weeks but today I win. Thanks to a friend I put in a new 750GB drive, copied all of my data over and reloaded Vista.

Tapes are piling up but a certain real estate deal is more important at the moment anyways. Happy grilling from the Southside where there's always something going down in the back lot whether you like it or not.

There's a huge buzz about No Bird Sing around town and for good reason...they are the best new local band of 2009. This evening was a great time in general for being a gathering of friends in my favorite Minneapolis venue. Kristoff Krane and Black Blondie also lit the room up. Special guest DJ James Diers kept the party moving. No Bird Sing's self-titled debut album is available as a digital download on various sites (Amazon and iTunes for starters) as well as a limited CD run. The CDs were only being sold at the two release shows; Eclipse Records (9/11) and The Triple Rock (9/12). You should contact the band to inquire about remaining copies. While you're hitting the favorite online shop check out Kristoff Krane's "This Will Work For Now" and Black Blondie's "Do You Remember Who You Wanted to Be." Thanks to The Triple Rock for holding down Cedar Avenue.

This show was sponsored by 89.3 The Current and Culture Bully.

Dahr Jamail @ The Cedar

I have several recordings from the weekend to put out there but something that I'm most excited about is Dahr Jamail's reading from the Junkyard Empire EP Release show at The Cedar on Friday night. Dahr Jamail is an American journalist who has reported extensively on the Iraq War. Between 2003 and 2005 Jamail spent 8 months in Iraq publishing first hand accounts on his website, Dahr Jamail's Mideast Dispatches. As clichéd as this typically sounds over the interwebs it was a true honor to be able to meet this man and to hear him speak. A sincere thank you to Junkyard Empire and The Cedar for giving him a venue with which to address the Twin Cities. Jamail's new book, "The Will to Resist - Soldiers Who Refuse to Fight in Iraq and Afghanistan" is available now. It can be purchased locally at Mayday Books on the West Bank.

Please check out what Dahr had to share with us. Here's a 320kbps mp3. (Right Click > "Save Link As")

Attracted to Gods CD Release

I had intended on documenting the Attracted to Gods CD Release at The Triple Rock Saturday the 29th. Batteries were charged & gear was ready to go but after back to back nights in the Entry I started feeling lazy after work. A back lot BBQ with the neighbors ensued and I unfortunately never made it out of Longfellow.

Never mind my procrastination! Attracted to Gods released their new album "Sinners and Saints" on Blue Worm Records. Prairie Sons, Truck Stops Across America and Phil Little opened.

ATG were taped August '08 @ The Triple Rock.
