Closing out July '09...

First things first, I need to get Future of the Left's 7/22 set posted (with their blessing) hopefully tonight.

Last night More Cowbell presented a show at The Turf Club with a stacked bill that included; Gifts From Enola, Paragraphs, Falcon Arrow & peoplearemagnets. Nothing says Wednesday night like sippin' ice water while enjoying some fine post-rock until the wee hours of the morning. Opps, I said the "p" word. Catch Gifts From Enola on their way back East if possible. Here's hoping the tapes sound nice. They're right behind Future of the Left.

Friday invloves a bit of a predicament. I was already down for the Ice Palace show at the Turf but upon speaking with my friend JK last night I was reminded that Disembodied play an early show at Station 4. Some 10 bands for $10 tour including Posion the Well, Bane, Terror, Disembodied, The Ghost Inside, War of Ages, This Is Hell, Death Before Dishonor, High Hopes & Relentless. This thing starts at 1:30pm and I'm really only interested in taping Disembodied. I'd be tempted to cover the last three bands if they were cool with it and time permitted. HMMM. I was planning on heading "home" to relax before another late night at the Turf but a decision to haul gear to work will have to be made before Friday morning. The idea of protecting a stand & bag of gear from an AA hardcore crowd at Station 4 does not sound appealing.

Please bare with me on megaupload...

I bought web hosting today. I'm configuring everything right now so soon I'll be able to move away from free hosting sites and torrents all together. Well, there will still be torrents of certain shows but eventually I'd like to provide direct downloads in both .flac and .mp3 formats.

Keep your eyes peeled for emptystapes.com!

Staying busy is good for your mental health.

Caught some of the One Day in July festival and it was a great time. Valuable information shot out of the PA. I may post some of the speeches and a couple tracks for the City on the Make set.

We hit the West Bank for DJ Turtleneck's monthly Live at the BBQ @ The Nomad. This month's BBQ was hosted by I Self Devine. Good friends and good food mean everything on a nice Saturday afternoon. Don't miss the final installment on 8/29 which will be hosted by Muja Messiah.

OK then, it's time to check out the new Uptown venue Sauce Spirits & Soundbar. Someone has to see if there's an unobtrusive spot for a mic stand. Word is it's a small place so I'm doubtful but they have a calendar that's already stacked with solid shows regardless. Looking forward to seeing The Millionth Word again. MC/VL and Count Vesuvius. 9:30 doors & $5 cover.

Stop back mañana for some live mp3s...

One Day In July...

Going to hop the train to check out some of the One Day In July Street Festival.

Brother Ali featuring BK One, Guante & Big Cats!, Mic Crenshaw, The Brass Kings, Ellis, 2 Tone Runts, City on the Make and Best Bitch in Show are all throwing down to make sure people don't forget.

This was a rare performance by Crescent Moon is in Big Trouble. Maybe their second this year? Maybe their sixth ever? You try not to miss these if at all possible but sometimes it happens. Well, if they had to listen to one in 2067 I'd like for it to be this one because the quality is sassy. The performance and the sonics are tops. The BBQ Chicken Po-Boy was delicious as usual. Look for their EP on emusic or other fine online stores and independent record shops.

WHY? returning to Minneapolis...

Back in early '08 I heard whispers from a buddy in California about catching Why? at the Entry with Heiruspecs & Gospel Gossip. Looking back it was smashed in between Converge @ the Triple Rock and City on the Make @ the Bedlam. Despite having two of my favorite local bands on the bill I skipped the show and it's been something that has deeply pained me lately. Lucky for all of us Schedule Two was there to document the set.

Props to solace for the Triple Rock heads up last night. I starting digging around for dates and located them on The Tape. Check out their site for the press release and more information on the new album "Eskimo Snow" due out September 22nd on Anticon.

I kept this one on the shelf because of the five unreleased songs that were played. Out of respect for the band these songs will not be made available for download. This post is unique in that it's the first time I've offered hi-res mp3s for direct download instead of .flac files via a pesky torrent hosted on another site.

More hi-res mp3 downloads of other shows to come. Keep an eye on the "mp3 series" tag.

Due to a lot of the material played being unreleased I didn't want to post the full recording. You can still check out a hi-res mp3 of "Fiction" here.

In anticipation of the party being thrown by millcityscene.com this Thursday at the Barfly I present this direct download (no messing with torrents). On the bill are El Guante with Big Cats!, Kredentials, Hy-C Tha Image and Simply Us with DJ Swee2th.

This is the same recording that was offered via torrent here. If you're not familiar with extracting files from a .RAR I use WinRAR which is available here. If you need help converting .flac to .wav or .mp3 check out FLAC Frontend. There are PC, Mac and Linux versions available. Traders' Little Helper is also a good FLAC converter. I want you to hear the best possible quality, that's why I'm a fan of FLAC. MP3 downloads are on the way though.

Bella Koshka @ The Beat (AA)

Rewind to May 23rd...after catching City on the Make at the Memory Lanes block party I went over to the Triple Rock for Big Quarter's CD Release show. The early show was still in progress when I started setting up. I was able to catch the last 2-3 songs from Bella Koshka's set. Yeah, at that point I knew I was going to have to tape this band soon. Good thing they have a show at the Beat Coffee House this Thursday. Haven't been to the Beat for a show since October 2007 (Empires, Portrait of a Drowned Man, Sleeping in Gethsemane & Ladyslipper) which is unfortunate because I really like the place. It's all about the French Press.

Don't miss out on this great show at a very underrated venue...

Crescent Moon is in Big Trouble...

Lots of stuff goin' down on the West Bank Saturday night but someone needs to make sure the show at the Triple Rock gets taped. I've nominated myself. I'm honestly not familiar with The Teddy Holidays but I'm looking forward to checking them out. What got my attention immediately was the fact that Crescent Moon is in Big Trouble and No Bird Sing will be sharing the same bill. 9pm doors with a $6 cover. That's a steal to see these bands.

This Weekend @ The 501 Club

I know lots of folks will be at the Basilica Block Party for The Jayhawks, The Black Crowes & more or Frank Black at the Triple Rock this evening. Too bad Frank isn't down with open taping. Well regardless, Lookbook is headlining the 501 Club tonight and that's the show I had my eye on. Thanks to Bender, the band and Station 4 for being cool with taping. Good seeing Mike again. The venue was like a brick sweat house. It had to have been over 100 degrees in there. mwY played Station 4 last June and ended the set short due to heat concerns. Heat or no heat they brought a 75 minute set that would rival any of the previous four shows I've seen as the best. We don't agree on all theological points but they will go down as one of my all time favorite bands nonetheless. Please support them by buying the official releases.

Gospel Gossip CD Release

Last Friday June 26th Gospel Gossip had the release party for their new album "Dreamland" at the Turf Club. The album is out on Guilt Ridden Pop. Lookbook, Black Horse (Brooklyn) and Mute Era all killed opening sets. All four of these bands are worth checking out. I was lured to Crunkmonster's BBQ at the Nomad the following day and took it easy Sunday so no torrenting was done. Keep an eye out for torrents.
