Phil is one of the best songwriters to have ever taken up residence in Minneapolis. He's also one of the few people who could get me out to a show having never heard of the other 3 bands. No offense intended to those bands. Please consider joining me at Hell's Kitchen this evening to celebrate the release of inBOIL's 2nd full length. The new album can be previewed on their Bandcamp page but limited edition handmade copies will be available at the show. Here's a couple of songs from Phil's solo set at the Blazedell House last Friday.

"Heidi Barton Stink is a transgender community organizer, activist and hip hop artist based in Minneapolis. While it’s true that those words don’t often go together, Heidi is developing a career around the idea that there can be both beauty and power in breaking molds, blazing trails and not being afraid to stand out. Whether rapping about queer liberation, music industry politics or the importance of love (or just engaging in some good old-fashioned raw, mic-ripping hip hop) her work is explicitly political, deeply personal,
often hilarious and always sincere."

The Chambermaids, The Deaf, Irkutsk (Lincoln, NE) and Hot Rash made this another Saturday night to spend at Hell's Kitchen. I had heard about The Deaf playing this show a few weeks before it got announced but I held it in and didn't say one single peep. Seeing the original line up for the first time in a couple of years is one of the things I looked forward to most during the month of July. Thanks to the bands and to Hell's Kitchen.

With a Gun For a Face, Bouncer Fighter and Hardcore Crayons opened up the evening. A serious bill. I was pretty disappointed when a bad optical cable cost me a Bloodnstuff set at The Nomad a couple of weeks ago but they sounded huge at Hell's Kitchen last night. Definitely one of the better bands I've seen come out of Minneapolis this year. I'm not going to post the full set because these songs are still unreleased and Ed was already cool enough to greenlight The Entry (07/09/11) being put up. Keep a lookout for the next Bloodnstuff show.
Usual HK set up with hypercardioids rolling and mild compression done in Sound Forge 10.

Benefit For A Totaled Van w/ STNNNG, Blind Shake & Buildings!

"On Sunday morning, April 15th we (STNNNG) got into an accident on an icy interstate 52 coming home from a show we played in Rochester, MN. The van rolled into the median but luckily didn't roll into oncoming traffic. The van was totaled. We only had liability on the van and now we owe a lot of money. Luckily we have great friends who are willing to play and help us pay down some of our debt. So come enjoy a great line-up of bands and help relieve some of our financial woes!" - STNNNG

Photos From The Hell's Kitchen Show...

Adam Bubolz has been hard at it for years making sure shows get visually documented around the Twin Cities. Fortunately he made it down to Hell's Kitchen on Saturday. The rest of his photos are available on reviler.org. Interested in all things relating to live music in MSP and beyond? Keep an eye on Reviler.
Thanks again to everyone for making it out! It was a great night and I was asked to book another show this fall.

At the end of May I spent 3 nights at The Loring Theater recording Heliotrope Eight. Part of the fun of these 3 nights included running back and forth to Hell's Kitchen to record off the soundboard. Thank you Justin. Friday night was no different. I knew Littlefoot was opening for Aby Wolf and Her Claws and didn't want to miss out. I caught the first few songs but had to miss this closer getting back to Heliotrope. When I played the recording back I was happy to find that it did indeed make the set list. Thanks to Littlefoot and especially to the HK staff for tolerating my frantic short breathness (sic) as I came barreling down the stairs multiple times a night.
Tip of the day: If someone forcefully demands money from you on Nicollet Mall at 11:30pm turn that jog into a sprint and politely say "Hey, I gotta hit record. Later!"

Empty's Tapes Exclusive: NEW City on the Make!

Those in attendance at Hell's Kitchen last Thursday were treated to a set of mostly new and unreleased City on the Make material. It's time for the next level and I for one am excited to hear these songs usher in summertime for the city I hold closet to my heart. But the hits don't stop there. Our friend Mischa has returned to Minneapolis after his extensive travels on the continent of Asia. Catch City on the Make next at The Nomad on Saturday June 4th with two guitarists and a bunch of new songs to keep Saturday night moving on the West Bank. Got a facespace? Thanks to Zach Boes for the mix and to MPLSSTPL for putting this show together.
