Heliotrope 9 @ The Lab Theater

"Flaneur Productions are once again proud to be presenting Heliotrope, an annual three-day festival featuring some of the area's most interesting and exciting underground music, for the ninth year running. Last year's stint at the beautiful Loring Theatre brought a wonderful change of venue, and while the closing of the Loring naturally saddens us, this situation gave Heliotrope an opportunity to move things to the warehouse district and take advantage of the posh confines of The Lab theatre on North First Street. Not only will this change allow the musicians to experience a new theatre, but the long-suffering merchandise table crew will finally get a chance to be inside the theatre on the mezzanine, rather than out in the lobby the entire time. We are very excited to be working with the fine people at The Lab.

This year's event will naturally see the return of some perennial mainstays (International Novelty Gamelan, Milo Fine, Thunderbolt Pagoda and Take Acre, to name a few), but will also feature a very large portion of new acts including the debut performance of Test Weapon (Jesse Petersen and Tim Glenn) black metal act Maledicere, minimal synth/coldwave acts CLAPS and The Night, industrial percussion merchants Prostate and a much-anticipated performance by the seminal St Paul power trio TVBC, featuring Paul Metzger on guitar, Freddy Votel of Skoal Kodiak on drums and the inhumanly skilled Adam Linz on bass."

Admission is $12.00 per day or $24.00 for a three-day pass. All ages welcome. Thursday/Friday/Saturday, 24-26 May 2012, 6:00PM-12:00 midnight each day. RSVP if you'd like.

Lighted is the Minneapolis based trio of John Marks, Jason Millard and Patrick Benjamin. I've only known about them for a year or so but now that I've seen them a few times I've promised myself to not miss a Lighted set if at all possible. Thanks to John for the permission to share. Thanks to Heliotrope and The Loring Theater for being the live event combination of the year.

Let me start by saying that in my very humble opinion Mother of Fire is one of the top 5 most talented bands actively playing Minneapolis right now. They played 12 dates in Europe last March as well as an Eastern US tour in support of their latest album. I wish someone had the money to pay for a huge national tour. I received word from Naomi the other day that it was cool to post this and believe me when I say it's a recording that I've been extremely excited to share. As much as I like my stage lip recording (that upfront sound is incredible!) as always PJ was on top of his game and had this 4 track balcony + soundboard mix done shortly after Heliotrope. I spent a month or so trying to discern song titles but it's my understanding that these songs are mostly new and as of yet untitled. So if you haven't heard any of the new Mother of Fire material by all means check out this brilliant recording. Thank you to Mother of Fire, PJ and Heliotrope. Special thanks to The Loring Theater for allowing us to document the festival.

When did Mother of Fire officially begin? Were there any projects or bands that you were involved in prior to this?

Jason: Officially, we began in December of 2007. Our first shows were billed as Blastoidea: an ancient extinct starfish-like creature. Then we changed it to Lambs for a few shows. All of this was with the drum machine. It wasn't until we hooked up with Andie that Mother of Fire came to us.

Naomi: County Z and Rotten Living, both anger and art punk violin/bass/drum trios, toured quite a bit from 2000-2005. Jason and I were in The Royal Flycatchers, where we put on elaborate performances involving, choreography, costumes, film: the works. We'd create a whole set and visual world employing a dozen or more artists and then perform the show once.

Andie played in a drum duo Jose Bove. Also, Hex (viola/tuba/drums) and now Myrrh. There have been many bands and projects for us all, too many to list.

Grain Belt is on Small Doses.

It's really thanks to The Loring Theater, the Heliotrope organizers and especially the bands that any of these recordings exist. More to come. Promise. See the rest of Adam's photos on reviler.org.

What's that? More Grain Belt you say? You can see them supporting the Maledicere album release show with Thunderbolt Pagoda and Blood Folke. A show to end all shows. Leave Only What Is Fit To Burn.

For the first two nights of Heliotrope I was down front and PJ was in the balcony running 4 tracks into the R44. This is his mix of Nomia from night one. It's definitely one of my personal favorite sets from the entire festival. Thank you to the bands, Heliotrope and The Loring Theater for allowing us to record.

7.5 Gigs of Heliotrope.

People have been asking what was recorded at Heliotrope Eight. 7.5 gigs of audio is sitting on a hard drive at an undisclosed location in South Minneapolis. I recorded everything but the Milo Fine & Charles Gillett set per Milo's request. Albert's set is good to go but I'm not sure when others will be posted. Right now I'm enjoying the summer and not spending as much time inside behind a computer. Would anyone like to hear the Joe McPhee & Chris Corsano set on vinyl? That may or may not happen. A Live Heliotrope 8 Compilation to accompany the complication put out by the Festival? That will happen. Please check back for further updates.

How many nights in a row can you record at The Loring Theater and Hell's Kitchen at the same time? Probably 3.

Thanks Justin!
