Last weekend I was given the opportunity to record one of my favorite local bands Where Astronauts Go To Hide in Chicago where they also happen to be considered local. I've got to say it was nice to get back to Chicago. A trip made much better spent with new friends and even newer friends. Thanks to Sam for keeping Harrigan's open for us Friday night and to Rachel for keeping us off the street. The Bottom Lounge is a nice venue conveniently by the train like much of everything else. From my experience the staff were great and the FOH was one of the most attentive FOHs I've encountered in a long while. Lacona, Glasko and Deadlands supported. Back to Harrigan's Saturday night. What a doozy. Someone once told me what happens in Chicago stays in Chicago. Thanks to Laura & Co. for keeping us inside four walls. Highlights were but not limited to Pequod's and oddly enough the ride back with Josh listening to classic jams from Grandaddy, Cursive, WHY? and many other great bands over the course of the 7 hour drive down darkened Midwestern highways.
Having already shared the stage with The Good Life, Land of Talk, Lissie, Old Canes, Murder By Death, An Horse, Akron/Family and The Show is the Rainbow to name a few 2010 is looking to be a great year for WAGTH. Keep an eye on their calendar. Later this month they will be playing shows in Cambridge, MA, Brooklyn, Philadelphia, Columbus and Chicago. Something else to be excited for is the launching of the official Where Astronauts Go To Hide website.

This should have been out a month ago but I wasn't ready to sit down with the recording. Tim played a big part in the keeping of my sanity this past year so when I say it was a honor to record this set I mean it. At the risk of breaking out my trusty bag of hyperbole it was an exorcism of sorts. Old Canes and Where Astronauts Go To Hide supported. If you missed any of the 3 sets you missed out.
I also recorded The Good Life at The Triple Rock in 2005 but at the time I was recording onto HiMD and Sony was brilliant enough to have this proprietary software SonicStage which in it's infancy was infamous for trapping recordings onto discs. For whatever reason you were only allowed to transfer a recording one time and if something went wrong for no reason than bam...no more Triple Rock '05 recording. Let's not live in the past, eh? Please enjoy a rare recording from The Good Life's December '09 four city midwest tour. The Good Life have releases available through Saddle Creek Records.

New Microphones!
Update for all my microphone geeks out there. I made the decision to upgrade to full sized condenser mics in mid '06. I decided to go with the Studio Project C4s. The first show I recorded with the C4s was Murder by Death, Langhorne Slim and Metal Hearts at the Triple Rock in May 2006. Many people agree that the C4s are some of the best mics to be had at the $300 price point. They always treated me right and I don't see any reason to get rid of them.
My Longfellow homeboy Dean has also been kind enough to loan me his MBHO (GmbH Mikrofonbau Haun) condensers on multiple occasions. The MBHO 603 As are some of the sexiest German mics out there and Dean certainly has a couple tons of good karma due. Recently I got the bug to upgrade mics. I started looking into Milab, a Swedish company. It happened that another great friend and local archivist David had a pair of the Milab VM-44 Link model. David gave me an unsolicited offer to run the VM-44s for a couple of weeks to see if I liked the sound.
I do indeed like the Milab sound! However, I got word of a pair of AKG 414B-xls's for sale out of IL. Around this same time my friends Where Astronauts Go To Hide invited me Chicago with them to record their show at The Bottom Lounge. I was able to meet the seller at the show and run the 414s for the first time. Either tonight or tomorrow you'll get to hear this recording.
Five switchable polar patterns (omnidirectional, wide cardioid, cardioid, hypercardioid, figure 8). MmMmm...

HAPPY NEW YEAR
May 2010 be better than 2009!
Live musics to follow from the likes of; The Good Life (holy shit?!), Old Canes, Where Astronauts Go to Hide, Face Candy, No Bird Sing, Kristoff Krane, Puppy Dogs & Ice Cream.
What I'm perhaps most excited about at the moment is NYE. Pretty sure I chose The Turf Club. Third Annual New Year's Eve Cover Night with Vampire Hands (Television), Leisure Birds (Monks), Daughters of the Sun (Jesus and Mary Chain), Marijuana Deathsquads (Brian Eno). Unfortunately Secret Language (Fleetwood Mac) was not recorded...it was however very Punk and uplifting. You missed out? It happens. Later on, at the dawn of the new year Finger Pressure's annual NYE set at Community Gardens was recorded into a little metal box. Let me just say that these 1s & 0s are far to good for the likes of MTV or top 40 radio. Be excited to check this out!

Unfortunately the first three songs of the set were cut from this release due to persistent static that was coming through the PA but later resolved. Other than that the set was toppity top. Brooklyn's Kittens Ablaze will be rolling through The 400 Bar on Tuesday November 3rd. Someone is excited for the opportunity to record them. Whoever put this show together knew what they were doing because the local support includes Where Astronauts Go To Hide, Dragons Power Up! and Colder in Moscow. On unrelated notes, Where Astronauts Go To Hide have a new video coming out and DPU! will be playing songs from their new album. 8PM doors and 5 bones to get in. $5!

This is honestly one of the best sets I have seen this year. I really look forward to seeing what else Pederson has in his guts. That's not to undersell the band whom really cinches everything together. I was still reeling in oblivion when this tape went down but I'm very happy to host it for anyone that wants to check it out. Don't miss out on "Amongst Friends" WAGTH's latest release. It's available through the band or on iTunes.
