Lookbook At First Avenue w/ Slapping Purses, Bight Club & Zoo Animail

Lookbook at First Ave. w/ Zoo Animal, BIGHT CLUB, & Slapping Purses from MPLS.TV on Vimeo.

Produced/shot/edited by Dan Huiting.
Additional camera operators: Adam Olson, Andre Durand and Chris Hadland.
Art by Matt Bardins and Hannah Haugberg.
Sound by John Coughlin.

A huge thank you to Dan, Lookbook, First Avenue (Conrad & Lee especially) and MPLS.TV for allowing Empty's Tapes to capture the 1s & 0s. All 4 sets were top notch from start to finish. The First Avenue staff ensured that everyone in attendance shared a wonderful night of local music. I also highly recommend checking out Zoo Animal, Bight Club and Slapping Purses if you're not already familiar with what they are up to. Hungry before of after the show? Check out The Depot, a newly opened restaurant owned and operated by First Avenue.

This was Mara's birthday party. Voytek and Class of 86 started off the evening. MC/VL played a set and DJed in the old bar as well. This was one of the funnest nights in recent memory and I'm really happy with the way this Prairie Sons tape turned out. Do not sleep on their record when it comes out! MC/VL @ The Old Bar

MC/VL
The Old Bar (The Triple Rock)
Minneapolis, MN
Sunday June 6th 2010

So Mara's birthday party featured MC/VL playing a set and spinning records in the old bar as well sets from Prairie Sons, Voytek and Class of 86 on the venue side. With the 414s set up in the other room I had to channel Lomax and MacGyver, a couple of long time heroes to get this recording made. Drew hooked me up with a rag that I folded up to cradle the Sony PCM-D50 as I pointed it to the speaker positioned above the door. The capabilities of the D50's internals are well known. This deck is extremely well made and the internals don't mess around. This was recorded at 24 bit 48 kHz. The dithering to 16 bit was done in Sound Forge Pro 10 and the 320kbps mp3 encoding was done using RazorLame.

Chastity Brown CD Release Show This Saturday

The Cedar
416 Cedar Ave S, Minneapolis MN 55454
Saturday June 12th
Doors at 7pm with music at 8pm
Tickets $10 in advance and $12 day of show

Looking for a surefire good time at one of the city's best venues this Saturday? If you're a fan of legendary acoustics you may want to consider joining Chastity Brown at The Cedar for the release of her band's new album High Noon Teeth, the follow up to 2009's Sankofa and 2007's Do The Best You Can. Chastity's stellar vocal capabilities are worth the price of admission along but her band certainly packs a punch with Michael X. (percussion), Adam Wozniak (of Tarlton, upright bass) and Nikki Schultz (backing vocals) in the lineup. Leave it to Chas to round out the bill with some top shelf support in Roma di Luna (duo) and No Bird Sing (acoustic). Roma di Luna duo sets can be rather rare these days and are not to be missed. As many times as I've seen them I myself have yet to witness an acoustic No Bird Sing set. I'm not even certain this has publicly happened before but with it going down at The Cedar it's sure to be special. With all three of these acts sharing the same bill it's going to be difficult for folks in attendance to take their attention away from the stage.

This one one in a series of shows to celebrate The Triple Rock's 10th Anniversary. Thanks to the band and the venue for us being able to hear this recording. Please support Naked Raygun by purchasing the official releases.

Missing shows already...

The plan was to record Marijuana Deathsquads at Nick & Eddie last night but instead of getting back into town at 6:30pm Wednesday I got back in at 6:00am on Thursday morning. See you next week I hope.

Stopped through Loring Park to say hello to some friends tonight. After getting word that Puppy Dogs & Ice Cream and Muja Messiah were playing The Triple Rock I headed for the train to record but feeling pretty drained I said hello to some folks and headed South.

Summer is here and sleep deprivation has set in. Be safe all. 24/7 keeps me safe.

Third time recording Sleepytime and they never disappoint. In my opinion they are one of the greatest bands of our time. Please support them by picking up their official releases. Most SGM and SGM-related releases are available through their online store. Thanks to the band and to The Triple Rock for allowing me to record. Guzzlemug (Minneapolis) wasn't messing around with their supporting set. They were also kind enough to load Sleepytime some gear for this mini-Midwest run.

The 04/13/09 set from The Triple Rock can be downloaded here. Life is good when Sleepytime Gorilla Museum stops through once a year.

Gastro Non Grata and Modern Café Present GastroWhirl 2!

Noon – 8:45
Modern Café Parking Lot
Free admission to all
$1 wristbands for 21+ to drink

"Gastro Non Grata and Modern Café have put aside their petty differences on reality TV programming to bring you GastroWhirl 2 : Muralize It –an entire day of local bands, cold beer, fine wine and a PBR art mural.

Modern Café will be open inside inside until 2pm, but the interesting stuff will be cooking on the parking lot. Jim and Phil are going to be building a BBQ pit out of cinder blocks then overload it with braising pans full of shouldered pork that will be torn into carnitas tacos with radish relish and a few select sides to help set the base for the day of debauchery.

We’re glad the guys at Fulton Beer will be on hand pouring Sweet Child of Vine IPA. Local beer made by local guys drank by local ladies and fellas, a thing of beauty. Also, Chris Brink of Bourget Imports will be on hand to dole out some summer whites and thirst quenching rose for those of you that stick your pinkies in the air.

Our friends at Pabst Blue Ribbon will be on hand all day pounding tall boys and creating an art mural on the empty wall of the parking lot, giving us some some whirl cred and leaving a lasting impression of what should prove to be an amazing show."

On the music end we’re biting off ten bands of varying flavor and intensity. Starting off with Sorry OK, Ogre Smash Death Boom, Claps, Communist Daughter, Chickadee Mountain Martyrs, Me and My Arrow, Amen and the Hell Yeahs, International Espionage, Cokewolf And Building Better Bombs.

Chris from Bourget will be pouring wine samples before Communist Daughter

Fulton Beer representatives will take the stage before Me and My Arrow pouring free samples."

Murder By Death Return To The Triple Rock

Hey hey, one of my favorite bands is stopping through town Wednesday and on top of that they return to The Triple Rock for the first time in two years. They delivered a great set the last time their were on the West Bank playing The Cabooze 10/04/09 with Gaslight Anthem, Frank Turner and The Loved Ones. As much fun as that show was I'm excited to see that they are playing The Triple Rock this time around, which is where we ended up after the show last October.

Murder By Death's most recent Triple Rock appearances include:

04/21/09 w/ Where Astronauts Go To Hide
05/04/08 w/ Dios and Gasoline Heart
05/28/06 w/ Langhorne Slim and Metal Hearts

MBD's new LP "Good Morning, Magpie" was released on April 6th, 2010 through Vagrant Records. It is available through Vagrant's online store as well as the band's official online store.

Ghostband @ The Entry

On Friday April 9th Ghostband supported Dosh at one of the three release shows he held that weekend for his new album "Tommy" (anticon).

I passed the .WAV file onto Mr. Jon Davis (Ghostband) so he could apply his own master tweaking. He then saw fit to upload the recording to the Audio Archive. Ghostband Live at 7th Street Entry 4/9/10 can be downloaded here. Much of Jon's other work is also available on The Archive including; Ghostband, Notes/Improvisation, Prince Feathers and Minneapolis Free Music Society. Much respect to Ron at The Entry.
