"We miss Coughs. Any band that could upstage the Slits and rep for Chicago on the noise-punk vanguard Load Records deserves to be pined for. But that nostalgia is fleeting with ex-members Anya Davidson and Carrie Vinarsky (plus Lovely Little Girls and Slutbarf alumni) carrying on the ferocious no-wave skronk as Cacaw. Residuals from Coughs' primitive Gypsy-caravan stomp (not unlike fellow Load-bearers Silver Daggers) still linger; but on last year's Get a Brain (Permanent Records), these locals thrash and dart like their alma maters rarely did — more conniption than clomp.
