Thanks to Lightning Bolt and The Triple Rock for allowing me to document this show. Please support Lightning Bolt by picking up the official releases. Plenty of them are available through Load Records. Thanks to endlessmug for the invaluable set list confirmation. We can only assume that 3, 5 & 7 are newer songs, perhaps without titles. Seawhores and Poop Smeared Mirror supported. I selfishly choose to attend this show instead of flying out Thursday evening to see family I haven't seen in over two years. This meant an early Friday morning flight on little sleep. Turns out the family understood and the sleep deprivation was a small sacrifice to make for this recording. I hope you enjoy. Here's to the TSA officials at MSP for not shakin' me down this time.

Scott Hull - bass (Gnomes of Zurich/Superball '63/Blackspot/Figures)
Charles Johnson - drums
Matt Johnson - drums
Come get your vocals. We're all really glad that Isaac, Stef and Travis didn't lose their minds at Nick & Eddie last night. There were many requests for this to be posted last night. I needed those 4 hours of sleep so I could wake up to some paper pushing and later in the day a "pizza & rootbeer float party" where I individually served clients 25 pizzas.

Puppys And Trains...Killing You Softly.
Puppies and Trains are one of the greatest Rock n' Roll bands in the in the seven county metro area. Probably kind of surprised you haven't seen them around town? Well, they don't really believe in "websites" and "promotion" and "social networking" et cetera. Puppies and Trains is Kermit and Math P. from Superhopper along with Drummer Jimmy. This was the Double Bird tour kick off show which also featured top-shelf sets from Bird Sounds and Voytek. Jam city with the AKG 414's in the spot at The Turf Club (07/22/10).

"We miss Coughs. Any band that could upstage the Slits and rep for Chicago on the noise-punk vanguard Load Records deserves to be pined for. But that nostalgia is fleeting with ex-members Anya Davidson and Carrie Vinarsky (plus Lovely Little Girls and Slutbarf alumni) carrying on the ferocious no-wave skronk as Cacaw. Residuals from Coughs' primitive Gypsy-caravan stomp (not unlike fellow Load-bearers Silver Daggers) still linger; but on last year's Get a Brain (Permanent Records), these locals thrash and dart like their alma maters rarely did — more conniption than clomp. Live, the guitar dive-bombs and vocal piercings are pure scorched earth." -Stephen Gossett, Flavorpill

Active Torrents On The Traders' Den.
Once I get moved I'd like to start offering FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) sets on The Traders'Den again. 320kbps mp3 sets will still be available. I started seeding shows there in 2004. Here's a list of all 285 torrents, most of but not all shows recorded by me...I did post some shows recorded by friends.
Basically, FLAC is tops and iPods are lame. If you're down with the file size I think you can probably even play FLAC on iPods now? Going through the list here are the shows that have people still actively seeding the torrent. Much respect to my homie Mike for single-handedly keeping most of these alive:

Sorry Langhorne...
After missing the 2005(?) show with Lucero I made sure I caught Langhorne Slim a few times at The Triple Rock between 2006 and 2007. Then his agent started booking at The 400. For fear of being scolded for trying to record at The 400 I stayed home missing what I'm sure were great shows. I got way excited for The Varsity show and it went on the calendar immediately. Unfortunately after hemorrhaging a good amount of cash and sleep on this last 5 night run I think I'll be sitting this one out. Joel, where you at old friend? Please tell me you'll make it out. You remember the 05/28/06 gig with Slim, Metal Hearts and Murder by Death? Ha Ha Tonka sure did bring it last May...here's that recording.

No One Told Me Desaparecidos Were REUNITING...
$610 for a flight down to Omaha on Saturday returning on Sunday? I'm gutted! Apparently this was announced on July 6th. I'm sure plane tickets could have been had for cheaper 20 days ago. For more information on the Desaparecidos reunion you can check the facespace. It is SOLD OUT. I guess spending a ton of money to record an outdoors show would likely end up in disappointment anyways. I must say that it is for a good cause though. If this was going on indoors at The Slowdown I might just have to sell an organ.
Time: July 31 at 5:00pm - August 1 at 2:00am
Location: Downtown Benson - Omaha, NE
Come out and support the Concert for Equality. All proceeds go to the ACLU Nebraska's effort to repeal Fremont's Anti-Immigrant Law. We finally have the details for this show worked out. Music is now starting both inside and outside at 5pm. The regular tickets can get you into both places (unless The Waiting Room is over capacity) until 10pm. At 10pm, about the time Desapare...cidos play outside, we will clear out The Waiting Room. After the outside show is done at 11pm, those with the deluxe tickets will be allowed back in to The Waiting Room for more performances. We will post a formal schedule shortly, but here's a list of everybody playing: Desaparecidos, Cursive, Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, Bright Eyes, Lullaby For The Working Class, FATHR^, The Envy Corps, David Dondero, The So-So Sailors, Conchance, Simon Joyner, Flowers Forever, and Vago. It's going to be a great day and thanks to everybody for supporting!!!

PostScript...
1) The 03/20/05 Silkworm recording is receiving a Pro Tools massage. I hope to have that posted within the next week or two.
2) I was not able to attend Clipd Beaks, Haunted House, Skoal Kodiak & Whitesand/Badlands last Saturday but I was able to loan some gear to a friend. Word is that "everything" was recorded via the ceiling mounted mic (Rode NT4?) at The Turf Club. I'll be getting the deck back tonight to see how things turned out.

Please support the bands by picking up the official releases. Lots of good shows coming up at The Entry so peep the calendar. After Tyler told me that the Sarah Johnson set was one song I might offer all three sets untracked and in the same post. If this annoys you email me and let me know.

I'm Out Of Town This Weekend But You're Not...
I haven't seen my Grandparents in over 2 years and sometimes it eats at me because they helped raise us while mom was working the long hours needed to afford us with certain opportunities in life. While many good friends are dead, in jail or otherwise absent from society I get to document musics that I care about and that likely wouldn't have been so if I hadn't come from an outstanding family of sturdy Midwestern stock. Yes, while I'm heading deep into prairie country to say Thank You those in town should be privy to these events...
Friday July 16th:

Saturday July 17th:

Remembering Michael Dahlquist (12/22/65 - 07/14/05)
When I walked into The Triple Rock to record Silkworm 5 years ago I obviously had no idea that Michael would be dead less than four months later. Being that we didn't know this at the time everyone I talked to had a blast at the show. Malachi Constant and Maps of Norway supported. I can remember standing on the corner of 7th & Cedar as people filed out of The Triple Rock. For lack of a better word there was some kind of cheer bustling through the air and everyone was wearing a smile. Those close to Michael Dahlquist and Silkworm were no longer smiling on July 14th 2005 when it was reported that Michael along with his friends Douglas Meis and John Glick were killed when Jeanette Sliwinski intentionally crashed her car into theirs in an attempt to commit suicide. At this point I'm not going to let my emotions get the better of me but Sliwinski was paroled October 2nd 2008 and completed probation on October 2nd 2009 which hardly seems just.
Back to being happy I was able to attend this show and walk away with a recording of it. It does sound pretty nice considering the equipment and techniques a young Empty was using 5 years ago. With that said I wanted to take a second look at the master tape before releasing the full set. This will happen soon but for now please enjoy the following tracks.
Silkworm - Don't Look Back (03/20/05)
Silkworm - Raging Bull (03/20/05)

Fresh Links? Yes It's Time.
Not quite ready to move to a .com yet (almost) but new sections on the blog include...
Art & Design
Cinematography
Photography
The Record Labels list will also focus more on local DIY labels. I'm also going to add to the Local Blogs section. Getting all of the people I support linked to on here is a work in progress so if you don't see a link to your skillz don't get too peeved because more will be added. If you would like to be added or have any recommendations (trying to keep it local) send me an email anytime.
See you around town,
John

Nomia (Minneapolis) and Sweet Cobra (Chicago) supported. Thank you to Russian Circles and The Triple Rock for allowing me to record all of these shows for the past four years. Thanks to Zach for another sick mix. Thanks JL. I've seen Russian Circles a handful of times but the one set I never released due to it being a st3@lth affair was Tempe, AZ '06 with The Velvet Teen, P.O.S. and Minus the Bear. That business was pretty crazy. I don't think Stef was expecting to see me in the desert. A pretty young lady accompanied me to the show but we left before Minus the Bear to check out the pool. Gone are the salad days.

Have you heard? Nomia is back. There was a last minute show with Guzzlemug at the Hexagon last April, then a couple shows in May and a couple more in June. I unfortunately missed the June 17th show with Empires but I was able to catch up with them supporting Russian Circles and Sweet Cobra. Some people may remember the 6/23/07 tape also recorded at The Triple Rock. It's still available here on the Live Music Archive. While you're at the Archive you may also want to check out the 6/28/10 In-studio Nomia recorded for Nowlikephotographs which airs on Radio K Monday nights at 8-10pm CST. Thanks to Nomia and The Triple Rock for allowing me to record. Stay tuned for the Russian Circles set.

That West Bank Apartment Should Have Been Mine.
The folks running the WBSC have something great going on and I encourage you to keep an eye on their calendar. You may sweat out a few ghosts while there but you'll enjoy yourself while doing so. After getting set up I had to run some compact discs down to Chris at The Triple Rock and happened to run into Mr. Salinas, curator of your favorite Funk/Soul/Blues dance night Hot Pants as well as many other parties around town. Always good running into this fellow. Back at the WBSC the potluck was in full swing and sets had begun. For a little taste of The Somethin' Else #2 I wanted to share Makr's set (Live from the West Bank Social Center 07/09/10). If you get your stuff in order you can catch him again tonight at the Whitesand/Bandlands LP Release Show with Moonstone and Visions of Christ (who also played WBSC). So thank you to Jon Davis, The West Bank Social Center and everyone who performed last night.
It was at this particular point in the evening where I chose to fail Mother of Fire. Then again you don't need some shoddy live two track recording from The Bedlam to discover this band. The new LP is available through Destijl Recs. It wasn't time to retire yet so I asked Fish to head to Memory Lanes. Power of 2 had a few songs left and I rather enjoyed what I caught. I had stopped through for The Yoleus and they did not disappoint.
With 30 minutes left before the clock struck 2:00am it was time to see what was shakin' at the Hexagon. I walked straight into a Bight Club set which was a pleasant surprise. It made me recall the first time I saw Jeremy at The Suburban World Theatre in April '07. Call number two to 24/7 and to all a good night.

Thank you to Why?, Snake and First Avenue for allowing me to document this show. Thanks to Zach for putting his time into the mix. A year and a half ago I was in a pretty dark place but "Alopecia" scooped me up out of the gutter and dusted me off. I made it back to the green room to thank Yoni for the heart medicine. He thanked me for all of the recording and that meant a lot. Broder and Erickson do Minneapolis proud. Dosh and Jeremy Ylvisaker contributed gear for the show. Hopefully you didn't miss Deerhoof or Southeast Engine.
