The Chambermaids, The Deaf, Irkutsk (Lincoln, NE) and Hot Rash made this another Saturday night to spend at Hell's Kitchen. I had heard about The Deaf playing this show a few weeks before it got announced but I held it in and didn't say one single peep. Seeing the original line up for the first time in a couple of years is one of the things I looked forward to most during the month of July. Thanks to the bands and to Hell's Kitchen.

Muddy Waters: Brunch Edition

I was skeptical after my first visit but I was hooked by the second. Yes, most weekend mornings it's likely that you'll find me at Muddy Waters. By now I'm sure most everyone knows that Muddy's moved into a new location at 29th & Lyndale. Having this place within walking distance is a serious score. I'm in the process of working my way down the menu.


$6.50 for one of the best breakfasts in town. Nice and simple. Please, try the home fries.

Went with sausage in the burrito. Tops.

Some kind of red chile deliciousness coats the chilaquiles. I'm not typically a fan of over easy eggs but damn...it completely works here.

The breakfast sandwich is the true sleeper at Muddy's brunch. It's on the wall by the coffee bar with interchangeable bread, protein and cheese options. Anyone familiar with the East Lake Taquería Crawl? Well I'm about to embark on a Muddy Waters Breakfast Sandwich Crawl because at $4.50 it's a steal. Ham & cheddar croissant above.

You know what goes well with all of the above? Yep.

With a Gun For a Face, Bouncer Fighter and Hardcore Crayons opened up the evening. A serious bill. I was pretty disappointed when a bad optical cable cost me a Bloodnstuff set at The Nomad a couple of weeks ago but they sounded huge at Hell's Kitchen last night. Definitely one of the better bands I've seen come out of Minneapolis this year. I'm not going to post the full set because these songs are still unreleased and Ed was already cool enough to greenlight The Entry (07/09/11) being put up. Keep a lookout for the next Bloodnstuff show.

I met up with Eric to record the release for his latest album New Hub City. Definitely glad I did because it was a great time. Beautiful early Friday evening with everyone either heading home or just out to enjoy the weather. An hour and 45 minutes of material was recorded so consider this a promo for a possible live release down the road. Got to Stevens Square Park just after 2:30. Humid. Sticky. It eventually got a little bit better. Stop to talk with Buns at her booth for a minute before heading over to the "Lower" stage. I saw my friend Nikki setting up but had no idea she would be there. "Nikki, which band are you playing in today?" - "The Discord Syndicate! We go on at 3." Jesus, that girl can sing. I wasn't familiar with anyone else in the band but they were tight and I would definitely check them out again. I knew Nice Purse was on next at the "Upper" stage so with little to no break down I carried my gear through the park. I'm always up for a Nice Purse set. I started to somewhat worry about getting back (a whole 500 feet?) for Bouncer Fighter. No worries with the help of the always awesome J.Castro. Bouncer Fighter of course brought it. So much so that they blew a circuit. Nightosaur is next? Yes, yes of course I'm recording Nightosaur. Thanks to the Red Hot Art Festival for the gorgeous Saturday afternoon.

During all of the sunny park action I found time to stop my the La Loma stand for a Oaxacan tamale which consisted of "spicy chicken" wrapped in a banana leaf instead of the traditional corn husk. Very delicious and definitely recommended if you're into pollo or tamales.

It's been a while since we've done a Flyer of the Week, and this one was just too good to let pass by. The flyer, for an Empty's Tapes showcase this Saturday at Hell's Kitchen, was illustrated by Brian Downs. Downs has a Flickr page where you can see a large sampling of his other posters, all of which deserve to be in the Flyer of the Week Hall of Fame.

Radical Cemetery Tape Release at XY&Z Tonight!

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

Radical Cemetery is a band comprised of three original members Aaron Anderson, Fletcher Barnhill, and Eric Carlson and more recently Derek Maxwell, who assimilated into the group's structure as an auxiliary multi-instrumentalist. Our collaborative process is equilateral and we trust each other to make changes in mind of the project's ongoing progression, like practicing mistakes or mutations in a controlled lab environment. The music we create draws cues from points in experimental and improvisational musics, stoner metal, various beats and hip hop production techniques, dub, and anything else that sonically maintains a thick sound.

Similar concerns are echoed in our artistic practices. Anderson and Carlson, founders of Hardland/Heartland, collaboratively produce books, videos, drawings and installations investigating ideas of cultural creativity, human interaction, and friendship through the progression of a multi-disciplinary practice. Barnhill is both culinary wonder and a functioning operator of BABY Skateboards, where he works to design, hand cut and embellish each series of boards created with intellectually dense wordplay and seemingly naive graphics. Maxwell, who will be described as a world traveler, is simply passing through on a personal journey away from it all. One should also understand that we believe all these endeavors and paths to be intertwined and never ending positive forces propelling us through life and continuing on forever.

"These guys spent so much time in the basement last year that their eyes have begun a Darwinian reduction into mole-like infra-optic all-in-one facial sensory organs. Our soon-to-be albino brethren forsee the near-apocalyptic near-future on their new cassette "N.N.E.", where we're a few straggling survivors gathered around a makeshift generator behind a blown up loading dock. The Bloody Gastro After Show in The Entry featured sets from Blood Sweat and Beards, Total Fucking Blood and Bloodnstuff. Brought into The Entry were the delicious left overs from Gastro Non Grata's Raconteur Rendezvous 2. Jeff appeared with this gigantic container of giardiniera and right then I reached an even higher level of respect for the man. The combination of short rib chili with giardiniera and cheese sauce was pretty amazing. Thanks to Gastro Non Grata, Matty and everyone else working The Entry that night.
