Blood Folke and The Night played Perish07. Perish is every third Thursday of the month at The Kitty Cat Klub. This was Blood Folke's debut public performance? Several people in the room were confused by the notion of this immediately after the band finished. The tightness and precision with which they played suggested they had been booking shows for some time now. The week proceeding the show I was telling people that this was the best local set I had seen all year. A month and a half later that statement still holds true. Thanks to the band and the KCK for allowing this recording to happen. Thanks to J.M. for all of his efforts in post.

Jack Torrey - "Today Is A Sad Day (To Be You)"
Meg Ashling - "I Circle Around"

(Right Click & Save Link As on PC or Control + Click on Mac)

The first time I ran into Jack Torrey and Meg Ashling was at The 400 Bar sometime in 2008. I meant to get a recording up sooner but it wasn't until recently that I was able to catch back up with them and The Great Confinement supporting Gabe Barnett & the Big House Jug Band at Acadia Cafe. Don't get me wrong, the Acadia is a fine establishment that I frequent often for food and drink but it's not the greatest room for live recording. I abandoned the room recordings in a hurry in favor of posting these two tracks from the soundboard tapes. Anyways, it's nice to see Meg is playing shows again and be sure to check out Jack's group The Cactus Blossoms linked above. They've been booking a lot of shows around town lately.

Keep an eye out for Media-Octopus.com a newly formed video production company by Mo McNichols. Mo will be producing videos for bands both inside and outside of the Twin Cities so expect prime footage from both local and national acts.

Empty's Tapes is always happy to partner with video colleagues in regards to external audio. A couple of recent examples are Humanda and Screamin' Cyn-Cyn and the Pons from their March 5th show at The Triple Rock. Full audio of the Humanda set is available here.

"In the Aeroplane Over the Sea"

Site | Facebook | Twitter | iTunes

This song has always stayed with me over the years. Many of Mangum's words haunt me in the best possible way. Ever since the first time I heard it I've been pretty blown away by the treatment Channy's voice gives this song. I highly recommend checking out Roma di Luna's official recording which is available on 2007's Find Your Way Home. Thank you to the band and to The Cedar for always allowing me to record the shows. The Cedar is definitely the venue to see this band.

Note: This was a 4 piece Roma di Luna set with Channy Casselle, Alexei Casselle, Ryan Lovan (drums) and Adam Hulbert (bass). Roma di Luna supported Joan as Police Woman.

The Flying Dorito Brothers - "Older Guys"
The Flying Dorito Brothers - "Hot Burrito #1"

Cause installed a new PA system last Monday so I was certainly interested in checking out the first show with it in use. I've never been a huge fan of post-'60s Country but The Flying Dorito Brothers are legit and they do their forefathers justice in my book. Word is this was their 3rd ever show. Night Moves and The Burglars supported. Crowds in this room are always a little but that's the nature of the beast and it was a fun night nonetheless.

Record Store Day 2011

Many deals can be had at these establishments today:

Hymie's Records
Roadrunner Records
Yeti Records
Extreme Noise Records
Cheapo
Electric Fetus
Treehouse Records
Fifth Element
Down in the Valley

Just transferred 3 plus gigs of recordings from earlier in the week. Unfortunately no time to post anything before heading down to Hymie's but hopefully Sunday can be a catch up day. It's been too long since I've had Blue Moon coffee so that's sounding pretty delicious right now.

Speaking of delicious, this is an IMPORTANT NOTIFICATION that Psycho Suzi's offers Giardiniera as a pizza topping. Tip of the day: Get it to go.

An Update If You Feel Like Reading One.

On Monday Cause had their new PA System installed and ran it for the first time Tuesday night. Apologies to my birthday homies at Honey but I wanted to keep it close and check out this new PA. The Flying Dorito Brothers, The Burglars and Night Moves were all recorded. I'm excited to post some tracks from The Flying Dorito Brothers set in particular.

Wednesday morning I noticed CLAPS were playing The Entry that night. I shot Matt a text to see if he was mixing sound and indeed he was. The ante was then upped and the CLAPS set made the last minute show decision more than worth it.

Woke up in a haze Thursday morning but I knew I had to haul gear to work to record a flute + piano recital at Augsburg at 7pm. Stopped into The Triple Rock on my way to find out that they nixed the buffalo wings from the menu?! The veggie wings are still available but I had to go with chicken tenders and buffalo sauce to halt the craving. Cheers Billy. Headed over to the venue side for a minute on my way out and was able to catch some of the Subhumans. They were in good hands with Tom behind the board.

The recital was pretty legit. Kou killed it and I recognized Tom on piano from the McPhail vocal opera a few weekends ago. Hooked up with Sam and crossed the 94 walking bridge to get to Franklin. He didn't have to twist my arm when he suggested stopping into Tracy's, it had been a while. Unfortunately it was not Tuesday Wing Night but oh well. The benefit show for Lugosi at the Hexagon was a great time and I hope they raised a lot of money. The vegan samoas were delicious and sorry Harris but I let some girl have the fondue pot. After a quick stop at the TFATT house Dave was kind enough to 55408 so I didn't have to spend 48 hours away from the queen bed.

Pizza date in Northeast or The Martyr's new solidified line up at The Nomad? Sorry Luc, pizza date is winning but I will try to make it over to the West Bank. If you're into it you should consider checking out this show tonight...

The Nomad World Pub
Friday 4/15
9pm | $5?

The Chickadee Mountain Martyrs
Dangerous Ponies (7 piece band from Philly)
Avenpitch
In the Morning
Dance Band

Saturday should be good. I'm recording all of the indoors music at Hymie's Record Store Day from 11am to 7pm. Cadillac has recording the outdoor stage covered. Then I might try to get a nap in before Disasteratti, Voytek, Nightosaur and White Mischief at Hell's Kitchen later that night.

Peace & Serenity in 2012,

-J

I know I mentioned this a few days ago but just a quick heads up for tonight. Lugosi isn't my dog but he's awesome nonetheless. Last February he was hit by a snow plow and had to have one of his legs amputated. He's had ongoing health problems every since including a surgery to check on an obstruction in his intestine. The medical bills are in the thousands at this point and we just want to help get some of those paid down. I know what you're thinking though, "He's just a dog. Nuclear war is coming so just put him down and he'll be better off right?" NO. Tonight we help Lugosi.

There's certainly stuff I'm forgetting. Still some sets from February/March that I wanted to post. Definitely need to find time to go back and dig through 2010 and if you notice the first few entries I plan to start going back even further than that. I'm trying to take it somewhat easy these first couple weeks of April in an effort to save funds for San Francisco but now that the weather is awesome I still find myself going out even if it's not to a show so I'm not sure how that's going to work. Please stay tuned if you feel like it.

Spring 2011

Been taking it easy since the OFF! show for no real reason. I meant to make it to gleb's the following night to record The Funeral And The Twilight but I got derailed by Mere's birthday party. It was completely worth it though. I could stand to make more time for friends and less time for shows, especially now that weather is cooperating again. Speaking of the 4/4 TFATT show though, I heard the John Calvin set was something to see. Next time. Took my Step Dad down to Hell's Kitchen on Saturday night for Yonkers and the Shake, Spider John Koerner & Tony Glover, Paul Metzger and Curtis A & the Jerks of Fate. We both had a great time and that meant a lot to me.

Wondering where to catch the good music around town tonight? I'd highly recommend Holyoke and Buildings at Honey. Word is Buildings goes on at 10pm. I've never been to Honey but it's on Hennepin & 2nd street NE just across the bridge.

I usually try not to get too spammy about shows but if you're not busy this Thursday it would mean a lot if people could stop down to the Hexagon. My friend Linday's (The Great Confinement) little Boston Terrier Lugosi got hit by a snow plow last winter and lost one of his legs. He's had ongoing health issues every since including an obstruction in his intestines making it difficult for him to keep food down. The Lugosi Benefit includes a silent auction, along with performances by Phantom Tails, The Great Confinement, The Funeral And The Twilight and Hollow Boys.

On a lighter note, let's get the Barbecues going yeah? See you in the backyard.

Night 5 (Back to home base).

Been doing a little recording this week and haven't slowed down much since Wednesday. I'm reporting back to home base tonight to record Keith Morris' (Circle Jerks/Black Flag) new band OFF! (Los Angeles) at The Triple Rock. The OFF! roster features Burning Brides frontman Dimitri Coats, Redd Kross bassist Steven Shane McDonald, and Rocket From The Crypt/Hot Snakes drummer Mario Rubalcaba. Earlier in the week I contacted OFF! to see if I could obtain permission to record. I sent an email at 12:09PM and at 12:58PM I received a simple "Go for it" so thanks to whoever moderates the band's official email account. I will try not to disappoint.

Trash Talk (Sacramento) is also on the bill but you know what I've really been looking forward to? Seeing Much Worse again. My vote for best hardcore punk band actively playing Minneapolis right now and there are many a punk band here.

Monday night, Monday night...hmm. The Funeral and The Twilight have a show at Gleb's. Email me for the address.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor @ The Metro (Both Nights)

Somewhere back here I was contemplating a quick trip to Chicago to record one of the Godspeed You! Black Emperor shows. Well, that didn't happen but my friend Brian was a frickin' champ and made it out both nights. Brian, I raise my glass to you sir. It should be noted that GY!BE has an Open Recording Policy that excludes soundboard access. They have also given people permission to upload recordings to The Live Music Archive. Astronautalis "The Wondersmith And His Sons" @ The Triple Rock

Hands down the best hip hop show I've seen all year and it's going to take quite a lot to rival it. Honestly, it's a bit embarrassing that in 2011 I have somehow managed to miss all of the previous 5 or 6 Astronautalis sets in Minneapolis. What gives? I got deep into some Makers and never got around to asking Andy if it was cool to circulate the whole set so I'm only going to post this one track for now. The new album is going to be a freight train. Astronautalis has been on tour with Sims and The Triple Rock was SOLD OUT Friday night. MaLLy got it going. Thanks to Andy for being cool with me recording. What's this Four Fists (Astronautalis & P.O.S.) business from SXSW? That sounds dangerous.

Should have been "Picked to Click" but didn't have the necessary popular sway of radio play and marketing to make it happen? It's a damn shame really. Actually, it looks like they were 5 votes out. Why am I talking about Picked to Click?

Nice Purse - "Put It On Me" @ The Nomad

Nice Purse - "Put It On Me" Live At The Nomad (03/03/11)

I was standing there minding my own business at The Nomad last Thursday and all of the sudden this song smacked me in the mouth. Like some twisted time machine I was taken back to revisit the sweetest of teenage breakups. Oh yes, the salad days.

The last time I saw Nice Purse they were going on in the 4th slot of the Sleeping in the Aviary tour kickoff show in early January. By that point I was doing alright and not really paying attention. I need to pay a little more attention. This was the first night of the Teenage Moods March miniseries.

With 3 shows that I wanted to attend Friday I couldn't be swayed from recording the Wizards Are Real LP Release Show. Even though it's walking distance from the house it took me a while to warm up to Cause for various reasons but I'm actually starting to like the place. This recording reminded me of how clean this room can sound and that's due in no small part to Ross, the front of house engineer. I'm going to suggest contacting the band directly to purchase a copy. It should also be available in most of the local record stores as well. Seymore Saves the World, Dragons Power Up! and National Bird supported.

HeatdeatH and Ben Butler & Mousepad supported Deerhoof. I wish I could have caught Ben and the legendary Deerhoof but after HeatdeatH I had to break down and head to The Kitty Cat Klub for Perish. Many thanks to Broder and The Triple Rock.

HeatdeatH? "It is getting worse. Day by day. The coming century, will be one of ecological disaster and resource wars; technological improvements that will be promptly turned into instruments of destruction. Humans are horribly destructive creatures. The urge to save humanity is a false front for the urge to rule. The future is so oppressively grim, violent, foreign and insipid, that even a romance with nihilism seems way too quaint and inappropriate of a response. With HeatdeatH, Andrew Broder and Tim Glenn are flirting with the dire circumstances of the human condition in the abstract. The two tracks on this black slab of vinyl are thematically linked in sound, structure and mood. The music evokes a place unpleasant and unbearable. ' One of the things that really appealed to me about a lot of the real intense insane suicidal black metal is that sense of staring this kind of dark, cruel reality, whatever you're dealing with, in the face and accepting it, and having it be a thing of beauty rather than avoiding difficult subject matter. The term "heavy music" stems from my way of categorizing music like that as separate from music that can be casual and come and go and not make an impact on your life.' Andrew Boder HeatdeatH is a duo from Minnesota that conjures up sound with guitars, drums and machines. Musically informed by Black Metal, Free Jazz, Electronic Composition, four track recording and pretty shit, their sound constantly unfolds and overlaps, searching melodically with great sadness and beauty, while overwhelmingly abrasive and terrifying all at once. HeatdeatH is the Void, Infinite Cosmic Despair, and the end of consciousness." - conspiracyrecords.com

Recordings from Cadette, Nice Purse and Vacation Dad possibly coming soon.

For the record, I asked Gordon if he wanted me to post 2 or 3 tracks versus the whole set and he said "Nah, put it all up." So please thank the man with a hug, handshake or cd purchase when you see him.

I Know This Is Hard To Believe But...

I'll be wandering the streets of the West Bank tonight. Well, one street in particular. We can always look forward to an early start at The Cedar Cultural Center. I mean that in the best way possible because it allows one to take in other soirees. The Pines and Roma di Luna (duo) take the stage at 8pm with doors being at 7. The Pines are a local and not so local treasure. Duo sets are never to be missed, especially when they can be taken in in this capacity. Speaking of soirees why don't we just head next door to Palmer's after The Cedar drops the lights? It's no secret that I back both of the bands on this evening's bill but let me be honest here. Saturday night at Palmer's with El Le Faunt El Le Faunt & His Traveling Circus and The Chickadee Mountain Martyrs providing the soundtrack? Even if you don't know what the I'm talking about a better evening won't be had by many in this city. BUT it doesn't have to end or even begin there! Across the street and a few doors down for a mere $5 you can enjoy the warmth of The Triple Rock along with the music of Humanda, Screamin' Cyn Cyn and the Pons, Fort Wilson Riot and Speed's the Name. In fact, I'm sure to be making at least a few trips back and forth to press record/stop etc.

It was an honor to have so many top shelf bands play the "birthday show." A huge thanks to The Chickadee Mountain Martyrs, Sleeping in the Aviary, Bird Sounds and Strong Bones. Of course I wanted this to go down at one of my favorite haunts so a giant cyber bear hug to Kermit for helping to make that possible. Thank you to anyone who stopped down to check it out as well.

I have no problem in saying that The Chickadee Mountain Martyrs' Comeuppance is one of the best records to come out of Minneapolis in the past few years. If you're at all curious about checking it out it's available on The Martyrs' bandcamp page. It should also be noted that this wasn't just any ole Martyrs set. Yes. Nikki Grossman, OG member of the Martyrs took the stage on violin and vocals. If I'm not mistaken this has not happened since.

A perfect recording to release on a snowed in day like today. It's been on repeat for a couple of hours up here in the batcave. I love COTE. Their 7 track s/t debut is highly recommended and is available on the bandcamp page. The Falcon Arrow and White Mischief sets have been posted as well. Delta Lyrae is to follow. Thanks to the bands and to Hell's Kitchen for allowing me to record.

Happy Is The New Sad.

Last night I hit The Triple Rock to capture HeatdeatH's set. They left many a body in their wake. I know in my heart that Deerhoof was amazing but I needed to keep moving on to The Kitty Cat Klub for Perish06. Ones and zeros of the Hollow Boys debut exist...so glad I caught that. Mesa Pizza: 1 slice Chicken Pot Pie & 1 slice Gyro. Good friends make life easier. My contacts and I slept on Ben's couch. Over and out.

EmptysTapes.com: Soon.

After having collected numerous recordings from my favorite bands starting in 1999 when I got to college I began recording my own shows in 2004. I didn't register this blog until 2006 but if you look over to the right at the bottom of the "Blog Archive" you'll see I didn't start actively posting recordings here until 2007. Up to that point I was content with circulating shows on various live recording BitTorrent trackers, primarily The Traders' Den. Well, no more cumbersome blog URL. I didn't buy the emptystapes.com domain until sometime in 2009 but yes, finally only one URL will be needed to find this place. No more dot blogspot dot com dot yatta yatta.

What's even more exciting than a simple URL redirect that should have happened years ago? Someone with a massive amount of talent who many of you know has agreed to help me finally start designing a site so the move to the .com can be made once and for all.
