Now we got a band that even I've been sleeping on. After recording them earlier in the month at The Turf Club there was no way I was going to miss a collaboration with Gastro Non Grata at one of my favorite establishments. How about all of the amazing events that Gastro Non Grata hosts around town? 4onthefloor's 16 track debut is available on iTunes and Amazon or at shows. The vinyl will be released April 2nd at The Triple Rock Social Club.

Guante rises above his contemporaries no matter want he's getting into that particular day. A couple of years ago when Guante & Big Cats! joined forces I knew it meant trouble for those who had gotten used to being at the top, whatever that means these days. If you're not familiar with Big Cats! production you can get familiar at bigcatsbeats.com. Thanks to The Fine Line for being cool with me recording.

Douchelords And The Affliction Spring Collection: Saturday Night Downtown

All snide hyperbole aside last night was well worth the effort. With a half dozen choice shows to attend last night I devised a plan to keep it Downtown for maximum documentation. Guante & Big Cats! and Kristoff Krane were playing the Fine Line as part of Botzy's annual The Best Love Free is show. I was glad I got down to the Warehouse District in time to catch the Wesley Opus & Botzy set. Be sure to check them out if you haven't. No slight intended to Soulcrate Music or Culture Cry Wolf but after Guante & Big Cats! left the stage in smoldering ashes it was time to head to Hell's Kitchen aka the Downtown safe house.

Got downstairs just in time to hear the last couple Ill Chemistry numbers. I've been a supporter of Desdemona and Carnage for years but unfortunately it's impossible to capture all of the 1s and 0s in this city we love. I knew I had seen Wizards Are Real once before at The Turf Club but the details of that evening were foggy at best. I was really impressed with their set and would definitely enjoy seeing them again. They delivered a much needed jazz cut wormhole into the end of the night. And then now? The Book of Right On, the band that drew me in. A band whom if you've poked around this site for the past six to thirty six months you know comes highly endorsed. Recordings to follow.

Puppy Dogs and Ice Cream - "Ashes to Afterbirth"

Puppy Dogs and Ice Cream - "Ashes to Afterbirth" (10/31/09)

On Saturday October 31st, 2009 Puppy Dogs and Ice Cream, a group that featured Austin Dufault on production with Micheal Larsen, Kristoff Krane and Mike Schank on vocals took the stage at The Turf Club for their live debut. They only played about six shows and I was able to record three of them. Some people may have heard the Audience version of this track but I gave Mikey the master recordings and he mixed in the Soundboard. This is the first time a high-res mp3 of his mix has been made available. "Ashes to Afterbirth" was also the first song Austin and him worked on together when they started Puppy Dogs and Ice Cream.

A plan is coming together...

It's Wednesday night. That means H.U.N.X. + ALANS at Nick and Eddie. Looks like I'm spending Thursday night on the other side of the river. Heading over straight from work to catch an early show at The Canvas featuring Kristoff Krane, Guante, Carnage and See More Perspective. After checking out this new arts based community center it'll be time to head over to The Turf for Dragons Power Up! and 4ontheFloor. This weekend could very well hold in store back nights at The Triple Rock with Dillinger 4 + Paint it Black playing Friday and The Drug Budget on Saturday. Five shows in four nights is definitely doable.

The previous evening I had ran into my friend James from Delta Lyrae and was telling him how excited I was for Thursday night. I mean, it's not every night you get to see 3 bands that you really enjoy play the same bill at a new venue you've heard nothing but good things about. I did mention that I was not familiar with White Mischief and that I was a fan of the 3 band per bill format. He replied, "Yeah but sometimes it's the bands you know nothing about that really blow you away." Well, James was right. So right that going forward I don't think I'll be such a snob about 4 band bills or bands that I'm not familiar with. There's something special about White Mischief BUT outside of this show there is virtually no net presence for this band. Something tells me that's about to change in the coming months. In fact, if you're interested in playing a show with White Mischief or adding them to one you can contact Meleck here. Thank you to Hell's Kitchen and all of the bands for allowing me to record these sets. Extra thanks to Meleck for the permission to share this recording.

How is it that Falcon Arrow wasn't on the Best New Bands bill the other night? They would sound epic in the Mainroom. I said Epic! Well, going strong since 2008 likely disqualifies you. This was my first time attending a show at Hell's Kitchen and everyone that's been telling me about it were right, it sounds really nice down there. The staff were all very friendly as well.

I'm so glad Hell's Kitchen is getting serious with their new and improved HK Late Night series. New shows are filling up their calendar on the heels of their first two successful weekends. Late Night downtown happy hour just got a whole lot better Thursday through Sunday. See.

Playing Songs On KFAI's MN Soundtrack Tonight

My friend Jackie and I will be hosting MN Soundtrack tonight as Mr. Kennedy is out on an important marathon music assignment. I was told that playing 90 minutes of Fat Kid Wednesdays might not be the best idea but we will be playing a mix of live tracks and studio tracks from several local bands. MN Soundtrack airs on KFAI (90.3 Minneapolis 106.7 St. Paul) every Friday night from 7:30 to 9:00pm. You can certainly stream it online if you so choose to.

Hell's Kitchen: New Booker and Show Schedule

Hell's Kitchen has brought in Mike Siddall to head up the booking of their Late Night shows series Thursday, Friday and Saturday. These shows include a 3 to 4 band format starting at 10:30 with a $5 cover. From 10PM to close Hell's Kitchen features a number of drink specials as well as economical eats from the Late-Nite Menu. I must say, Mike has wasted no time in booking quality bands. For any interested bands here is his contact info:

Mike Siddall | HK Underground Bookings

HK Underground...Late Night Music at Hell's Kitchen
80 S 9th St Minneapolis MN 55402

This week:

01-27 - Falcon Arrow, Delta Lyrae, White Mischief and Citzens of the Empire
01-28 - Unknown Prophets, Saltee and DJ Willy Lose
01-29 - Charlie Parr and Jeff Mitchell

Past shows:

01-20 - Buildings, Hardcore Crayons and The Nina The Pinta
01-22 - The Blind Shake w/ Michael Yonkers, Gospel Gossip and The Blind Shake (acoustic)

Word on the street is the PA doesn't mess around. Here's what some folks had to say about the shows last weekend:

"Wow first time at the Hells Kitchen. Really nice space and sound. They need to get rid of that hideous styrofoam angel from behind the stage asap though. Who would want to perform under that thing."

"I had never been there either. Amazing sound. Seriously, it might be one of the best sounding rooms in the TC. That room seems like a good size too. Not too big and not too small. The bathroom was also noteworthy."

"First time playing there. I must agree that it sounds great there. Very nice staff that treated us well. Bands & fans - check this place out."

"Hell's Kitchen was a nice surprise. I haven't seen a show that sounded that good in a long time. Whoever set the place up and whoever is is doing sound is doing it right. Everyone seemed comfortable playing, too, which makes me think the sound on stage must have been pretty good, too..."

Phantom Tails - "The Oven of Romance" (Live)

Bandcamp | Facebook | Myspace

Phantom Tails are one of my favorite bands to come out of Minneapolis last year. Having become gangbusters around town you definitely won't have a problem finding something on their schedule that conveniently works for yours as well so I hope more people check them out. I will look into possibly releasing the full recording. Sounds of the Hunchback Whale is available on the Phantom Tails Bandcamp page.

This was the Sleeping in the Aviary and Buffalo Moon Tour Kickoff show which also featured a set from Nice Purse. Thanks as always to the bands and The Triple Rock.

Marijuana Deathsquads - Love Power After Bar Set (01-14-11)

Facebook | Myspace

The first official dust up at Lover Power featured a 6 hour two floor freak out. Olson and Ackerman promised a party, they delivered a marathon blowout. Special thanks to Garrison for setting this up. Folks were helping pick up at the end of the night so I hope all is well and look forward to future events inside this building. Plans for a mix tape are in the far off future but in the meantime I wanted to post the MDS After Bar set. Sorry it took so long but somehow a noon trip to the gym sounded like the ticket? Enjoy and see you at a bloody mary bar somewhere south of Franklin in about 30.

Time to get back at it...

The calendar has been updated. I certainly can't make it to everything listed without going broke and losing my job due to sleep deprivation but 2011 is alright by me so far. It might even be time to upgrade gear again. Looking at a possible 6 night run with Kermit's Corner in there to just relax and chill. Tonight it's going down over in the Seven Corners neighborhood.

Remembering MC/VL

Unfortunately I was unable to attend what was both the final MC/VL show as well as the last night of the 501 Club remaining in business. Recording from the floor was sure to be pandemonium so I had intended on talking with Knoll about the ill soundboard tape. Here's hoping someone pulled through with the 1s and 0s. What I can offer is a quality recording of the Old Bar show from last summer which is still available here:

This Decade That Decade May I Have Another Please?

Well friends, this road hasn't ended yet and there's happiness filling up this Empty ole heart regarding that. I'm not feeling a show and I'm not feeling a bar. I do have a $20 haircut and some good friends to close the decade with though and nothing beats that. Nothing. 30 ain't so bad. Here's hoping the queen of Beverly has a good Eve. Let's not forget the friends and family who are no longer with us. As fucking trite as it is to type that this time of year I know one thing for sure. I wish I had one more with Mike.

If I were heading out into the freezing rain you'd likely find me at The Turf Club's Annual Covernanza. It was a blast to record NYE 2009. Another stellar line up again this year; Vampire Hands as The Beatles, Leisure Birds as Creedence Clearwater Revival, Chambermaids as The Pixies and Daughters of the Sun as Sleep.

However, you've also got MPLS.TV ringing in the new year at The Entry with CLAPS, Slapping Purses, Fort Wilson Riot and Chelsea Boys. Always plenty of decisions to be made around here. Communist Daughter at Cause for the Uptown get down and of course it's always a good time for The Triple Rock. I can taste the bloodys already.

Rent Party @ The Turf Tonight!

"We are members of many Twin Cities bands, some of which you have heard before, others maybe not so much. Although we play somewhat disparate types of music, we all happen to share a single rehearsal space in Minneapolis. We're civilized like that.

As the air grows colder, our thoughts turn to the big-ass shared heating bills that await us in the months ahead. To help survive this costly seasonal menace, we dearly hope you'll join... us for our first (annual?) "RENT PARTY!" concert experience. In addition to familiar configurations, we will rotate through some more abnormal collaborations, covers and musical detours. Proceeds will go directly to keeping the lights and heat running in our shared sanctuary so that we may continue to make music and not traumatize our neighbors/spouses/children."

Set times will run something like this...

09:00 Quiet Client
09:25 Emot
09:50 Minor Kingdom
10:15 All Tomorrow's Petty
10:30 Love-cars
10:55 Haley Bonar

Sorry OK December Miniseries @ The Nomad

December's miniseries at The Nomad will feature Sorry OK along with a ton of other great local bands. The proof is really in the flier. I would like to record all three of these but realistically I'm aiming for at least two. The TBA on 12/16 will be Brian Whitson & the Night Wolves.

On a semi-unrelated note this makes me nostalgic for the December 2007 Miniseries. Fond memories of trudging through the West Bank snow to record four Mel Gibson and the Pants shows that also included a group of insane supporting bands.

Graham O'Brien Releases Debut Album

Graham O'Brien - Live Drums promo video from NOECHO Records on Vimeo.

Graham O'Brien's debut solo album Live Drums is now available for purchase or download through NOECHO Records. It is also available via iTunes. You may be familiar with Graham's work in No Bird Sing, Abzorbr or any number of other bands he's played in or done production for but Live Drums is some next level business. The album features appearances by Kristoff Krane, Adam Svec, Alicia Wiley as well as Eric Blair and Robert Mulrennan of No Bird Sing.

Graham's debut solo effort, Live Drums lies somewhere near the boundaries of the Instrumental Hip Hop genre. As the title suggests, each song on the album is shaped by Graham’s drum set performances - which are inventive and creatively recorded. The dark, contrasting layers of synthetic and sampled sounds make the record an engaging listen. Compositionally, this album is influenced by DJ Shadow, Portishead and The Gaslamp Killer, among others.

Opening Party For EYE Will (A Micheal "Eyedea" Larsen Benefit Art Show)

Thank you to everyone who came out to Nicademus Art and Framing and The Turf Club this past Saturday.

For those not familiar with EYE Will it is a celebration of the visual art of a young Micheal "Eyedea" Larsen and the artists he worked with later in his life. The first show this past Saturday displayed sketches and paintings done by Larsen from grade school through high school alongside collaborations, album covers, and original work from Louis LaPierre, Michael Gaughan, James Penfield and others. Larsen's visual art shows ageless poise and wisdom, traits warmly familiar to those deeply affected by his poetry and music.

Contributing Visual Artists Included: Michael Gaughan, James Penfield, Booka B, Louis N LaPierre, Jeremy Ylvisaker, Satori, and George Tompson

EYE Will opened at Nicademus Art and Framing - 225 Snelling Avenue in Saint Paul, MN on November 27th with a reception from 6-9pm. The show is FREE and open to the general public through December 10th.

Immediately following the opening night reception, the nearby Turf Club hosted "Opening Party for EYE Will" featuring live sets from Face Candy, Kill the Vultures, Kristoff Krane, No Bird Sing, Carnage, Guitar Party, Sector 7G, Mr. Dufaux.

Both EYE Will and the Opening Party are Benefit Events. All art and ticket sales go to the Micheal “Eyedea” Larsen & Family Fund. Please visit micheallarsen.com for updates on future EYE Will events.

Good Article On Taping From The BBC.

Gig-tapers take their microphones on a mission

By Nicola Stanbridge
Today programme

Excerpt...

"Next time you are at a gig, do not be surprised to find yourself standing by someone with a microphone recording the show - sound blasting from the stage, crowd noise and all.

If they have got permission from the venue and the artist, they are likely to be one of a growing online community of "tapers" recording the concert and posting the audio online.

Distinct from bootleggers, they are bound by a code of conduct that forbids them profiting from their recordings. Their hobby is all about recording shows for posterity.

Permission is required and not all bands are taper-friendly. But as the music industry tries to adapt to the many opportunities to download something for nothing, this taper community is being embraced by more and more musicians.

In the 1960s the Grateful Dead encouraged audiences to tape shows. Their followers, known as Dead Heads, documented almost all the band's performances, and the underground taping community stuck at it in to the digital age.

The band Low Anthem upholds the tradition, with a message posted on their website. "If you are a 'taper', you will find safe harbor at Low Anthem shows, so long as the venue is not cruel and unusual," it says.

All of the recordings that I make, I feel that I am recording something of historical benefit
Alex, taper

Backstage at the End of the Road festival in Dorset, Ben Knox-Miller from Low Anthem said that the band actually encouraged tapers to set up microphones at their gigs.

"They are these guys who are obsessed with music and have been obsessed for years," he said.

"You get a lot of people who follow the Dead around, who just have these huge catalogues of shows they've been to. They love music so much, it's just good to be around them.

"I've never taped a show myself. My friend Dan Lefkowitz used to play in the band. He left us three years ago and I wish I had that memory. I wish that somebody had captured that."

On a neighbouring stage Mark Hamilton, a former taper turned singer-guitarist in the band Woodpigeon, divulged the secrets of his hobby.

"I joined a tape trading mailing list and we traded tapes through the mail with all these people who were around the world.
Ben Knox-Miller
Ben Knox-Miller, of The Low Anthem, embraces his taper fans

"That was 18 years ago now - we were trading lots of grunge."

Hamilton was mainly involved in the mailing list of tapers who recorded the band The Smashing Pumpkins. The people who set up the mailing list, he said, ended up working for the band.

"If you talk about it in a philosophical way, you are dealing with the people that are most interested in what you are doing," he said.

But not all bands are so friendly. One taper's equipment was destroyed by a security guard at a Bob Dylan concert in the 1970s.

A few well-known names in the music industry are avowedly anti-taping, but such an attitude might not be in their favour, according to music industry consultant Keith Jopling.

Smashing Pumpkins on stage
The Smashing Pumpkins hired those who started their taper mailing list

"Bands need to look at communities like this and say 'these are super-fans. They are really real enthusiasts, even obsessed about our music - maybe there's a way in which we can collaborate with them'.

"This is essentially a ring-fenced community, so we're talking about hundreds, maybe into the thousands of enthusiasts.

"Not multi-millions of people who are cynically file-sharing tracks just because they are free."

He said some bands were making the most of their super-fans.

In one example, the band Radiohead used mobile phone video footage of a concert in Prague, edited it together with a recording of the music, and made it available for download.

Indeed, the record industry does not appear to be acting punitively against the majority of tapers.

"If you look at these sites, you can see some of them are very respectful to artists' needs," Jopling said.
The Astoria
Moments on stage at the Astoria have been saved by the tapers

"They have a list of artists who have set down what their policy is - the kind of concerts that you can tape, those that you can't and there are some bands that obviously say no taping at all."

Forty-year-old Alex, who goes under the online name Humbug, has been taping for eight years without any problems from record companies.

He uploads his recordings to sites such as bt.etree and The Archive.

"All of the recordings that I make, I feel that I am recording something of historical benefit," he said.

"They're unique events. The atmosphere in some of these little clubs in central London is absolutely amazing.

"It is a real shame that some of them have closed recently - The Astoria, the Mean Fiddler, the Metro and also that one of the most historic, the 100 Club, is now under threat.

"It'd be a real shame to see it go."

You can hear Nicola Stanbridge's report on tapers on Radio 4's Today programme on Monday morning, between 6 and 9am."

I haven't been near a computer since Friday afternoon and it's been lovely.

Missed dredg and Codeseven at the Cabooze last Wednesday. Just wasn't in the mood to head down there. dredg will be releasing a new album at the end of March though. Perish03 featuring CLAPS, Aaron and the Sea, DJ TRL, Compound and DJ Ghoul Talk was well worth the trip to Dinkytown.

Back in September I was invited to record the last ever Military Special show that went down at The Entry on Friday night. This was an assignment that I gladly accepted. From start to finish it was a great night of live music including sets from Lucy Michelle & The Velvet Lapelles, Phantom Tails, Estate and Dada Trash Collage. In other news, P.J., being the good fellow he is was able to record Nomia, Canyons of Static, and Lynxxe at The Whole. Look for those sets in the future.

Then we had another Saturday night with 5 or 6 shows to choose from. I narrowed it down to City on the Make at The Dakota, the Every Wall Will Fall event at The Turf Club and Os Mutantes were also playing The Cedar. To be completely honest the City on the Make show had been bumped to the top when I heard about it one loud evening at Palmer's a month prior. Then the freezing rain and a general sense of laziness set in. Please tell me you recorded City on the Make's third ever Dakota Late Night installment? Please?

DJ TRL, Compound and DJ Ghoul Talk playing music throughout the evening.

Perish is an evening of "Dark Music" taking place every third Thursday of the month at The Kitty Cat Klub.

Thursday 11/18...

Tonight sounds like a good night to see a couple of different shows. Maybe Sorry OK, The Chickadee Mountain Martyrs and Ogre Smash Death Boom at Dusty Pixels (Free, All Ages, 8pm, 2443 Hennepin Ave S) followed by Perish03 at The Kitty Cat Klub? I'm sure a trip to Mesa Pizza will be involved.

Update?

Friday November 5th: Unfortunately I did not stay for Two Cow Garage and Franz Nicolay but did record The Evening Rig and Holyoke at The Triple Rock.

Saturday November 6th: I recorded the first ever in-store performance at Yeti Records featuring Shahs. I need to get the set list from Tom so I can post the tape.

Tuesday November 9th: I attended the Larsen Family Benefit at First Avenue but chose not to record. Andrea Swensson did a really nice write up for Gimme Noise.

Thursday November 11th: I recorded Dawes, Peter Wolf Crier and The Moondoggies at First Avenue. A great time was had and I plan to get those sets posted in the near future.

Friday November 12th: Even though The Soviettes at The Triple Rock has been on my calendar for a while I decided to stay in Friday night.

Saturday November 13th: Was able to make it to The Ritz for the second night of the Gastro Non Grata benefit. Being that it was so cold and snowy I left the mics at home. The highlight will hopefully be a sbd recording of Black Audience. Unfortunately I was not able to catch Marijuana Deathsqauds or Pink Mink. Thanks to The Anchor for always being my late night NE stop.

"Gastro Non Grata has been busy sowing the seeds of knowledge bombs of the best local chefs, purveyors of the finest libation and lots of dirty rock and roll into your skulls for over four years. This fall we reaped such bumper crop of good times we have to make it a two day soiree with all proceeds to benefit our friends at the beautiful Ritz Theater in NE MPLS. That’s right, two days of the finest this city has to offer in chef driven food, locally owned alcoholic beverages and uber-talented musicians.

The November 12 show features chef Philip Becht (Modern Café) and Erik Anderson (Seachange) pairing foods with Crispin Cider while DJ Pat Dwyer (Grumpy’s NE) spins the hits and makes your fingers snap. Bands in order of appearance Magic Castles, Unknown Prophets, Tyler Burkum and Me and My Arrow.

November 13 brings the flavor with Phil Becht again, flanked by and Steven Brown (chef/owner of soon to be Tilia) on vittle patrol with our friends from Fulton Beer and Grape Beginnings. Cakeeater Bakery will also have something for your sweet tooth on hand. In between sets DJ Solid Gold plays the music that keeps hope alive. Music by Black Audience, Phantom Tails, Rude Girl, Marijuana Death Squads and Pink Mink.

We’re also proud to announce we’re bringing the meat raffle back for both nights with our friends from Clancey’s Meat and Fish and a bevy of local NE establishments throwing their wares into the prize vaults, so bring extra cash for raffle tickets.

Gastro Non Grata is a labor of love co-sponsored by Pabst Blue Ribbon, Modern Café, Cakeeater Bakery, Fulton Beer, Crispin Cider, Grape Beginnings, Metro Magazine and Heavy Table.
